Ixian posted:The best thing about Snipes' case is that he didn't just fall for a tax avoidance scheme, he fell for the Section 861 scheme, which is quite possibly the dumbest of them all. Not dumb as in "bat-poo poo crazy/how do they keep a straight face" just dumb as in "how loving dumb do you have to be to believe this could work?" I mean there are real tax schemes that happen where I think "there's no way this could work" like how Romey shoved a hundred milli into an IRA through accounting magic.

Sirotan posted:My student loan servicer hosed up my repayment plan switch (again), so I got frustrated and hit up Reddit to see if anyone else was having similar issues. Got off on a bit of a tangent: It's actually pretty easy if you make a doctor's salary? I'd rather pay back 500k on a 250k+/year salary than 100k on a 50k/year salary. It's the conspicuous consumption hole that many fresh doctors fall into which leads into the debt snowballing.

Bird in a Blender posted:Isn't the 401k limit $18,000 per year? That's what google tells me. 15% of $13,000 is $23,400 for the year, so that's $5,400 I just saved this guy. Unless he's counting 401k plus Roth IRA, I think that would cover both. Again though, if his employer matches anything at all into his 401k, he could be putting in less money per month. He may actually be hurting himself there. I had a boss who was trying to max out his 401k and was dumping tons of money in per paycheck. Our employer did a match, and would deposit money every month. My boss reached the limit in November. Well once you reach your limit, the employer also can't match anything, so he lost out on some matching money. Our employer also gave out 401k bonuses, but if you hit your limit, you couldn't take that money either. I think My employer does a true up at the end of the year so you get the full matching even if you hit the max early and the 401k bonus should apply to the combined limit not the individual contribution limit anyway. What am I missing?

Drunk Tomato posted:Which reminds me, I have a friend who thought, upon graduating nursing school, that the average nurse's salary for the area was $500,000. Yeah. The brokerage lends you money to trade on “margin.” In return they have the right to liquidate your position if it drops too far to protect their loan, called a “margin call”. Leverage is great on the way up but not so hot on the way down and particularly silly in a volatile market. If the price drops 50% but shoots up 1000000% a few moments later, you’ll never realize those gains because the margin call will liquidate your position on the drop.

I'm sure if you ask really nicely the brokerage will refund your losses. After all they have so much money and you have so little.

Luna Was Here posted:It depends entirely on the viewership you get and how you leverage that. Someone who gets like 300 viewers a day probably makes somewhere in the realm of $3k a month between ad revenue, subscription money, sponsor money and affiliate links. The higher your viewership the more likely you are to get noticed by people just scrolling through the list, which turns into more viewers and more subs/donations. I think it's way more lucrative to be a Livestreamer than it is to be a YouTuber, simply because the number of revenue streams at your disposal is much higher. Add on to the fact that most of the "expenses" these guys have are things they likely had already (pc, mic, internet, gaming console). The biggest barrier to entry these guys face is simply getting the audience, because it's a lot harder to get discovered on twitch than it is on yt, since there is no metadata system to game for views Ok but how much do you make if you have cleavage
