To me, the problem is pacing. In A New Hope, we see Luke block one drone shot with the Force, and then he does the one big shot at the end. He didn't start doing really cool poo poo on the regular until he trained with Yoda, in an entirely separate movie..

In TFA, Rey performs a whole ton of cool Force poo poo with no training and it all happens super super fast thanks to JJ Abrams and his "go go go go go" style of directing. I'm not saying she's a Mary Sue, but that's where the perception comes from.

Neither Luke nor Rey are Mary Sues, case closed; hell even Katniss is just kinda bland.

The only purestrain Mary Sues I can think of are Bella/Edward in Twilight and well a bunch of male anime protagonists because anime is terrible.

Johnny in The Room is the purest expression of Mary Sue I can think of. Everyone praises him, he's an obvious author insert, and he ends up being too good for the world.

Here I think the problem was Ren doing the most amazing thing ever in the first 5 minutes of the move (freezing the bolt with the Force), which is a great way to set him up as a powerful villain, but is maybe raising the stakes too much.

Honestly in spite of that the impression I always got of Ren is that he's just kind of a loser. I mean he's got the goofy overcompensating lightsaber that to me gives the impression of being only barely functional and spends most of his time doing just kind of pitiful poo poo. Then he gets his poo poo wrecked and fights someone else before he fights Rey, who's meanwhile in max motivation mode which is generally where the Force starts being a serious wildcard.

Which is why it's weird to show him pulling that off early on. It would be more effective if we slowly realize all his power is projection and he's actually a rookie.

Don't you think poo poo has changed from the New Deal era? Do you think we could get away with passing "welfare but only for whites" without a shitload of lawsuits and challenges from the courts?
