precision posted:Her first scene is right after the House, yeah. Almost nothing happens before the House in the book, Shadow and Wednesday do the bank robbery and then go meet Mr. Nansi and that's pretty much it. I thought the Chicago stuff happened before then? I'm looking forward to it, I spent a bunch of time with elderly Eastern European immigrant relatives as a kid and that part struck me as shockingly well-observed. I may have even been (jokingly) threatened with being hit with a hammer once or twice. Also, thanks for the thread, OP! Crow Jane fucked around with this message at 12:47 on May 2, 2017 |

True story, my bf's last name is Moon. Most names sound pretty stupid and fake in front of it. I have a fairly unusual first name, and if I was to take his surname I'd sound like either a porn star, a superhero, or a psychic. The relationship is probably doomed.

DentD posted:So, it's been awhile since I last gave the book a re-read. I don't remember: did Wednesday know from the get go that Shadow was his kid? Yeah, for sure, that's why he sought him out, sent Low-key to watch over him, etc. Shadow doesn't know til the end though. Also the whole bit where he was acting like a doddering old man at the airport "my son usually takes care of these things", "I'm going to his christening", etc, is definitely foreshadowing. I'm loving Ian McShane in this even more than I thought I would, and that's saying something. Crow Jane fucked around with this message at 15:51 on May 2, 2017 |

From what I've read from reviewers who've seen the first four episodes, we're definitely getting multiple insane sex scenes. One said that this could possibly end up being the most controversial television show ever, and I for one am stoked. My dad passed away in January, and he loved mythology, history and Ian McShane, really enjoyed the book and was pumped for the show. I'm super bummed I can't talk to him about it. Wasn't Loki pretty heavily involved with killing Dream in Sandman? It's not the American Gods version, obviously, but I think he was able to pass himself off as a regular dude. Been a while since I've read it, though

Didn't Mad Sweeney get an origin story though? With the Irish girl who came over as an indentured servant? It's been like five years since I've read the book, I could be completely misremembering. My boyfriend doesn't get home til 10:30, it's sort of agonizing waiting to watch this.

^^^^That's super cool. Having watched the episode a second time, I realized the scenes inside Bilquis' womb sort of reminded me of Sandman art. The arm busting out of frame in the first ep did too, come to think of it, though I may be reaching.

Carnivals, circuses or dive bars might also work, though the train idea is gold. I realize I'm fantasy casting for a role that probably doesn't exist, but tbf there was a verse or two from I believe "Tango Til They're Sore" used as a chapter heading in the book, and a girl can dream

I like Neil Gaiman a lot, obviously, but I think I do sort of enjoy his imagination a bit more than I enjoy his actual writing. And the amount of research that goes into his stuff is pretty cool. I was a huge mythology/folklore nerd as a kid, and he sort of rekindled my interest in it as an adult, which I'm kinda grateful for. Plus Sandman and this show have rad art, and I think his stuff is helped a lot by having a visual element

Shows can definitely have both lasting broad appeal and critical acclaim while being obtuse and slow moving (see my av for an example), but I agree that there's always a chance of bloat taking over and making people lose interest (Scrubs, The X-Files, etc). I have faith (ha) in this one, though. It's been pretty perfect so far, and I think people will keep tuning in for the spectacle if nothing else. I hope, anyway.

I don't remember Odin having an affiliation with spiders, but I don't see Anansi hitching a ride in Wednesday's coattails just for the off-chance that he needs to get Wednesay out of trouble in some way. Also given Anansi's personality I wouldn't want to rely on a drat trickster god in a pinch. That's just asking for trouble. He introduces the spider to Shadow as Mr. Nancy, doesn't he? It's definitely him
