The soundtrack is awesome though?

The thing that took me from 'this will probably be good' to 'I cannot loving wait for this' was when they announced that Brian Reitzell would be doing the soundtrack. He also did the soundtrack for Hannibal and that was one of the things that made the show for me.

I'm really, really looking forward to her portrayal of the character tbh. She killed it in Hannibal and The Fall

She's only gotten better throughout her career, she honestly might be my favorite working actor now.

My picky-as-hell friend (I had to prod him into trying "Deadwood" and "The Wire" for crying out loud) who has never read anything by Gaiman is super into it after the first episode. He was texting me throughout the premiere and I asked him as a non-book reader how he liked it. He said "I've got no real clue on what's going on narrative wise, but what they've put on the screen is endlessly engaging." First episode might grab you by the nuts, or your hesitancy might sour the experience. I'd say go in with an open mind and if you don't like it, you're only out an hour.

The last new show I watched before this was Legion, and I am jazzed as hell that 'bizarre nonlinear intentionally vague loving fantastically weird-looking TV that cares more about creating a vibe than being primarily focused on plot' is perhaps becoming a thing. Pan's Labyrinth and The Fall and Hero are up there with my favorite movies ever, but making a TV show along those lines probably wouldn't have flown even 5 or 6 years ago.

(And based on interviews with Noah Hawley, apparently a lot of poo poo in Legion was partly inspired by him watching the last season of Hannibal and thinking 'well gently caress, that looks fun')

What a baller. For [Cloris Leachman] to turn 90 on the set of American Gods and Michael and I bringing her her birthday cake which said “I’m f–king 90” on it, at her request, was a career highlight.

Sometimes "show, don't tell" backfires. Hell it would have been more effective if they did the same general thing, but kept a sheet over her lower body so you could imagine the horrors of a giant vagina mouth instead of... what we got.

I'm verrry interested in this snippet from (of all places) the food stylist's blog (which contains a bunch of book spoilers so beware):

I want to tell you about the 3-ft vagina the prosthetic guys originally built for Bilquis’ Big Meal but I’ll get to that story later.

Interestingly, Fuller said that that scene was the original cold open of the entire show, not the Odin beach scene. They changed it because the network wanted them to start with something more masculine that still describes what's going on in the world. I think it was a good change, awesome as the Anubis scene was.

I would have much much preferred that scene as the opener. The Vikings one just sort of dragged and all the blood looked fake as hell, and the tone isn't really consistent with the rest of what we've seen so far. But I thought the Anubis thing was touching and beautifully shot and acted and also kind of terrifying at the end - it shows that even the kind gods are kinda hosed up. It would've been perfect.

I remember when this project was first announced, one of the selling points was "they're giving Bryan Fuller a huge budget, way bigger than on Hannibal!" Do networks not have accountants? How was this not, like, forseen?

Wouldn't Budget be discussed 6 months ago when it was renewed?

It seems weird that it would happen now. I wonder if we'll get the other side of the story.

Fuller was also kicked off of his own show Dead Like Me after a mere six episodes over 'creative differences.' Not to mention Star Trek, which no way was that only about budget/timelines and nothing else.

Reading between the lines of various interviews etc I've read from various people, he seems like a guy who cast and crew absolutely love to work with and networks really kinda hate, because he has A Vision and fights like hell to achieve it, executives and budgets and marketability be damned. And then keeps getting critical acclaim and networks keep seeing dollar signs and they somehow forget that dude is notorious for not really caring about dollar signs.

I associate Fuller mostly with Pushing Daisies, so that is not all he does.

Yeah when he got Hannibal people were like, why did they give this dark serial killer drama to the guy who only makes quirky hyper-colorful shows about the power of friendship and love? And then he got more well-known for Hannibal and suddenly he was The Most Darkest Bloodiest TV Auteur.

I make fun of him lately, but in his defense, anyone know if there’s truth to the rumor that Anne Rice is a nightmare to work with?

All I know about Anne Rice personally is that she spent a lot of time suing the crap out of people who wrote fanfiction of her work, so I wouldn't be surprised.

The opening to episode 3 is probably the greatest thing in the first season.

I read somewhere that it was originally planned to be the opening of the first episode, which I think would have been a far better choice.
