Gerrard V is one of my favourite levels of the game, or at least I remember playing it a whole lot.

I think I know which mission you're talking about. Gerrard V has a nice amount of hectic to keep you busy throughout the entire level, and its an escort mission that isn't strict or annoying. Its sort of like if Corellia had a little less downtime.

Not gonna lie, the whole "I've been disabled for two minutes, would you kindly stop shooting at me now?" bit made me laugh. That whole mission seemed really tense and action-packed, with Interceptors being downed left and right - gotta love a nice spiraling out of control animation.

I love the mention of Gold squadron. So full of pride :3:

As I recall, they're no longer made due to a mass amount of them being lost.
But this was before Disney.

Also your shields only regenerate if you haven't lost your R2 unit. If you have, gone forever.

It always feels weird going after the gold medals. Whenever I get a gold I feel like that run was so hosed but runs I feel that are super fast end up being over time.

...don't get me started about "friendly saves" on a couple of the last missions.

It's particularly droll to drop bombs on the Stormtroopers to hear a choir of badly synthesised screams.

But the most harrowing sound in a videogame that springs to mind is running over infantry in Dune II. There's the start of the death scream that's then overshadowed by a horrifying crunching sound.

It can be seen in the video itself in the video after the first death where the X-Wing health drops to orange and by the time the Advanced Shields powerup is found it's back up to green.

Strong Bad,
you're a horse's twees.
On the topic of rear gunners, there is exactly one time you get to do that in a Rogue Squadron game. In the co-op version of 2, featured in the third game, there is a mission, Imperial Academy Heist. Both players have to board the shuttle Tydirium before the player can use it. The first player is relegated to the pilot cockpit, whereas the second player will use its aft gun to shake off the pursuing TIEs.

I remember buying the steam version of this a year ago or so and tried to play it again. I'd forgotten how clunky the controls felt on a keyboard and I don't have a gamepad so I kinda shelved that idea.
As said in the video, it has not aged well.

The camera in particular is abhorrent for KB+M, having to cycle through a bunch of useless modes to find like one of two that worked properly was too much to stand, in a game that pretty much demands perfect ship control for the gold medals. It really is one of the few games on PC I've played that's gamepad or bust.

You don't need perfect control, but some maps ARE harder than others in how strict they are. Some of the higher kill counts come to mind, especially when combined with a required high accuracy total.

It's not that bad abusing a fighter we haven't seen yet and its special weapon. The hardest mission, minus the one I didn't actually beat, was one that involved not letting a single friendly vehicle you're escorting die.

Meanwhile I could never make KBM really work for me when I tried playing it. It was always a bit off in the sensitivity which annoyed me.
Can't remember how I could stand it back when I played it as a kid. But then again I never did better than the occasional silver.

IIRC, the thing about the shuttle that arrives in Kile II is that it flies in the direction of the sensor array so you can follow it - pointless if you destroy the sensor array first but handy if you tend to get lost in the canyons. Another trick is the Imperial garrison that gets pointed out, each of those buildings spawns a dozen or stormtroopers when destroyed. One bomb can easily kill thirty or forty of them.

Prisons is one level that on kbm I got a gold medal with the a-wing rather than the final fighter. Sure the a-wing is inferior to the x-wing in every respect in this game, but's a much better looking fighter and this mission isn't particularly good for the final fighter's unique strengths.

Fuck you say?!

You beat a mission in a Y-Wing. Now you are the leader of Gold Squadron. You now are the leader of the Y-wings!

Also R2 didn't get a memory wipe at the end of Ep3. It was 3P0

Taking out the Lambda shuttle with the ion cannons is hilarious as it flips the gently caress out while crashing.

Also, I remember having the tech book which detailed the non-movie ships in this game. I thought it was totally kick-rear end to see AT-PTs and Sentinel-class transports. Christ, I can't believe I remember those names.

I am really glad to see this game in LP. I played countless hours on the N64 version. Some of the later levels get downright unfair at times so I'm curious to see how you pull it off. Really good flying to get gold medals though. I remember the missile turrets being a lot more destructive to go up against. This game also has some fun glitches in it such as being able to fly over the canyon walls of Kile 2. I'm not sure if it's the PC version, but it seems like the AI vehicles bounce in around in your recordings instead of flying smoothly like I remember on the N64 version.

Are you going to play the other Rogue Squadron games and other spinoffs like Battle for Naboo and the Clone Wars game on the Gamecube? If you play Battle for Naboo, make an attempt of all platinum medals.

Honestly, I would love to extend this and do all the Star Wars flight sim games, but some are either too hard or impossible for me to get footage of, seeing as I don't have a capture card. I've yet to do any proper tests with Rogue Squadron 2, so I'll see how some tests work out after the first game is done before I commit to anything.

If anyone has a way to run it at 60fps constantly on Dolphin then I'm more than happy to do 2 and 3... (and 2 looks like it may be ok)

On the note of strategic dying, my favorite gold medal is from Rogue Squadron II. *record scratch* oh, Jobbo hopes to be able to LP that. Hold off, then. Good timing on the post before I broke spoiler policy.

Let me just say gently caress all Y-Wing missions in this game. 20ish years on and I still remember them being a hard stop.

So far, Dolphin tends to crash when doing special stuff in RS2, RS3 is just choppy as hell for me right now.

Maybe I should record it off-screen with my phone or something...

I think that is just Dolphin doing its thing. Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance crashed every 20 minutes for me. Hopefully you can figure it out, though.
