I liked the book but always thought they were gonna adapt it into a show by taking the book + spinoffs + sidestories? Otherwise I don't get how you make an entire season as slowly as they are going.

I haven't watched yet but the imagery looks amazing so far, translated better than I could have imagined it

Expanding the side characters will make a better show than adapting the book directly imo, I have a feeling the show will be remembered more fondly than the books

Now that the episode has aired everywhere I can share some stuff from the Q&A

Mousa, who plays the Jinn, watched gay porn and called up gay friends to ask them about accurately portraying gay intercourse. When it came time to shoot, the director told Mousa and Omid how to act and Mousa got to use his new knowledge to correct the director on sexual positions.

The dong was originally going to be 11 inches. The production designer started with that, not conceiving that anyone would want it to be a different size.

Mousa and Omid knew each other before this show because middle eastern actors basically all know each other. They were extremely grateful they got to play middle eastern men who weren't terrorists or sidekicks.

as a middle eastern man, oddly heartwarming

But I did notice that too, when he switched back to English. I thought it was especially funny that he cursed in Arabic (Your mother's oval office!) and then a few minutes later he gets cut off again and he curses in English (gently caress!! poo poo!!)

Also accurate to real life (including that specific swear)

I have to say I really like the Laura scene with Audrey

Honestly this is better than the book as an adaptation

This is what really bugs me about it. There's huge religious conflicts and dramas in America, and this isn't about them.

Like, there isn't a conflict between pagan values and techy capitalist ones in the US. Or, there is, but it doesn't look like this, Bilquis vs The Internet, unless it's 1997 and you're a wiccan mom who just heard about orgone. If he wanted to write the same thing but for real it would be like Jesus living on a ranch in montana with 144,000 sister wives and railing against the government while secretly trading slaves and DAPL stock on a smartphone powered by sickle cell anemia. It would just be a brutal political cartoon.

And the show is doing this much better than the book
