http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/04/25/emmanuel-macron-is-everything-hillary-clinton-was-not-french-elections/quote:Macron’s success raises the question of whether center-left regimes are foundering under the weight of an unpopular platform or simply unpopular leaders. Although crucial blocs of voters in many countries undoubtedly favor retreating from global institutions like NATO and the European Union, it’s not clear whether such views actually command a majority in any country, perhaps not even in the United Kingdom, where multiple surveys indicate that most voters, faced with a weakening pound, wish Brexit had failed.

quote:One of Mr. Mélenchon’s top aides derided the candidate’s critics in a telephone interview Tuesday. “You’ve got to look at where the criticism is coming from,” said Éric Coquerel, a member of the Paris regional council. quote:If an additional sign was needed to show that the mobilization against the presence of the National Front in the second round of the presidential election is much lower than that of 2002, the unions have just given it . Fifteen years ago, all the unions, with the exception of FO, had demonstrated together against the extreme right. In 2017, there will be no single parade. http://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs...38_4355770.html Also gotta love that the French word for overseas is "ultramarine."

When I visited Quebec there were nightly student protests going on and the T.V. news referred to them as "manifestation nocturne" which sounded cool as hell. That'd be a great name for a gothic rock band. There was also a chain of gas stations / bodegas / convenience stores called Couche Tard with an owl mascot. I laughed because I am a yokel and French is a strange language to me. Company owns a ton of stores around the world under different names and in the U.S. BrutalistMcDonalds has issued a correction as of 21:31 on Apr 27, 2017 |

Yeah and a lot of English language stuff. And #MFGA which is kind of an rear end-backwards way of appealing to French nationalists who are a tad sensitive about the English language. I think France has a relatively low percentage of its population which is conversant in English too. Looks like about 39 percent. Just a guess but Le Pen voters seem like the types less likely to understand English or care to. If you don't, you're at a disadvantage in a globalized economy anyways.
