i absolutely loved hollow knight and took about 45 hours to fully 100% it. the funny thing is, though, that i forgot to go back to where salubra is after getting the dash and didn't have access to the charm shop for...a solid chunk of the game

yeah, there's absolutely no upwards dodge. i'm pretty sure that would also break more than a few ability-gated jumps and the like

for some reason i'd been under the impression that the mantis lords were a required boss to get into deepnest, but looking back they really obviously weren't. that said, i got tunnelvision when i got to that part and beat them without any nail or damage upgrades at all for some dumb reason. it got to the point where i could dodge everything easily but it took forever to beat any of them.

deepnest is definitely a pain in the rear end but it's definitely by design

it won't be super obvious until it's fully gone through, but, deepnest is pretty much intended to be a hostile gauntlet of a bunch of weird crap compared to other areas that are in a similar difficulty range. i'm glad that it looks like people aren't voting to go there anyways because it genuinely wouldn't make for a fun video at this point in the game and i can't even think of any particular reasons to go in there over anywhere else, especially when one of the best areas in the game is right around the corner.

spells can really start cleaning up if you use certain charm load outs, at least. their versatility let's them keep pace with your nail throughout the game.

Also I take umbrage with your statement that Dead Cells is trying to be like Dark Souls. They say that in the promotional stuff cause souls-like is a buzzword now, but the game plays nothing like Dark Souls.

yeah, actually. if anything it plays like an old castlevania game, just with semi-randomized layouts. otherwise it's just general videogamey stuff that i'd have a hard time attributing to dark souls in particular if anything. fun as hell, at least.

i think soul sanctum doesn't get a 'full' intro because it's more like a sub-area in a bigger one and it's technically not necessary to beat the game. there's optional places with full title cards, but i think they're more substantial as a zone.

also a neat, if slight, detail that's easy to miss is that those 'ghost' enemies called mistakes and follies have the same crystal-looking nodes on their heads that the teleporting wizard enemies and the soul master had

there was some shady poo poo going down at the soul sanctum

Oh, character and level design that communicates story, how I love you.

hollow knight does it REALLY well, so get hype for even more stuff spread throughout the game. i guess people associate that sort of thing with the souls games a lot, but i dunno if they can really lay claim to what's just an alternate way of giving information. it's nice when a game actually pulls it off in a satisfying way.

the bugs sitting there with all the orange gas around their head while they dream is kinda like the first stages of the infection. if they'd progressed further i'm sure they wouldn't have been coherent enough to be woken up. not that there's timed npcs in the game. you could leave those two sitting there until the end of the game if you really wanted to for whatever reason.

also, i had a super easy time with the broken vessel, etc., because if you just equip a bunch of charms that boost your swing speed/range/whatever then you can just go ham and beat the hell out of it while it can't do much to react. one of the few bosses in the game that you can actively just stunlock due to the times when it slumps over every now and then giving you even more time to crank out more damage

one of the good examples of how much the game lets you vary your playstyles

yeah, sometimes i would get use out of a range extender but your damage output is so goddamn high with quick slash to the point where i could just straight up stunlock certain bosses. not all that useful against certain things for sure, but it's amazing otherwise.

demons souls and bloodborne are DEFINITELY some of the tightest experiences when it comes to that stuff out of the whole fromsoft catalog. there being 3 dark souls games meant that things started drifting away at breakneck speed as they went along and layers upon layers were put in place.

i like the way all the games present that sort of background info but it's nice when there's games like hollow knight that are relatively self-contained with how they portray stuff.

i think the 'champion' bit refers to the idea that the particular grub in that armor was picked out of the group to try and be their champion by using it, since they're otherwise pretty weak compared to other bugs

as a heads up you can keep going back to talk to the midwife in deepnest. she has more things to say, with some little scraps of background info as well, but it all inevitably ends up with her trying to eat you. you can also pop her in the face and it causes her mask to shut again, at which point she disappears into the wall.

i feel like the game does a decent job of hinting that the hive is there, even looking past the secret little bit that inadvertently gives a glimpse of it. there's a couple areas where you either get in/out of the hive that have little bees floating around and if you're checking the map there's a pretty sizable chunk missing until you get into it.

it's probably one of my favorite depictions of a hive i've ever seen in a game, honestly

unsurprisingly it also has a hilarious interaction with the dung defender badge. it's definitely a good alternate to the normal soul blast, but with everything else in the game you just have to weigh if it's worth the slots to equip it.

on the subject of the white lady, i've seen people theorize that she's a sort of fungus given that there's some varieties that look like a bunch of webby, white root-like stuff that can spread through dirt and the like

which wouldn't be hard to believe given that there's sapient fungus hanging out

also something to be noted is that the collapsed + dead individual outside the door to the white lady's little abode was one of the 5 knights of the king

like, not to actually get into details, but that ending is arguably the 'good' one and also has more going on, so of course people are gonna want to get it. i would have less issue with the zone if it felt better-integrated with the rest of the game instead of being 'hey let's copy a bunch of whirring buzzsaws everywhere ' and actually had more meaning to the challenges in there. i feel like people go out of their way to ignore how hamhanded the implementation is to yell about how people are just whining.
