So I have shelf color questions. Most of the wood in my apartment area is a warm oak and my couch is bright loving red. Not sure what color I should lean towards on the shelf along with the support metal color?

Our lamp is a dark black with a natural linen color shade and the accent pillows are a dark navy. I was leaning black for the supports and oak for the shelves. I'm thinking white on white would be too modern and clash with my oak sideboard it's going above? Cool thing about these brackets is I can use whatever wood/MDF I find, which I'm leaning towards cheaper cause we want to move across country next year. We have low ceilings too. Would that be too much oak/too matchy? Not against painting some cheap planks if I can get my hands on some in the middle of NYC

Here are the supports. Only getting these and finding the shelves over here cause lol at the shipping MDF planks to the US

Most of the wood in your apartment is stained oak? Shelves should also be oak imo.

I’d go with the walnut shelf over black, especially if your walls are white or lighter colored. For the bracket I think walnut looks best with black enameled metal in general. A white bracket and shelf seems like it would clash with the room and I like white better with different wood tones like teak or pine.

If blood be the price of admiralty,
Lord God, we ha' paid in full!
As I am about to embark on a sizable renovation project, here's an effort post about our smaller job renovating the guest house, or what we like to call the cabana. Our home was built around 1900-1910, but the cabana was added in the 1970s. It's about 500 square feet, one bedroom, a bathroom, changing room, and a mini-kitchen/sitting area that looks out to the back yard and the main house on the other side of the yard.

This is what it looked like when we bought it.

These pictures were insanely doctored by the realtor. The wood paneling in the big room with the bar and fireplace was green. Also the bathroom was cramped and dreary, and the drop in bathtub and toilet were lime green, much darker than the pictures show, with thick textured wallpaper. Here's what the walls really looked like.

Our plan was to make this into a functional space for guests, as our renovation project in the main house will take the least-functional bedroom and incorporate it into a master bath/closet suite, so we will not have any guest rooms for in-laws in the main house. The secondary (and more frequent) purpose is to have a fun place for friends and kids to hang out, watch football games or movies, etc. while we are enjoying the back yard. Tertiary goal was a temporary place to live with our kids while the renovations in the main house are ongoing.

So we wanted kind of an airy, beach house feel.

We acted as GC for this job which was an interesting experience with a few hiccups, but overall it went pretty well and everything took about two weeks. While the walls were being prepped and primed we got to tearing out the bathroom.

We decided to replace the vanity with a pedestal and the bathtub with a shower to make it less claustrophobic.

The tile guy was reluctant to use black grout and we could tell why, because on close inspection it shows imperfections in placement of the tiles more than white grout. But I think the effect is pretty nice. Also I kept the Despard switches (thanks corgski!) and the original heater/fan.

Meanwhile the rest of the cabana is painted. We didn't want to rip up and replace the perfectly good, if boring tile floors, so we painted them with flooring paint. It does tend to come up with lots of traffic, but it's easy to touch up and was pretty inexpensive for the effect. The ceiling fan had to have weighed 75 pounds at least. It was hanging from a 5/8 inch screw directly in the ceiling rafter. We also wanted to keep the wood paneling, which is pretty thick and solid wood, not laminate.

Those square things on either side of the fireplace are speaker cubbies...I can access them from a storage room on the other side of that wall, and there is wiring if I ever feel that need lol.

We haven't done anything with the bar besides paint it. Maybe some time down the road we can work on the bartop and sink, but it works fine for what we need now. The plan was to paint the shelves black, and then apply colorful decorative wallpaper behind them. I insisted on keeping the Coldspot beer fridge which is probably older than me but works amazingly well. So we settled on painting it to match the shelving.

The tiki cups are in storage else they'd be on the shelves too.

Eventually all the furniture and light fixtures came in and the cabana is basically finished!

I've been routinely overruled on color in favor of black/white but I think the theme, with flashes of color in the barstools, fridge, and art, captures what we were going for pretty well. Still need some real window treatments on the doors, but for now the contractor stuff works pretty well.

What causes this green color? Was the wood cut and installed while it was still green without drying it out or something?

I like the dark grout + space age switch. I don’t see any imperfections over photo at least. Not to steal any attention from your renovation, but recently I was made aware of this iconic interior of now torn down La Maison De La Celle by Jean Pierre Raynaud and I’ve been on the dark grout train ever since. Show it to your tile person if you want to give them a panic attack. :getin:

Yes, the brick was one area I was overruled. The wood is very rough textured and the labor involved in refinishing it didn't make sense. Also my designer wife wanted to keep the texture and have it seem sort of like a beach bungalow. It really looked like a camp before.

Wasabi the J posted:

I don't think this was fencing based on the cut, but I agree it was probably for exterior use. It's basically a simple 45 degree overlapping cladding, like a parallelogram in profile, maybe intended for horizontal siding.
