who, me?

Welcome to the nightmare that will haunt me to the end of my days, also known as this Let’s Play of Persona 5! The ultimate in bad ideas begins now. For real, though, this is a fantastic game that takes what I loved about both previous games in the series (particularly Persona 4) and even Catherine and expands on them in great new ways. This is going to be an SSLP with a few video links for certain cutscenes and the like. I’ll probably also put up boss fights just to give a feel for progression through the game. Hopefully I don’t get nabbed by Atlus’ streaming restrictions (if they’re actually being enforced in any capacity).

Yeah, all that poo poo? Ignore it. When I wrote it, I was a younger, more innocent man. This is actually a tale of endurance, and a parable about the hubris of man. This is a story about someone who’s never actually completed an LP going, “Wouldn’t it be fun if I did the hundred hour JRPG with more text than Infinite Jest?” This is not a story about the triumph of the human spirit. It is a ballad of woe and strife. This is the story of a game that simply refuses to end.

Witness me slowly becoming disillusioned with this game in real-time over the course of almost two years. Witness a weird, rushed translation with awkward phrasing galore. Witness a strange, overwritten and underdeveloped plot and characters. Witness me losing my mind and resorting to cheap gimmicks to keep myself entertained. Witness whatever the gently caress this LP has become.

I like this game. I honestly still like it a lot. At times, that’s despite itself.

What is this game?

Persona 5 is an extremely proficient simulator of being a teenager, with all that entails: wasting time, confused rebelliousness, getting annoyed at your friends who can't keep it in their pants, and casual homophobia! Actually, that's unfair: the homophobia in this game is expert and accomplished. It's a JRPG paced like a game of Red Light, Green Light being run by an rear end in a top hat who thinks it's funny to make it last like twenty minutes. Except in this case it takes 120 hours. It's a game with the subtlety of a brick and the narrative cohesion of that same brick being thrown through a window. It's a good game, is what I'm saying.

What are you going for?

To see as much as possible. That means all or most Confidants. If we can’t fit all of them in I’ll find another way to show them off, whatever, but I’ll also be loosely following a guide to help out with it. I say “loosely” because the only one right now advocates maxing some of the party members before dungeon 3 and screw that. If we have to get them to Rank 9 and back off for a bit, that’s fine. The real issue is just stats and when to boost what, which hopefully will become a non-issue with help from this. edit: lol we ditch that guide poo poo like a month in, buckle up kids

I tuned into this LP and it was loving bugnuts, what the hell are you trying to pull here?

Persona 5 is a very long, and in parts very repetitive game. To break up the monotony and make things a bit more entertaining for your sake (but primarily my own), over the course of this LP I indulge in bad Photoshops, worse jokes, and the occasional inexplicable narrative experiment “guest update.” If that’s not enough to scare you off, go right ahead and… enjoy?????

This is a game with a lot of flashbacks and reflections from the main character, which have been denoted through italics. In the extremely rare instance that I have added a line (you know, as a joke) and it isn't immediately obvious that I have done so, I have underlined the relevant text.

:siren:ABSOLUTELY NO loving SPOILERS THIS GAME HAS BEEN OUT FOR A WEEK AND A HALF:siren:

That said, I'm probably going to end up spoiling Persona 3 and 4 in this, so be warned if you haven't played those.

At some point I actually decided to go back and add section dividers to this LP, but I didn't plan ahead so a lot of them are in the middle of updates. Whoops. I dealt with those by just fudging it and moving the relevant header forward or backward an update.

Part 1: ???: In Medias Res

Opening

Music: Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There (Listen to this)
(Opening Movie Version)

There’s a whole nifty animated intro with the characters ice-skating through the streets, but let’s just jump right in here.

Music: Phantom

This title screen is pretty similar to Persona 4’s original opening screen, but with masks replacing glasses.

There’s a bunch more free DLC for this game, but this is the important one. We’ll explain why in time.

Similarities between characters or events to persons living or dead in your world are purely coincidental.

...The contract has been sealed. The world is not as it should be. It’s filled with distortion, and ruin can no longer be avoided. Those who oppose fate and desire change… From time to time, they were referred to as Tricksters. You are the Trickster… Now is the time to rise against the abyss of distortion.

Intro

A helicopter flies towards a cityscape.

Music: Escape

It approaches a casino and the camera pans in.

Inside, there’s a commotion.

A black-clothed figure leaps stealthily through the air, crossing the room via the lights above.

Well, aren’t you pleased with yourself?

Music: Life Will Change (Listen to this)

Stay calm! You can get away now!
We’ll retrieve the briefcase on our end.
...suspects...not...confirmed...hold...your...positions…
Hm…? What was that...?
Don’t worry about us. Just concentrate on getting away!

Our hero jumps across the lights stylishly.

Nice work as always, Joker.
I bet Skull wouldn’t pull it off that smoothly.
This happens because you have no sense for aesthetics.
Nobody asked you, Inari!

Just run! Get out of there!

Everyone remember where we’re meeting up?
No worries. I can guide you all.

The agents transform into masked creatures.

Joker leaps through the air...

...before landing directly on top of the enemy, grabbing its mask, and...

...ripping it clean off.

