Any desire to take Euron seriously - even with his new makeover - is instantly washed away because of how much he looks like Pacey from Dawson's Creek. I mean, seriously, could they not give him a longer hair and an eyepatch?

Also the Hound scenes were really good. I liked that he buried the bodies. And how cheerful Thoros was even though The Hound kept giving him poo poo

On the other hand, they managed to turn Ramsay from a pretty bland brute into a genuinely entertaining and menacing psychopath. Similar with Roose, who I'd say worked way better than the pseudo vampire lord book version.

Show Roose was pretty good, aye, and so was Ramsay, at least before they just had to amp him up to a 1000. At the end he became boring, like when you have watched too many slasher films.

I much preferred the old suave Daario compared to Mr. Bland. He didn't need a blue beard, but he had the Daario look.

Oh, and by the way, is Edmure written out of the show or something? IIRC he should still be at the cells at The Twins. Did he die on the way to his home planet?

I started reading the books only after seeing the first season of the TV show. I can't imagine how the wait has felt to anyone who has been reading the series for a way longer time.

TeaJay

At this rate, we all will be dying of old age before the series is finished.

TeaJay
Oct 9, 2012

At this point I will be happy when we (eventually) get Winds of Winter, but it's beginning to look like GURM is gonna croak before he has any chance to finish Dream of Spring. So if he will be adamant about no one being able to continue his work, the TV show might be the only source of an ending for the series we'll get?

TeaJay
Oct 9, 2012

The Sand Snakes were clearly the bad guys on the show at this point, so I guess the writers mean for us to cheer for Euron then? I wonder what he will do the rest of the season, since all I remember reading in the leaks was this part.

Theon had the right idea of fleeing, but man, I just felt so bad, what the hell is he gonna do now. A daring rescue of Ashayara? Just get on the boat with Gendry never to be seen again? Surely he will at least meet Jon who will punch Theon around a bit?

TeaJay
Oct 9, 2012

The prophecy bit was in the books though so you gotta blame GURM for that one

Although worded a bit differently, but it was Maester Aemon who mentioned that to Sam

Grey Worm is being awfully nice for a guy who strangled a puppy.

I don't remember if the show has said anything about the Unsullied castration, but I was under the impression that they'd removed both penis and the balls.

There's no logic anymore, people can just kill the king/queen/warden whatever and take their place. Cersei blew up half the city and everyone is just cheering her for a job well done.

I realized last night that the only army in the show to ever run into logistics problems or deal with time and distance was stannis's, and 90% of that was off screen. every other army is essentially intact the entire time and appears wherever needed as long as their hero is with them. it's completely insane

It's just more proof that D&D went out of their way to screw Stannis over and make him look bad in the show.

TeaJay

The smallfolk at King's Landing is great. They just love a good penance walk / parade no matter who is organizing it. And you still have to ask why no one is calling Cersei's bullshit? Euron said it best, they just like heads on spikes.

And again, are we supposed to hate Euron? He gets poo poo done. Loved his little talk with Jaime.

Cersei's torture porn was awful. And apparently the show is not going for Jaime's restoration project. I guess he will be Team Cersei until the end, killing Tommen and blowing up the Sept is just something he briefly mentions? e: Well technically Tommen killed himself, but you know.

Was there something in the leaks about dragons and Dothraki pillaging King's Landing, or are they just gonna chill out in Dragonstone the rest of the season?

e: Bran & Sansa scene was hilariously bad. Apparently Bran lost his emotions on the way and made probably the worst explanation ever

"You were beautiful the night you got raped" :stare:

The Sam scenes have been the best so far in this season, along with Hound (where is he btw)

e: Okay, the end fights were pretty good, I guess. And poor Olenna. Apparently Tyrells had no army in the show?

Also they're not even trying with realistic pacing anymore, I wouldn't be surprised if the Unsullied just march all the way across Westeros in half an episode because LOL

So can we assume that Euron's actor was talking out of his rear end when he claimed that Euron will do stuff that will make people hate him more than Ramsay, or was he just parroting D&D who thought that killing Sand snakes would somehow be considered a horrible act of evil?

More screentime for mook 1 and mook 2 at the gates of Winterfell

Robot Bran is still stupid

Ser Horny Davos is the best

Poor Theon, he just can't catch a break

I guess LF is going to try and use the lingering distrust Sansa is still feeling towards Arya to pit them against each other, or something? I was able to gather this from the frowning Sophie Turner did

The whole fighting part was awesome but how the hell did the army didn't panic the moment they saw Drogon swoop in?

And why did Danny have her focus on destroying supplies? Oh well, I guess.

I'm still pissed Sansa won't swing the sword herself. She could bond with Arya over shanking a fool.

It would actually be a pretty nice moment for Sansa if she would echo Ned (and Jon) with the whole "The (wo)man who passes the sentence should swing the sword".

Also Arya is really dumb if she actually falls for this plot. Or can't even trail Littlefinger without being seen. Granted, Baelish is a master of subterfuge, but... Arya's training and all? Surely she has more points in Sneak than LF has in Perception

Book Euron seems like a genuinely creepy and dangerous guy, even though most of his exploits have been off-page. Show Euron is more like The Joker, laughing and having fun doing evil deeds. (well, I guess you can argue these are both sides of The Joker, one of them anyway)

TeaJay

It's one of those changes that truly boggle the mind. You had a chance to put a very tragic, heroic character on screen and what they did was abandon his whole premise for some Star Wars prequel style light saber sword choreography.

You know, when I first read those season-wide spoilers way back, the whole "we'll get a wight and show it to Cersei" sounded like stupid fanfiction with various team-ups, but hey, here we are!

All the Sansa & Arya bitse were terrible. I already said these earlier but how does she manage to get out-spied by Littlefinger with all her training?

I liked Davos & Gendry though. Maybe Sam will find a parchment saying Robert legitimized his bastards on his deathbed because why not.

Dany and Jon still have zero chemistry.

TeaJay

You are right, we should not expect subterfuge, let's just have arbitrary build-up for a few episodes and then have Bran spill the beans on Littlefinger as a "gently caress you" moment.

That spear-throwing looks really dumb. They should've just made it all magic (as in, he forms the spear with his mental powers and sends it in the air) if they can't get an actor who looks like he can actually throw a spear/javelin. Although I guess the explosion was magic, unless he hit the dragon in his fire storage or something.

A lot of the party banter was good, but ... yeesh, the Winterfell scenes were such a cringy mess I almost couldn't watch them, and all the nonsense stops came loose towards the end in the north. I mean, I read the spoilers, but it was still a ridiculous mess.

It's funny though that a lot of show-only watchers who have not read spoilers thought that this was the worst episode of the season (or EVER).

And those S8 spoilers: I don't think it's real. It's way too fanficcy, even for D&D.
