Like, to be extra clear, this is a take about a person who made chili for her neighbors as a nice surprise. They liked it, but the internet did not (most of the takes were that it was ableist, but apparently it was incestuous too somehow!)

Tell me that you watch incest porn exclusively without telling me you watch incest porn exclusively

Even if there's something maternal in making food for other people (which it isn't, lots of people get joy from cooking for others or doing something nice for a neighbor), the automatic jump to incest is weird as hell

Thankfully they didn't break, but they're also one of the few docs I know that refuses to socialize with other doctors

A weak state stops polluters. A strong state is able to suppress the rest of the population who would prefer clean air.

I would not bring this up if I didn't just want to post the graph below, but its not about the state but STATE CAPACITY. Which is basically the ability for a country to monopolize force, secure domestic and international economic power, create infrastructure (both physical and organizational), and to "define truths" or do symbolic power - iirc this is not explicitly "check your facts" truth but to define a truth like "America won WW2 and had no help from Russia".

Look at those four factors and consider: does China have weak state capacity?

Hell yeah! China is basically Kuwait or Malaysia!

e: I'm just gonna link this paper and the data behind it because State Capacity - as usual - seems to be just another Completely Objective Statistic that's made up of "Freedom".

Wait till you see where they pulled the data for that chart from:

The Legatum Institute was founded in 2007, funded by the Dubai-based Legatum Group under its owner Christopher Chandler, a businessman and hedge fund owner. Chandler and his brother, Richard, made their money in Russia in the 1990s/2000s and at one time had a 4% stake in the Russian state-owned company, Gazprom. The Institute is a beneficiary of his family foundation, Legatum Foundation. The foundation is registered in Bermuda and controlled by a company in the Cayman Islands.

In 2018, it was criticised by the Charity Commission for breaching its charitable objectives in publishing a partial and biased account of the benefits of free trade post-Brexit. It was closely aligned with the Vote Leave campaign giving fellowships to the campaign's chair, Gisela Stuart, and its CEO, Matthew Elliott. In 2017, it set up a "Special Trade Commission" headed by Shanker Singham, who became a prominent pro-Brexit voice across the media.

it's a close call.

Econ at least has a few observations in a fundamental sense that make sense (you can charge more for stuff that is in limited supply that people want!) and I don't know if PoliSci has any of those. It's all just backwards proofs of "Why is America the greatest country?" or "Why did people vote this way in an election, but cannot be traced back to actionable policies because we don't want to do things?"

Maybe, there's some weirdos who think China needs to be balkanized based on vague ethnic groups mostly defined by dialect or actually very small ethnic groups (FREE MANCHURIA)

There was / is a group of folks in Hong Kong that think China is going to erase Cantonese by having students take some Mandarin classes. The ability to speak Cantonese to most people in Guangdong and a fair whack of people further north not withstanding.

Or maybe they're just an idiot who thinks that there's Chinese people and Cantonese people because typically those are how the languages are described

An ocean of possibilities, mostly pointing to the person being an idiot

LTV is honestly pretty clearly and succinctly explained, and it's not "more effort = more money".

The best part is they don't even need to pick up a gross Marx book, the definition on Wikipedia gets them 90% of the way there:

The labor theory of value (LTV) is a theory of value that argues that the exchange value of a good or service is determined by the total amount of "socially necessary labor" required to produce it.
