Seriouspost have you read "Book of the Long Sun" by Gene Wolfe, it attempts to answer these things It has a generational ship the size of a continent and the people onboard don't know they are cargo, they worship gods that are software, oh and the pope is a vampire

^^ Interest growingresar posted:how's that sci-fi? He's a decent dude surprisingly - he's been trying to keep the gods from appearing for at least 100 years so that people don't realize how depraved some of them are. The government surrounding the characters has been taken over by never aging androids who have similarly become twisted shells of humans and the Pope gets them to step the gently caress off when a schoolteacher nun is about to be tortured. The schoolteacher nun becomes a general in a revolutionary army fighting the android government

i like it, but first we must place the beast called "the market" in chains. freedom is for humanity not abstractions. it serves us, not we it then once we stop killing earth and ourselves, we bring our gay communism to the stars gay space communism

best thing about The Expanse is that the Earth is basically a social democratic paradise, but it's hosed up anyway because it still has to practice imperialism on the outer planets. Berniecrats should take notes.

Nebakenezzer posted::high-five: Yeah, New Sun takes a lot of concentration and rereading to tease out everything, because of the archaic phrasing, the fact that the narrator is super unreliable, he comes from a super far off future and describes weird things flippantly as if they're just known, and there's also lots of spacetime fuckery (like how Severian is a normal human until he becomes bonded with the white fountain all the way in the coda, but because he does so in the future he is already bonded in the past, so he's already the Apollo savior figure even before he did anything to become it) just to make everything even more twisty, as if everything else wasn't enough. Plus Gene just loves playing around with weird forms. Like, there's an entire story told in totalitarian slogans about the glorious leaders because the guy telling it comes from a nation where no one in the underclass understands their language and are taught to communicate entirely in government approved phrases. Or the allegorical play that Baldanders and Dr. Talos put on. Or or or I love those damned books.
