The original MOO was before I started playing video games. Interesting to see how the space 4X genre got started.

It looks like the techs he's skipping over are staying on until he gets around to them. Which is distinctly unlike MoO2 where every tech gained from a given branch moves you up a step and permanently locks you out of those you skipped, unless you steal or trade for them later. Unless you're playing the Psilons, of course, who have a ridiculous advantage in being able to research a full tier of each branch at once, the cheating bastards. :v:

In this case I kind of prefer MoO2 since it makes each choice much more hard-set. You can't just put something off until later, unless you know there's someone you can get it from, and your choices affect your tech layout much more drastically.

I'm not a fan of psilons in this series in general. The lifeblood of just about every 4X game is science, and I've never seen a 4X race/faction whose hat is being much better at science than everyone not being the best race in the game or very close to it barring weird overpowered special factions.

A little(Moreso thanks to a recent hospital visit). I have never had a successful military encounter in Master 2. Not one. Because I do not understand the shipbuilding, and nothing seems effective. Ships die, spaceports die, planets are invaded wholesale. I don't even know what I'm missing. I can build up my colonies, but I can't, apparently, protect them.

I'm in the camp that dislikes the omnipresence of ship designers in space 4X games for this reason. Just give me a preset list of ships and a clear explanation of what each ship does, thank you.

Eh. For all the good MOO did for the genre, it also introduced something I hate: ship designers, and it's nigh impossible to find a space 4X that doesn't have one.

I know. This is the second Master of Orion-related thread I've seen you complain about it in this week. You must have hated Mr. Potato head as a child.

To the contrary, I think unit customization and even unit creators can be done well and intuitively - Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is one I'll always hold up as easy to understand and use.

My issues might have more to do with the complexity of the underlying mechanics than with the unit designer, admittedly, but they're gameplay elements that feed into each other. The more combat mechanics are present, the more options any unit designer by necessity fields, and the complexity can quickly skyrocket.

I get that that kind of thing appeals to some people, but it's persistently an enormous turn-off for me in games that I'd otherwise find appealing and interesting, and MOO/2 were genre defining games that made that mechanic a staple of the genre.

Forgive me for being irritated that a genre I otherwise enjoy has such a hard time escaping from a mechanic I hate.

It's always so weird swapping away from Silicoids and suddenly having to pay attention to planetary environments again.

One reason I barely played anything but Harmony in Endless Space. Being able to colonize anything you drat well feel like from the beginning of the game (with some caveats about what's worth colonizing) is such a nice advantage.

I love how the tiger (Is it wild? It looks wild) reacts to the box just like my own cats do :allears: They really aren't that far removed, are they? I think I read that somewhere, that domestic cats aren't really all that far removed from their wilder cousins, whereas dogs are humanity's great attempt at LEGO genetics.

Indeed they're not (though that particular tiger is in a zoo), though domestic cats belong to a different family from the big cats - notably cheetahs are in the same family of wildcats as domestic cats. How can you tell? Cheetahs meow like house cats, they can't roar.

And yes, where humanity sought out and domesticated and bred wolves into dogs, cats... just kinda domesticated themselves. I'm completely serious, humanity had no active part in turning the African Wildcat into domestic cats beyond our settlements providing shelter, attracting food (in the form of vermin eating our crops), and scaring away big predators. The wildcats completely on their own self-selected for docility, ability to live in close quarters with numerous other cats and humans (wildcats on their own are very solitary and territorial), and general willingness to get along with humans. And they will revert right back, a feral cat is for all intents and purposes a wildcat but feral cats will form cooperative colonies when food is plentiful the same way the original wildcats domesticated themselves to take advantage of humanity.

Humans sought out and tamed wolves and turned them into dogs over the course of hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. Cats just showed up one day and moved in with us.

I know this is supposed to be cute (and it is), but seeing kittens scratch and bite without fur to protect them has got me all :ohdear:

Kittens (and cats) don't scratch or bite that hard - and when they do, the other cat basically calls them an rear end in a top hat and gets them to back off.

Humans tend to get scratched and bitten by cats because we ignore a cat that emphatically doesn't want to be bothered right now, don't teach them in a way a cat would understand how rough is too rough when playing, or both.
