If they had the old playoff system (with division winners getting the top seeds) it would have had Bruins vs. Habs and Jackets vs. Rangers which would have been a lot of fun.

I dunno the West series kind of seem dumb this year, except for Chicago vs. Nashville.

That 2010 Capitals team had huge question marks on defense and in goal. Honestly I'd be more surprised at them losing this year because their best of all time playoff goaltender would have to be average and Andersen will have to get red hot because I can't really see the Leafs winning the possession battle, especially now that Zaitsev is out for at least one game.

I like to say "lol Tanner Glass" as much as the next guy, but that really was a disgusting backhand shot and goes to show you that professional hockey players, no matter how bad they are compared to other professional hockey players, are still insanely good at hockey.

What a poo poo sandwich of a first 30 minutes. The rest of the game was cool.

Also Brooks Orpik is at least partially responsible for both goals against and Nate Schmidt will continue to eat nachos in the press box for Game 2. Also John Carlson blows and Shattenkirk and Orlov own bones.

I'm explicitly NOT saying that.

Why doesn't the NHL stagger start times for the games? There's no reason for two 7 pm starts tonight.

Also is there any word on Murray's injury? I know he's not playing tonight but any idea how long he's going to be out?

Zach Sanford is playing for Jori Lehtera tonight :)

How's Sanford been for the Blues? He was kind of lost for the first half of the season with Washington which was to be expected, but got a little more comfortable towards the end. I was sad to see him traded but Shattenkirk has been worth it so far. Maybe this will be one of those rare win-win trades.

Barry Trotz is threatening to tweak the lineup tonight which usually means Backstrom and Kuznetsov switch places. I would hope that wouldn't prove necessary, but we'll see. I also suspect that Holtby will be on a short leash tonight, if only to light a fire in the rest of the team as opposed to him deserving of being pulled.

I would hope it would mean Nate Schmidt would be in the lineup but lol at the thought of Trotz replacing Brooks Orpik or Karl "iron man" Alzner with anyone no matter how much better they are.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Backstrom and Kuznetsov flipped. Kuznetsov and Ovechkin seem to benefit from playing with each other.

Schmidt in for one of those two would be the only change I'd want, but it won't happen.

It's frustrating because Shattenkirk has been an upgrade on the blueline but since Trotz is keeping Schmidt out of the lineup the overall impact of the trade hasn't been as great as it could have been. It's effectively been Shattenkirk upgrading Schmidt rather than Shattenkirk upgrading Orpik or Alzner.

Also for fucks sake do not play the 4th line more than the 3rd line again. It's nice that Tom Wilson scored a goal but the 4th line has been dogshit while the third line has been pretty good. I'm so sick of Trotz preferring his grinders.

I dunno I feel like Mike Sullivan helped get rid of the old veteran garbage on his team and hasn't been afraid to play young players like Guentzel, Sheary, and Rust in the lineup. Even calling Sestito up has been for very specific (though lovely) purposes and hasn't lasted very long.

Mind_Taker
May 7, 2007

They also need to re-sign Orlov and Schmidt (who will probably be left unprotected unless they are really bold and leave Carlson exposed).

I'd highly consider signing Orlov long term given his abilities and likelihood of improving even more and I'd actually consider trading Carlson given his past two seasons worth of work but a lot of his situation depends on the rest of the postseason.

I think they'll still be competitive next year but they'll be a little shallower and Ovechkin will continue to decline a little more. They don't really have many stud forward prospects to step in and provide an immediate impact either so I think it's fair to say this is their best shot.

I know CAS doesn't like him, but I wouldn't have minded Alzner back so we could dress 7D.

I'm fine with Alzner replacing Orpik and no one else, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of going with 7D since they've literally never done that under Trotz and could lead to confusion and some pretty dumb pairings instead of the ones that have worked.

Makes you wonder what that closed-door meeting called by Capitals players was really about after their blowout defeat in Game 2, huh?

Not really.

If they say it wasn't about eliminating Crosby, the Capitals are liars. And if that sounds like an unfair accusation to make of the Capitals, then please consider my decade of experience covering a sport I love and a league I really, really, really want to give the benefit of the doubt.

Because at worst it was a 5 and a game which he already got. Anything more is completely taking intent out of the picture and just punishing him because it was Sidney Crosby. It was an awkward play with an unfortunate outcome, not an intent to injure.

Pittsburgh media is doubling-down on their hot takes:

http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/12252418-74/gorman-crosby-hit-a-low-blow-by-caps

quote:

Was it premeditated?

Only the Capitals can answer that.

“Absolutely not. It wasn't intentional,” said Niskanen, a former Penguins defenseman who once fought Crosby while playing for the Dallas Stars.

“I've seen the replay. In super slow-mo, it looks really bad. He's coming across trying to score. As he's doing that, he's getting lower and lower. When it's happening that fast ... my stick and his head collided. I wasn't extending, trying to hit him in the head. It happened quickly.

“I wasn't even trying to cross-check him with a serious amount of force. A collision was going to happen there in the crease. When the play first starts, I think my stick had about his arm level probably right about where the numbers are on the side of his jersey. Because he's trying to make a play, he's getting lower and lower. He's getting pressured.”

Maybe you'd be more willing to buy that explanation if it wasn't from the Capitals, the same organization against which Crosby suffered a concussion on a blindside hit by David Steckel in the 2011 Winter Classic, an injury that caused him to miss 63 games over two seasons.

Bringing up the Steckel hit in the year 2017 lmao. Who the gently caress still thinks Steckel's hit was intentional?

Pittsburgh sports media is the worst.
