Odradek posted:I participated in an awesome seminar today - this Canadian guy had been radicalized in his late teens and went over to Syria to support ISIS. He was a supporter, not a combatant. After being there for a while he realized it was BS and he returned to Canada and offered to help their Intel services. He provided some excellent insights into what drives people to support ISIS and how they can be de-radicalized. He was very animated and funny and did a great 1 1/2 hour presentation. Since it was a VTC (I'm working in Charlottesville VA and the talk was at DIA HQ in DC) it was amusing to see the reaction shots of the crowd during the presentation - lots of scowls. "This dude was an ISIS scumbag...why is he here?" Overall, good insights into a dangerous ideology and some tips on how to fight it. I like my job. I'm not a CT guy (most of my experience in in counterproliferation/nuclear stuff) but this session got me smart on some interesting stuff. Odadek you should post an AMA in this forum and use that as practice for future interviews of all varieties.

Everyone knowing that it was Russia is 100% part of the plan. It brings the entire focus of the issue's response on "what are we gonna do about it" instead of "oh gosh we better figure out who did this" [wait three months and the news cycle has moved on]. Russia's troll game is top-tier and we loving suck at combatting it.

Buca di Bepis posted:Stop the white noise "nothing matters" poo poo, even aside from the possibility of Trump going down there is a very significant shake-up unfolding before us. Until a majority of the GOP congress sees Potus as a sinking ship, they will wiggle and dance their way through whatever outrage or disappointment is necessary to not irk him while also placating constituents. Until a GOP group makes an actual move to stop the president, something they can't retract or write off if it fails, something that can actually snowball, nothing is gonna change. This whole investigation could conclude with a cabinet level official falling on their sword and nothing more. There is never a right and obvious time for party with ownership of the senate, house, and White House to suddenly forfeit the advantage. Voters don't keep score and don't reward idealolgical purity. They elected the pussy grabber, the guy who has literally not read a book in decades, who didn't release his tax returns and is not generally known to be clinically obese due to a corrupt MD's report, who dog whistled racism and made campaign promises that didn't even balance out with thirty seconds of bar napkin math. They are in this deep than we want to admit. We have a ways to go before the rats give up on the ship. Zeris fucked around with this message at 03:25 on May 18, 2017 |

psydude posted:It was an editorial piece. This does and doesn't matter. There's no hard rule against this. But any reputable newspaper should be aware of how bad they look when they publish anything, even op/eds, by someone who is paid to have that opinion. It makes the newspaper look like they got played because they're too stupid to properly verify a contributor isn't being influenced, or it makes the paper look lovely because they didn't care to check. Since the Washington Post is making its latest name on anti-corruption, clarity in government, calling a spade a spade, etc. this makes it look very dumb. On the other hand, NYT does the same thing to a certain extent. A lot of nonprofits and lobbying groups will support writers of op/eds and try to get them into well-known papers. They usually go through the front door, though, and disclose the exact affiliation within the op/ed itself. That's actually an example of a newspaper fulfilling a civic duty, with respect to the notion that an opinion is at least worth hearing out if there's a lot of resources and/or believers in it. Sneaking it in looks pretty dumb. But nobody reads the corrections, so it's already over with. Zeris fucked around with this message at 17:52 on May 24, 2017 |
