http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/myths-over-miami-6393117quote:Folktales are usually an inheritance from family or homeland. But what if you are a child enduring a continual, grueling, dangerous journey? No adult can steel such a child against the outcast's fate: the endless slurs and snubs, the threats, the fear. What these determined children do is snatch dark and bright fragments of Halloween fables, TV news, and candy-colored Bible-story leaflets from street-corner preachers, and like birds building a nest from scraps, weave their own myths. The "secret stories" are carefully guarded knowledge, never shared with older siblings or parents for fear of being ridiculed -- or spanked for blasphemy. But their accounts of an exiled God who cannot or will not respond to human pleas as his angels wage war with Hell is, to shelter children, a plausible explanation for having no safe home, and one that engages them in an epic clash. This article isn't directly related to the show but drat if it doesn't give me the same forlorn vibes. I hadn't realized this was out, psyched to watch the first episode. The book portrays that drab midwestern road tribe perfectly.

Yeah, that "reveal" was painfully obvious even before Loki became a villain in an enormous movie franchise.

Fun fact: Czernabog (as Chernabog) is also the name of that big black devil guy from the Fantasia scene. In his last days before being relegated to nonbelief he was conflated with the christian devil as the slavs were converted. Also IIRC there is no extant reference or fairy tale referring to Bielebog, but his existance can be presumed because there are places named after Czernabog that are often twinned with places that logically would be named after Bielebog (eg Black God Hill next to an auspiciously-named White God Hill.)

Isn't she also reading a book about egyptian mythology during the opening montage? If she's an atheist who is surrounded by egyptian kitsch and knows a bit of the mythology Anubis makes as much sense as anyone.

The Mr. Nancy scene was perfect but at this point I'm kinda wondering why it was inserted so early? If you don't know who he is from the book you must be wondering where Cool Suit Guy went. I was initially thinking/hoping that every episode would open with a Coming to America.

She also works right next to statues of Thoth and Anubis. Not just in an egyptian casino, but specifically of all the more famous gods her stand is next to Thoth and Anubis. IDK if there's any story meaning or it's just foreshadowing, but she's surrounded by them all her life.

It's interesting to think that in this setting, there may well be "new" gods that are already on their way out, seeing as how 19th and early 20th century values have largely gone from widespread to ridiculed. Mr. W. M. Burden living in a flat in Manchester with his wife, Britney Anna. Mr. Krasnyi, who immigrated from Russia, drinks a lot of vodka, and still calls everyone "comrade." Baron von Kultur living on stipend in Vienna, and his estranged brother who runs with a neonazi gang in Dresden. Is there an Enlightenment Jesus out there somewhere looking forlornly on all the more popular, younger Jesuses, or maybe a decrepit Cathar Jesus working as a prof of medieval comparative religion. Maybe all the european Jesuses work together to counter the decline of christianity there. Turkish Allah pulling a coup on the spirit of Ataturk?

Also, maybe there's a talking head god of conservative talk shows who goes around TOTALLY DESTROYING liberal atheist professors, and he's friends with whichever Jesus owns guns and considers America his chosen people.

dead comedy forums posted:A thing with the new gods that hasn't been explained (and I think it won't) is that they are not personalities, they are manifestations brought by the indirect devotion. When you watch Netflix, you are worshiping Media; using SA is worship to the Technical Boy and so on and so forth. In a way the new gods are smiting their people's enemies, too. At least the Odin guidance satellite and the promise to use it against North Korea implies that, say, the Iraq War news frenzy and subsequent military tech buildup and move in from US corporations would be pretty fuckin great for Media, Mr. World (if that were really who he was), and Technical Boy, and that they can possibly influence such things to happen. They're just sort of detached. They don't care to actively cultivate belief like the old gods have to nowadays because they don't need to. Technical Boy doesn't need priests blessing precision missiles, the american people are just so into spending billions on fighter jets to precision bomb our enemies that he's already got enough sacrifice even though no one knows his name, or at least no one thinks they do. What really makes them different is that they are concepts and not distinct entities. Thor gets nothing from belief in Zeus even though they're fulfilling a lot of the same needs for their ancient worshippers. Edgar Allen Ho fucked around with this message at 23:19 on May 31, 2017 |
