Counterpoint: as kid I always assumed Shadowfax from LOTR was black even though he was explicitly described as white.

In Sandman, Ishtar was a fertility goddess who turned into a pole dancer due to her lack of worshippers. I think Kevin Smith might've ripped that one off for Dogma as well. Related to this, I've always wondered who is the god Shadow meets that he can't remember anything about. In the book, all Shadow remembers is that he had an impression of great wealth or something like that so I figure he must be a god with some worshipers.
