IN STEEL WE TRUST

Hey I had some pictures from the last time we worked on the land barge.

poo poo, what did I break here?

Oh right, we were replacing the rubber brake lines and this one was so rusted and seized the rust had welded the fitting to the line, and it just kind of twisted apart.

We eventually got it to Airdrie to get the passenger side glass put in. loving snow.

They did a good job, and cheap too. Thanks Airdrie windshield and glass.

Check out the windshield corner rust. Mmmm.

After that, I drove it to the same detailer that did the celica and left it with him while I went on vacation. The poor bastard put loving five rounds of shampoo into that upholstery which is a personal record for him. Hopefully Switch and I can get some decent shots of that soon.

So is it just us and Shrugs' team going on this trip? Did all you northern guys bail on us? :smith:

The origin of this car is a story for another post though.

Right, so here's where this stupid car came from. I was stalling to give myself time to find all the old pictures, but they're mostly gone. :smith:
2005, my buddy gets a 1984 2.3 5spd Mustang for his 16th birthday. Decent shape, non-running oh and hey it's unregisterable (I can't remember why, but he got ripped off basically). Well this sucks.
Ehh whatever, life goes on. He gets a job at PNP. He found another car just before we graduated, by chance an 84 as well but this one's a 3.8/auto, $400. The first car had some parts stripped off, and went off to his cousin's ranch to serve as a scratching post for cattle.
So pretty normal first car stuff. I got my Buick, we put CBs in them, flipped the lids on our air cleaners cause it sounds cool and did burnouts everywhere. The car got junkyard 3.73s and a posi that we rebuilt, and rather than follow the OE spec for clutch preload we put all the shims that would fit. the springs were fully compressed and the last clutch went in with a BFH. It's still tighter than a new OE unit to this day and we haven't touched it.
He does an apprenticeship in Manitoba and it makes the commute every year until it throws a rod in Saskatchewan. His dad loaded a lovely CVH Escort onto a U-haul car dolly, delivered it to him, dragged the Mustang back home. Two months later he's back and buys a rotten Thunderbird with a good 3.8, and bet his dad (an ex-Ford master tech) a bottle he couldn't pull the motor in less than an hour.
We saw some poo poo that night. 40 minutes, no cut wires or hoses, all the old rotten Ford connectors and 20 year old hoses fully intact. Flat rate is a hell of a drug.

So let's go racing. College is over (for one of us, lol I just finished that poo poo this year), disposable income a-plenty, 2008's shitshow made bringing Murrican engine parts in cheap. A nice toasty flat tappet 351W got built. Had a real good season, ran low 14s and later high 13s on 255 section Radial T/As at 3500 feet. Membership in the club was optional in our class, but if a non-member came in first for the season they didn't get the full prize or the big fuckoff trophy. We figured the membership fee wasn't worth gambling with, so of course we came in first.

Second season, rod let go. Let's go faster. So the second 351 got built. Roller block, 'wtf is an idle' cam, 215cc AFR heads, 6AL-2, slicks, all the whizzy poo poo. Even got a brand new carb, no more junkyard Holleys (until we realized just how poo poo Edelbrock carbs are, and went back to a Holley :v:)

Result: Broke 100MPH in the 1/4 and ran 13.6 bouncing off redline for the last ~400 feet. So we grabbed an AOD and a 4R70W, made a hybrid of the two and did a bunch of homebrew valvebody mods (each shift felt like being rearended by a freight train), and after ironing out a few more bugs got down into the high 12s. Lifted the LF wheel every launch, would lift both with the front sway bar in but it was faster without.
And then they closed our race track. We built a trailer and hauled it to Edmonton for a couple more seasons, but it just wasn't worth the time, fuel and effort to do any serious racing anymore, the car was starting to twist up real bad from those launches, rust was getting to the point where tech guys were starting to make a bunch of noise and his son was born that winter so he had a lot of other stuff to worry about. The car just kinda sat there rusting for a few years.

The transmission was pulled a year ago and went into a motorhome, the engine and all (well most of) the go-fast bits got pulled a week before Switch got the 2TM2TW ball rolling, in preparation to crush the thing. So yeah, it's been saved from the crusher twice now.

That mustang is loving awesome.

Now for the not so awesome. I'm going to be running the 734 portion of the FTR this whole week! For work! And I won't be back in town until, well I actually have no idea.

