Yeah..... Its not the kind of mood whiplash that feels natural either. I finished the first arc yesterday, and just jesus. It's going for a dark vibe in a way that just doesnt fit the series if you ask me, and its pretty drat jarring for the entire first week of the game and slowly relaxes when it stops the plot and focuses a bit on characters, its probably going to shift right back at the start of the next arc and I'm dreading it. I examined any and everything I possibly could, it added several hours to my playtime, I ADORE flavor text.

For some reason I focused a ton on these two, I think its the ponytail.
Dog loving girl is in my top 5 characters right now.

On the topic of what actually happened to us, I've read a few manga that have similar things basically like Akumetsu(its really good, it handles joking and being a political commentary or whatever much better than P5), so It didnt bother me too much, but the game makes 50% of the dialogue about people bringing it up constantly till you get freedom, and it just drove me loving crazy, me a person who adamantly adheres to all dialogue is good dialogue.

Artix, can you make sure to check out the TV in the cafe on 4/21? I missed that day and as far as I can tell it changes every day.

Edit: I have one little bit of Trivia I can share about the game.
Apparently the original plan was for us to live with Sae, and somehow or another that was the one detail I knew about the game before starting so I was immensely disappointed when suddenly I was adopted by an old man instead of her. He grew on me by the end of the next update though, so its good now.

Persona basically has 10 hour story mode and then 10 hour gameplay mode back and forth. Its not really ideal, but at the very least it motivates me past the gameplay when its getting stale. I cant really say 5 follows the same formula yet, but its not too far off.

Oh hey perfect timing.

I've been replaying Persona 4 the past few months(Endgame now) and read the entirety of both LP threads because I'm insane, and Chie's social link made me think of something. Specifically the Rank 9 event, her justice tendencies have her step out and protect someone, and they proceed to threaten her and her family and friends, but she dissolves the situation by willingly putting herself in harm's way saying they can do whatever to her, and then just back off. Its a nice parallel to this game where if the protag tried anything like that he'd get killed. Naoto's social link has a similar little parallel with the phantom thief being a joke rather than super serious business TM.

I'm playing in Japanese and I just melt into a puddle when I listen to deep booming thunder voice Igor. Also Justine is nice, screw the other one though, and hopefully I'm not mixing them up again. I expected a Kingpin joke referring to the Principal. The only issue with playing in Japanese is that the newscaster is not subtitled for some unfathomable reason and she's not speaking the 1% of Japanese I understand. I keep expecting Kawakami teacher to reveal herself to be a martial arts god at some point.

I'd have fallen in love with Sojiro there myself if I wasnt drowning in negativity at that point, the breakfast scene in the morning really warmed me up to him though. I should really get around to trying Dancing All Night so I actually know anything about Kanami. I think part of why I paid so much attention to those 2 random girls in that other Anime Movie is because they just look so detailed compared to the rest of the random NPCs in the scenes.

My first impression of Persona 5 was rejoicing at Ann being so attractive, because as much as everyone in P3 and P4 grew on me, I never really thought any of the girls were super attractive. I too am a fan of the dipshit options, which is kind of sad cuz it means I'm not seeing the other dialogue trees here. Part of the reason Vulgar Boy's reaction was understated is that you really can just walk into 2 different kinds of castles in Japan. Like Europe they still have standing medieval castles in places like Kyoto's Nijou Castle, and uh...... Love Hotel's can get very strange and fancy in terms of architecture, poo poo's weird man.

If my stupid commentary is annoying, I'll tone it down or stop. Its just fun to actually talk about games, and I assume alot of interest to talk about the actual updates will help keep your motivation high.

The tonal shifts are in the game itself, even when not comparing it to 3 and 4. I'd give examples, but I'm pretty sure that would be spoilers, right?

And while its apparently going for a tone of realism, since to a small extent the way people are reacting to you is gonna happen, its pushing it too far back into fiction and not in the good funny way, its specifically trying to piss you off, and as far as I'm concerned that's a terrible way to start a story, don't do that until after you get the moral support ready. Luckily I'm invested enough in the series and talking mechanics in general or I would've put it down for at least a month. I didn't feel much fun at all from the game until that curry scene we just saw, and thats about 2 and a half hours in.

As my favorite color, I associate the color Red with more positive things like laughter and justice over anger.

I wont deny a lot of its my personal preference making me overly critical on it though, and it definitely loosens up in a few hours. I'm just hoping it doesn't tighten up again.

I don't know about art, I failed that subject my entire life. But, Video Games are more than viable as a story telling medium, since that's always been about 90% of the reason I play games. I think adding a scene of friendship to the Opening before jumping into the Casino wouldve worked wonders for early game motivation, its not like the box art isnt right there. I don't think there's anything wrong with a story trying to induce you into a rage(12/3 P4.), but I do believe its a bad idea doing it before you're invested in the story.

