I'm nervous this game will die super fast. Shoulda launched the F2P model on Steam alongside Bethesda launcher! At this rate, the game may not even survive to release for F2P on Steam!

Kinda sucks with this incarnation of Quake, they've forced a huge discrepancy between characters with the inclusion of abilities, because I'll play nothing but Doomguy, BJ and Ranger (Would pick Doomguy 3 times in Duel if I could). I refuse to acknowledge abilities or stats, so sure I'll lose some engagements because I can't go invis+invul out of a bad situation, when normally skill would dictate I just hosed up. The moment you allow abilities and stats to dictate who you want to play, the moment you forget who you are, the moment you become one of them, so obsessed with calculations and statistics, one of the Strogg...

I gotta find the slipgate outta this place...

Veiled shitposting in the guise of Ranger aside, I'm one of those (I guess I'm oldschool now) guys that think abilities have no place in Quake and provide far too much leniency in a duel. On the flip side of the coin, I do recognize that as a business decision it helps the game from stagnating like more pure/faithful arena shooters have come to be. I admit that new players would be scared off otherwise. Especially when there's far more attractive titles for a casual player like Overwatch.

I just don't see it as truly competitive with pushbutton abilities, I feel it robs (in particular) new players of improving themselves to the highest caliber. It's a fun game otherwise. I cannot blame anyone for picking Nyx ever, because her ability shines. I'm just whining, I suppose. Players like me are dying out and aren't the market target anymore. Gotta come to terms with that.

Ahhpple posted:

Unless you wanna play Reflex with me, then add me on steam and we can duel forever

That's one game I never really got into, but definitely should have. Proper duels! I was hoping QC would have an oldschool Duel format without abilities/stats but I'm pretty sure that's never happening. If I'm wrong let me know where that info is.

I can't believe I'm using oldschool as a modifier. I can't believe I'm now old.

There really was no point to this post other than moaning, was there?

You got me. A lot of those were fun, but still paled in comparison to the Quake giant. Reflex is a fantastic title in the current void we're experiencing, I'll give you that. I shoulda emphasized that I want it to take over the gaming world again. The tiny communities are okay (if existent at all after 6 months) but man trying to bring in new blood is a chore.

I suppose it's trivial to make an arena game that's fun, compared to the monumental task of it catching on to the "GAMING POPULACE"

Bots would absolutely help new players in an intensely competitive arena like duel.

Bear in mind a vast majority of competitive games out there are team based now, and don't offer duel situations. It's incredibly intimidating. I found bots helped a lot when I got into quake dueling way back.

You also have to consider that most players simply aren't as willing to go through the unforgiving rigors of dueling these days. It's punishing, puts all the pressure on yourself, and requires a great deal of determination to keep going and improve, turning crushing losses into close losses into wins. It requires a very specific mindset. I totally understand why duel's going out of style.

Lots of newer players just aren't as bullheaded as us, man. Lots of players in general just don't thrive in that cutthroat, ruthless, punishing environment anymore. S'not a bad thing.

That makes sense. What do you think about the unranked modes having the hidden mmr though? Should we keep that or drop it?

An argument for keeping it is that you won't run into wild stomps on either side with such a mixed bag, even though that's pretty much how oldschool FFA was done forever, it can be a turnoff for people expecting even matches. Removing it could be problematic for the casual class of players if there's a full group of really good players who just want to stomp people and play easy games. While this was only marginally harder to do in a time when groups weren't a thing (you just gave your friends the server name or IP), it would be easier now since getting into a game with a group is very streamlined.

An argument for removing hidden mmr from unranked modes is that it's more of a mixed, varied bag, and while it can potentially be a landslide either way, I personally feel far more engaged if I don't keep running into the same people in unranked games. Hidden MMR is basically just secret matchmaking in most games today, and I personally hate its existence and given the choice between the two, I feel just as much pressure as ranked, so I'd rather play that if unranked had hidden MMR too. It also makes playing with friends a lot harder than if you just jump into a game with people dogpiling in, and I always hate the knowledge that I'm dragging my friends into a game that's guaranteed to be incredibly hard for them.

While personally I hate hidden mmr, I feel I wouldn't be doing my duty as an old guard competitive veteran if I didn't play devil's advocate. I won't pretend to know the best choice for everyone, but I will share my views for and against.

Aside from my obvious Doom series bias, Doomguy's jumping is great for utility. I don't really play other champions much, but Sorlag is pretty solid as long as you don't overextend a ton and get your big ol hitbox blasted.

They've done a lot of infrastructure improvements (that I'm sure were not easy to make) since alpha and beta. The differences are astounding.

Playing it now makes me regret not getting serious into Quake in its heyday. Couldn't even tell you why, really, suppose I just had my attention diverted outside of the odd impulse to CTF, FFA or CA. Too many games during the golden period of FPS.

It's cool seeing how much fun people have in the ranked modes, though. Now that's the tough stuff. It looks appealing.

You know where FPS games are at currently, right? They had to change the formula or it'd be dead on arrival. No one's gonna sell a game on the old cutthroat formula anymore. It's too unforgiving for the general market.

Arena FPS are just not marketable anymore. The time for cutthroat Shooties 'n' Zoomies is long past.

Although I'd argue they really dropped the ball at critical moments for marketing QC, Reflex enjoyed a brief stint of popularity in the void between AFPS, but that's not a title that had any sort of marketing power behind it, so it was always destined to fade away, unfortunately.

So what’s the general strategy for ctf? anarki for capping, eisen for defense, sorlag for chasing and something else I don’t know.

Since the maps are absolutely massive sometimes it's best to defend at mid so you can respawn back at base for another confrontation instead of being completely outmaneuvered because offense champions are gonna outrun you instantly.

There's very few chokepoints so it's tough to defend, and a flagrunners dream.

Force a standoff if someone takes your flag behind you, that way you don't simply get mulched when the runner and escort come through and they got a free run.

General, simple rules I keep in mind that have been successful until I run into a premade 4 stack of good people.

Slash and Sorlag are really good on offense too if you know how to move with them. I haven't seen anyone play Athena on offense for some reason, I guess when you use your ability you drop the flag automagically?

e: Be mindful of where your teammates are at all times, it's tough to practice but once you get it, it's second nature and you don't NEED voice comms to deduce where enemies are at. The outline through walls is so insanely helpful, I wish I had it in older CTF games.