Combined with me having to drop $3k on fixing the meter deep voids under my driveway so my garage doesn't sink and detach from house and well, I think you can see where this is going.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to drop out of the rally this year.

I'm sorry.

I will do my best to get pictures of the northern portion of the FTR. Consider me your pre-runner.

McTinkerson: :(

K so holy poo poo I am never 5spd swapping an automatic Fox body again. Pain in the rear end. But is does drive a fuckton better than with the A4LD that came with the 2.3 and the manual ECU is a lot less fussy so a bunch more of our little gremlins went away.
Newerish PNP MotoMaster AWs* on the front, Grabbers in the rear, ground clearance acquired.

The shift knob is 1/2"-20, same as my truck. So it got the first knob I made for it (like 2 weeks before Marty did it :colbert:), with a yeah-we-did-that shift boot:

We'll have to forego installing the nice seats, fog lights and a bunch of other stuff we'd planned and/or bought for it but I'm still thrilled with the result. Car drives impeccably well and I can't wait to go do more adventures in it.

*Non-Canadians: Motomaster tires are pretty much bottom of the barrel Chinese garbage marketed with a heapin' helpin' of nationalistic bullshit. The AW is the cheapest tire on this line, and was designed in the mid-'90s. In this size I could have bought a pair brand new for $32 apiece, but the ones I found at PNP had newer DOTs than the ones the Cambodian Tyrant wanted to sell me and were half the price.

Day 2, entry one.
Having nearly frozen our giblets off last night (at least switch and I did, I think shrugs and his codriver were ok), we woke to hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs and campfire coffee.

Broke camp and did a little fishing off the dock, caught and released a trio of nice little brook trout.

We are currently in Rocky mountain House enjoying a burg from the baron. :getin:

I'm going to get this empty propane tank refilled and then I think we're headed to wetaskiwin for the Reynolds museum.

Part 2: Reynolds didn't happen today, unforeseen circumstances brought us to rimby and the international harvester museum. It was closed but still interesting, lots of outdoor exhibits.

We are camped out at gull lake tonight serenaded by the dozen champion generator sets screaming in the neighbouring sites so they can watch the hockey game.

Tonight's dinner, steaks, grilled corn and stir fry vegetables.

Day 3 entry one.

Much better night last, we slept comfortably after an enormous steak dinner, found a guy selling a huge stack of firewood for 30 bucks in rimby, and spent the night at Aspen beach campground on the shores of gull lake.

I made my signature pancakes for breakfast, and after a small food coma we broke camp and went our separate ways. SSSwitch and I are going to the Reynolds museum for a bit, while team shrugs is headed home. Spirits are high now towards the end of the journey. Hopefully we can get some good pictures here.

We did in fact survive. I came in today, quit my job, and now I'm posting pictures of our trip.

The Town Car is the perfect car for camping. Look at how much room we had in the trunk:

Slung and I left from Airdrie after getting groceries here. This car is not easy to drive in tight parking lots.

Eventually we arrived in Nordegg and met up with the Dustang.

After a blast up the FTR where we dodged deer and sheep, we arrived at the Pepper Lake campgrounds. Here's a picture of our fender lip.

And the Dustang.

After an incredibly cold night, we prepared the next morning to break camp. The Dustang needed to be cleaned.

We ingested relatively less beer ourselves, though I'm pretty sure at least some of our empties were in the previous shot.

At last, Pepper Lake. Warm, and the trout were biting.

Shrugs and Co mentioned that they saw a gravel pit on the way in, and demanded to do sick donuts. I complied as best the Town Car could, but it didn't like doing it. The Dustang, on the other hand, was born for this.

We left the FTR for civilization. At Rocky, we stopped for Burger Baron.

We drove to Gull Lake. Both Slung and I were near passing out while driving so we decided to camp early.

Proof that we ate some vegetables during the trip:

The next morning, the Dustang and the Town Car went their separate ways. We ended up at the Reynolds Museum.

For whatever reason, the Town Car only got dusty on the wheels and tires (as well as everything in the trunk). This dust is still there, too.

So we went to the Reynolds Museum. It's pretty awesome.

This traction engine has wicked sick wheels:

This (registered, driven) Country Squire has a little secret:

We also got to get driven around by the coolest curator I've ever hung out with and her four-door Bel-Air Tradesman with a three on the tree.

