From what I've observed, NPCs that get knocked out don't give you a reward. (Presumably they don't see you fending off the monster?) If they're fighting/running and you save them, talk to them immediately before they go back to what they were doing before, and they'll give you something.

In my own game, I'd ignored this tower for quite a while, so when I finally met the guy up there I was like holy poo poo dude, how many weeks and months have passed since all the towers went up??
