As I recall from my Neogaf days he was Gamergate...adjecent(?) for a bit when there were still a few rubes who actually thought it was a anti-shill, pro-consumer thing but he's since done a 180. He's good people.

As far as I can tell not really. At least not by the time the general internet hate mob became formalized as gamergate. Jim's angry mboy about feminism days were well before gamergate was around. The closest thing was saying "hey maybe the gamers are dead articles were poorly timed".

Also I'm pretty sure that his character is meant to make fun of people who call him a fascist for giving zelda a 7/10 on his review site.

That's my whole point. If you live in say Georgia for a while it's pretty obvious why the Reformation looks like a big rear end mistake. I mean you've got a Protestant sponsored terrorist group right there, the KKK, and various other Protestant terrorist groups that aren't explicitly endorsed but still wear their religion with pride.

That said, Gauv and Midi are right, liturgical churches are more appealing for a 100% fresh convert. The feeling of a big church service is more important than squabbles over who can have stale crackers or how to pay for missionaries (real divisions in my denomination). Which sucks cause they'll never know the joys of judging a church that starts at the right time (11 AM).

A central tenant of Lutheranism is that deeds mean nothing and faith is the only determinant of a proper Christian. This is understandably rather off putting.

The proper time to start Mass is at 5 pm on a Saturday.

I'm saying that if American Protestantism is the only post Reformation Protestantism you've been exposed to it'd be pretty easy to see why you'd come away with a very negative opinion that you might not also put on Catholicism. I know that European Protestants mostly got the whole murder people for believing the wrong thing out of their system with the 30 Years War.

The only purestrain Mary Sues I can think of in professionally published fiction are Bella/Edward in Twilight and well a bunch of male anime protagonists, because anime is terrible.

It is but there are a lot of crazy mountain people and only a fairly small minority are violent. Most just want to be left alone. This depends on how you became a slave. If you couldn't speak Latin and looked poor it was entirely possible to be press-ganged into a salt mining job with a 20-50% annual mortality rate because you "looked like a slave". The markers weren't brown skin and curly hair but there was still definitely a slave look that was recognized. Hell if you want a very very mild modern version accent snobbery/pronunciation instantly identifying your social class and income up until fairly recently in England.

That's super sour grapes. If your primary happiness comes from making achievable sums of money then you're just suffering from Stockholm Syndrome for capitalism. Having enough money that you will never be able to spend it removes a massive horrible thing from your life, same as escaping an abusive home, or recovering from a long term injury.