Everyone else is hearing bad sources/isnt really interested in anything but persecuting him in the first place, yknow the lovely side of human nature. The law is corrupt the world over, if someone with money and influence wants you hosed, you get hosed. Its not really a cultural difference, but it is a Japan flavored version. Its also not that unrealistic, but the game is doing everything it can to anger you which pushes it back to cartoony, not that theres actually a way to do this kind of plot tastefully.

The real question is where the protag lived, because he moved to Tokyo, chances are you wouldnt run into anyone like that outside of Tokyo.

This dungeon is just full of great little dialogue if you take the time to examine everything, I was in here for an entire hour.

Now that I'm on my computer I can address this better.

If you meant the Calendar aspect of time management, I think you're out of luck. Persona is completely unique in such a fleshed out time management aspect combined with a fully functioning RPG to my knowledge. Closest you get is Rune Factory and its parent, Harvest Moon. I find it horrifically stressful as a completionist that never replays, so I'm thankful for that.

If you mean Talking Mechanics, Persona is neither the first nor the best at them. Not entirely sure what started them, but I'll say Private Actions in Star Ocean were the first that I know of. And it shows because jesus trying to navigate that mess and being so easy to miss tons of them or even possibly get through the games seeing none of them.

Off the top of my head, some series that use them:
Exa Pico Talk Topics (Ar Tonelico and Ar Nosurge)
Luminous Arc Intermissions(Stella Glow goes here)
Tales of Skits
Dragon Quest Party Chat(Which is also in Bravely)
Fire Emblem Supports
Rune Factory Characters Requests(Just 3, somehow or another 4 thought removing the most charming feature was a good idea)
Dangan Ronpa had one that I cant for the life of me remember the name of.
Trails of Cold Steel Bonding
If you push the definition, I'd say Suikoden's castle dialogue counts.

Other than Dangan Ronpa, I can wholeheartedly recommend all of these as Paragons of RPGness unless you have a low tolerance for Japan, in that case skip Exa Pico. Dangan Ronpa is an ADV, its not bad in anyway but to the average person they wouldnt enjoy it much and I'm personally distasteful of the killing game plot genre so I'm a bit biased against it.

I stand by Talking Mechanics as being the absolute best game mechanic to ever be invented because it lets you get more story at the cost of absolutely nothing else, and its even the best type of story, Character-focused! If anyone wants me to, I can look though all my games to kickstart my memories, but I figured this was already big enough.

Hard Difficulties need to do 3 things.

1. Reward you, more cash, more exp, better drop rates, maybe a game unique feature, Atleast one of these. And for the love of the gods, dont lower one of the others, thats not a reward.

2. Go nowhere near oneshots from normal attacks, nothing takes the fun out of something like dying before you even know it, especially in action type gameplay with AI party members.

3. Not lock content behind it, its so much suffering to have play the entire game on hard to access the hard only post game that has story contebt and things at level 200 when you just broke 100.

I'm not sure you fully understand the meaning of 'hard mode'. I'm not saying they should lower drop/xp/money returns either, that mostly just seems tedious, but giving you more of that stuff seems like it renders 'hard mode' largely pointless. It's there for people who want the game to be tougher. Asking them to do more with fewer resources might be a bad idea (inasmuch as it just encourages mindless grinding), but asking them to do more with the same resources is what hard modes are generally all about. Also, asking for a unique gameplay feature in hard mode and then complaining about locking content behind a hard mode seems like a contradiction in terms.

More to the point, though, it seems like only your first point is pertinent to the subject at hand (i.e. Persona 5), unless I'm missing something critical here.

High Risk, High Return. If youre playing hard mode, you should be rewarded for doing so in some way otherwise it really can be interpreted as some form of masochism, and that doesnt work for me at all. The unique game feature exists independent of hard mode but its one of the things that rewards for playing on hard mode can be applied to. Examples:
Bonus EXP tends to be higher in hard modes when present.
Point Systems that it makes sense to give you more points on hard.
Crafting Systems that give you better or more drops on hard, since you'd actually use them on hard.

Very few of the discussions since I last checked the thread have actually been pertinent to P5 after the first few posts, mine is alot more so and its definitely pertinent to the subject of hard modes, which are relevant to a pretty sizable majority of games. You did alot more for taking the subject off P5 by saying that if you ask me.

We should trash the entire concept and get a new one that isnt innately insulting to stories.

Just follow common decency, if someone asks you nicely not to say things in a public space, dont. If someone yells and insults you, feel free to ignore them till someone asks decently. Also since this is Arist's thread, follow his rules at all times. Speaking of, Arist, might want to add a policy section to OP to curb any arguments about this.