The enemy’s body bubbles up and explodes into a mass of red and black goo.

It then turns into whatever the hell this monstrosity is.

For future reference, this is the battle menu. It’s pretty rad.

Joker dispatches the creature with the help of the shadowed figure behind him.

Good. You defeated them with ease.
More of them? Be careful!

Joker dodges the attack with a sick backflip and jumps up to a higher floor.

Joker, behind you! Go through that door!

Dude, can he even hear us!?
Don’t worry, I’m picking up everyone’s voices. Just go, Joker!

Tch. We got away from those guys in black, but there’re still loads more of ‘em...

I can’t confirm the intruder’s location.

Joker quickly takes cover behind a nearby box.
Hide in the shadows, and sneak past when you see an opening!

From there, he can leap from object to object to conceal his presence.

Understood. I will continue the search!

Joker is now free to run up the stairs into another cutscene.

Video: Capture

Music: Run Away~Arrest

These guys aren’t playing around.

Something wrong? The exit should be up ahead.

Through there...?
Nnh...! That’s just how it is. After that commotion, the bottom floor’s--
--completely closed off. Hey, can you make it!?
Over there!

Joker hops the railing and runs across it to the other side of the room.

What a showoff.
You’re so reckless, you know that?

Joker lands safely, but...

...not alone.

Enemies, here!? These readings… It can’t be!

An ambush!?
Joker, can you handle this!?
Joker!
Oh no!

CHEESE IT, IT'S THE FUZZ

It looks like we might just make it away after all.

Welp.

Friendly Mr. SWAT introduces Joker to the butt of his rifle.

You have your teammate to thank for this. You were sold out.

Joker is appropriately shocked to hear this news.

Suspect confirmed! Cuff him!

Music: Interrogation Room

Wake him up.

One of the officers splashes him with a bucket of water.

No dozing off. You still don’t get it, do you?

Are you thinking it can be used as video evidence?

So you’re not that dumb.

Please stop kicking me, kind sir.

*cough* Nngh…! *wheeze*

Obstruction of justice, blackmail, defamation, possession of weapons...

To think that all these crimes were led by a punk like this... And you seemed to be enjoying every second of it... Huh?
I was… enjoying it…? Everything’s hazy… I can’t remember...

And here’s the difficulty select screen. The difficulty in Persona 5 primarily just messes with how much damage you take and inflict, and at both extremes, how much money and experience you get. We won’t be messing with it and will keep it on Normal.

You should know your place.

A cop undoes the cuffs.

It’s a confession under your name.

The protagonist just bats it away with his hand.

I see. I need your hand to sign this, but…

And in retaliation, the cop stomps on the protagonist’s leg.

Don’t expect to walk out of here in one piece. We’re going to make you understand… One must take full responsibility for their actions…

I’m beginning to think I shouldn’t trust the police.

And here’s the naming screen. We’ll stop here for today, but feel free to suggest a name. If not I’ll just go with the canon-ish name from the manga which is Akira Kurusu. I’d prefer something more interesting though if I’m going to be staring at this for the rest of my life. There won’t be a lot of votes in this thread but I feel I can leave this at least up to the audience.

You’ve got two eight-character fields to fill here, and no getting cute and trying to stretch one word over two fields, because that’ll just get really annoying to read. For the same reason I’d also prefer it be a name and not a short phrase that’ll fit within sixteen characters. As funny as the twitter post you saw where they named him gently caress THE POLICE was I’m not sure 80 hours of people calling you gently caress THE is really what we want to go for here.

We are named Dennis Hawkins after the worst bank robber on earth.

I highly suggest googling that name.

I'm gonna vote for the canon name because I have no originality and just always name my Persona MCs by their canon names.

But I can see why this game got two LPs in less than two weeks- it's a drat fine game and will probably be in a lot of GOTY lists.

For the record, the "canon name", or at least the most canon name there is right now, being the one used in the Persona 5 manga, is Akira Kurusu.

Actually! Actually. My real name suggestion is Sabrin Spellman, an allusion to the hit 90s show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The reason I choose this name will become swiftly evident in the playthrough.

Would you be able to upload the music tracks? I've been looking for an extended version of the start menu theme for a while now.

I was mainly going to stick to the standout tracks but if you really want I could add that in some time tomorrow.

I was thinking more in the way The Dark Id approaches his SSLPs which is providing the music track for each scene, but I think P5 has a huge OST, so that may not be super necessary. At least the start menu theme for now would be cool! :)

I was gonna vote for the manga name to fit with previous Persona LP naming schemes, but Giorno Giovanna fits Joker like a glove. Hell, he even has his own Stand.

Holy poo poo, I didnt expect this, I assume I'm the guy that expressed the SSLP interest since I mentioned it in the request thread. Thanks for doing this, I cant put off playing this any longer if I was involved in inspiring this.

Let's be Akira Kurusu together.

Shoutout to Prota Gonist cuz I love that joke.

Edit: Whats your general style going to be? Informative, bad jokes, narrative?

I think you may be thinking too hard about it, then! It's a reference to a cartoon. A cartoon involving a joker.

Maaku Hamiru is pretty good, but I'm a sucker for a Meaningful Name(tm), so my vote is for Akira Kurusu.
