The Capitals are very good. They've got a lot of the right storylines going... the smart move at the deadline to get Shattenkirk, the young guns coming into their own, Justin Williams doing his whole veteran thing, a goaltender who can steal games. A pretty great penalty kill.

I am predicting at least one game lost principally to a dumb thing Brooks Orpik does. I can also see Tom Wilson murdering a guy, but that could be strategically useful.

During the height of the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry, I remember a game where Penguins fans lined up on the steps of the Portrait Gallery across from the Verizon Center and were lobbing beer bottles into the crowd.

Mostly it's just fans from New York parachuting in and telling people they are bad at being fans for not cheering enough or at the right times or something stupid. I've seen this in Jersey, D.C. and Florida at hockey, football and baseball games.

Also for fucks sake do not play the 4th line more than the 3rd line again. It's nice that Tom Wilson scored a goal but the 4th line has been dogshit while the third line has been pretty good. I'm so sick of Trotz preferring his grinders.

I love Bura, but I'm less sure about Eller and Connolly. Eller can't win a faceoff for his life.

I actually like the idea of switching Backstrom and Kuzy. Kuzy has looked dynamic but he hasn't been able to finish. Playing with Ovi might give him more space.

e: Carlson turning into absolute poo poo is interesting to see though

Honestly a lot of it was that, like Slappy Pappy said, Toronto was hemming the Caps into their own zone with an aggressive forecheck. I love Ovi, but he is not a great transition player and hasn't been for a long time. Caps fans always get on their feet at Verizon Center when he rumbles through the neutral zone, but he can't do poo poo with the puck at the blue line and almost always coughs it up.

If they were able to set up more in the offensive zone like they are capable of doing, they could get Ovi more ice time and pick Toronto's lovely defense apart. There's been spots in this series where it looks like a Caps PP when it's 5v5, but they haven't scored often enough to put the games away.

history aside, i really don't want the pens to face the caps in the 2nd round. the key to us beating the jackets was getting a 0.933 from MAF and Bob gifting us an 0.882. maybe we get lucky and MAF stays hot, or even luckier and murray comes back (please god), or even luckierier and Holtby stays at around 0.900, but i wouldn't count on any of these. and given how poorly we contained CBJ's offense, i'm not looking forward to seeing what kuzy, ovie, backstrom, oshie and playoff hero tom wilson can do to a letang-less D corps

Depends, can the Pens execute the Leafs' strategy of a really aggressive forecheck combined with taking away the boards? Is Hagelin coming back for Round 2?

Overall, I agree with your assessment, except... I'm not so sure about the Caps' struggles being ironed out. Pretty amazing that they were all decided by 1-goal games, and all but one were decided in OT. I only got to see the end of most of their games, but it didn't seem like WSH started off the series slow and then hit their stride after a couple games. Seemed more like they were generally playing pretty well but unable to shut down the Leafs as much as everyone expected.

As a Pens fan, I'm still not super optimistic about the series given our injuries, but I feel a lot better about the match up than I did before the TOR series, even with WSH winning in 6.

The Caps did a pretty good job shutting down the Leafs offense. The Leafs were picking off goals on fast breaks, turnovers and shots from the point through traffic. All perfectly fine ways to score goals, but heavily dependent on luck. The Caps had all but certain odds of beating out that luck over 7 games, but they weren't scoring as well as they should have been given how depleted the Leafs' D was, hence all those one-goal games.

The Pens are also limping a bit on D, but obviously their offense is more dangerous. The Caps are going to need more of those 5 goal games if they want to have any hope of winning. Kuznetsov and Burakovsky in particular really need to step up.