All good things must come to an end, and so we went home, stopping in Red Deer:

I am still sort of amazed how many cars we were able to pass on Highway 2. This thing is a dog performance-wise and will just not let you get much above 120 indicated before it starts to get the bowel shakes.

Finally, we arrived at the Ranch:

Here is the final condition of our fender lip after getting clobbered in every parking lot in the province:

I really loved this trip, and I think the car was phenomenal for what we put into it. Now begins the tough task of trying to find someone who will take the car off my hands and elevate it to the level of greatness that it deserves.

Slung Blade

IN STEEL WE TRUST

Finally had a chance to offload my pictures.

So Thursday I worked about 14 hours, in addition to two callouts in the middle of the loving nights before and after. I left a message for my colleagues to demonstrate my mental state.

Friday rolls around and SSSwitch comes to my place and we load the barge. Heading to Airdrie for essential ice, beer, and various sundries.

EFFICIENCY, SPEED, AND CLASS.

After an entirely uneventful trip to Nordegg, we leave the pavement.

Road conditions were excellent, there was only one or two sections of serious washboarding.

Our destination was just as pretty as I had remembered it.

The night was indeed cold, as SSSwitch indicated. Even I, an extremely well insulated gentleman (:btroll:) was uncomfortable in a -10C rated sleeping bag. My 10 pound propane bottle was completely empty, so we used good old fashioned wood to cook a healthy breakfast.

With the sun out, we did a little fishing off the dock. Between the two of us with licenses, we caught three nice little brook trout with a simple spoon lure, all released back into the water for future anglers.

Then it was on to the gravel pit by the entrance to the park.

The Dustang was truly in its' element here.

The lincoln, not so much, but it made a valiant effort and raised a mighty dust cloud regardless.

If you squint, you can see SSSwitch wearing the sea captain's hat that I purchased for him as a souvenir.

After the festivities we retired from the Alberta Forestry Zone to the warm embrace of civilization, where we purchased propane and other supplies, and decided against returning to the hellishly cold mountain landscape of the west and turned East, to the warm fertile plains and brush of central Alberta. Gull Lake, Aspen Beach. A place to rest, recuperate and drink our troubles away while hordes of joyously screaming children enjoyed happy days with new friends that they would probably never meet again :unsmith: Plus we had pancakes for breakfast, that's always nice.

The locals mistook our shelter for some kind of leaf.

There is so much room in this car I didn't even have to try to organize things very well. There is a stove, BBQ, cooler, bag of charcoal, tools, cast iron pan, two folding chairs, a charcoal chimney, a propane tank and many misc items in the trunk.

And all our sleeping gear, clothing and tent in the back seat.

It is now where the teams separate, and SSSwitch and I head north to Wetaskiwin to enjoy a museum of industry and technology. This appears to be some kind of precursor subaru.

Evidence of the initial reluctance to make automobiles by the McLaughlin company.

Followed by their eventual embrace of the new order just a few years later.

Some of the interpretive plaques were a little close to home.

Sounds vaguely familiar.

I couldn't get adequate pictures of everything, as we could have been there for days. But I did grab a snap of this for my grandparents.

They're both from Moosomin, and this thing is freaky as hell.

On the way up we were following a boat trailer that threw a wheel bearing at us when the left hub exploded. The bumper got nailed by a chunk of bearing race which chipped the chrome, and then the windshield took a ball bearing directly in my line of sight.

It's a tough little bastard of a car, the trans is a little lackadaisical but I'm sure if someone actually took it off my hands they could adjust the valve body preloads (or whatever, automatic transmissions are voodoo) to make it shift more like a Mustang or a Vic.

We've listed it as-is with the mud terrains, but if it doesn't sell like that (it probably won't) I will probably put the old lovely stock wheels/tires back on it and list it for much less as a teenager's first car or something.

I will be daily driving it next week. If the A/C worked I'd probably keep it...

Ford says 5000 lb. I can throw a U-Haul hitch (Class 2 and Class 4 available; 3500 lb recommended, 6000 lb "distributed") on this thing with a few weeks' notice and a few hours on Slung's lift.

Probably could do with a trans cooler, fluid change and fresh tires in the stock size if you wanted it to be absolutely rock solid.
