It was common in a lot of places for the judge and lawyers to literally speak a different language from most people who'd be defendants, too. Seems common that justice systems that in theory give an opportunity for the defendant to prove their innocence end up turned into torturous spectacles.

As much as people think fantasy kings and princesses are too distant from reality to be a negative influence on kids, I think growing up with fairytale good kings and queens has indoctrinated a lot of people into reflexively defending entrenched authority. Fascists are universally terrible at governance, warfare and culture, and only success because they terrify people into dropping everything into doing what the strongman wants done NOW. And usually quickly become terrified of reporting failure so they lie through their teeth and scapegoat to avoid punishment for bearing bad news, so you end up with rapid brain drain and only toadies in most positions of power. There's a reason they lost the war very badly.
