Niwrad posted:Looks like maybe they didn't. Chicago media reporting Cardinals offered more money. I took that to mean that the Cardinals offered more money but he signed with the Sox despite it. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm too used to the Cardinals losing out on bids at this point. Until Mo tells me differently I'll assume Robert's going to Low Interest Ballpark.

Sydin posted:Yep. Sounds like the Cardinals offered slightly more but the ChiSox pulled the same thing the Cubs did with Lester a few years ago and put together some kind of video presentation that swayed him to sign with them over more money. Between all this young talent and the fact that Cubs games are god-awful expensive, I might cave and get Sox season tickets at this rate. drat Cardinals, playing in a city I'd rather not live in.

It includes a really good postmortem on Flood v. Kuhn, which is one of the worst-written SCOTUS opinions in the last 50 years. Please note I only say "one of", because it doesn't hold the show "24" up as a basis to deny people their civil rights. I'm also a fan of "The Art of Fielding", from a fiction standpoint. As always, I will take this opportunity to remind everyone that Curt Flood and Marvin Miller should have their own wing of the Hall of Fame. Preferably with an exhibit where people can just mercilessly make fun of Blackmun's writing.

Thanks everyone who came to the meetup, it was super fun. Especially watching Kevlar get angrier and angrier with each successive Dodger home run.

Darude - Adam Sandstorm posted:There are lots of players that have come back that quickly. Harper off the top of my head did. Yadi came back from it (several times, I think) with varying degrees of success. He's seen a drop in power, but that could be associated with aging or with losing like 40 pounds to improve his longevity as a catcher.

I'm not a huge Royals fan so I'm unfamiliar; does Salvy get shoved out there way too often? His games started on BBRef don't look insane to me, but I'm spoiled with Yadi (2014 doesn't count, he missed 7 weeks with thumb surgery).

N: Albert's at 599 home runs. V: It's possible, though unlikely, that he might reach 700. Also, he's made up a ton of ground on Beltre in career hits.

Hallelujah. Makes the likely decision to start buying a lot more White Sox tickets more palatable.

Julio Cruz posted:People fell in love with him after his rookie season because a) he hit some massive dingers b) he was really good in a very small number of postseason games c) it's funny watching a fat guy run around in LF. Maddon's kept putting him in hoping that he'll manage to get it going but at this point I think he needs some time in triple A to work on his swing and lose some of the weight. Our big fat guy who hit an impressive postseason donger but can't hit lefties lost the weight and we STILL traded him.
