In the previous closed beta weekend (the last before the NDA died) they unlocked all the characters for everyone, then kept that for those people when they did the wipe. So if you had a beta key previously, there you go.

New Dev Q&A Answers

Some of the hot points summarized:
  • Immediate work is being put into performance, netcode and stability, with further-out work relating to more tutorials, training maps, UI/UX improvements and "progress loops" to keep players coming back every week.
  • Clutch will be getting a new passive (hydralic dodge) and a second-stage to his active (Plasma Mining Drill) to give him a little more mobility and power.
  • Hitboxes, for the most part, are lower-poly versions of the character's base, un-customized model, with some extra thickness or filling in where balance demands.
  • Speedometer coming soon, along with training maps and other such tools.
  • Super Nailgun getting a buff to match the stats of the QL Plasma Gun.
  • Replay system is in development alongside other spectator tools like a minimap.
  • Steam version confirmed, but will still use a Bethesda.net login. The only advantage is that you won't have to use their terrible launcher, but that's a pretty big advantage.

Quake Champions Enters Steam Early Access on the 22nd. The Early Access "Champion's Pack" will be $30 and include permanent unlocks of all champions (including all future ones), an exclusive Ranger skin, and three Reliquaries. The free-to-play version of the game will be released later, but if you have a beta key you can keep playing for free via the awful Bethesda launcher just fine.

The Early Access release will add two new maps, Rune Challenges found in backpacks, a weird "lore item" system that basically gives you a chance at a special skin if you smash up vases, better tutorial stuff, in-game voice chat... oh, and the return of an old friend.

To explain for H13: when you hold down the zoom button (Right Mouse by default) with the Railgun, you'll see a bar circling the crosshair fill up. When it's full the shot does 10hp more damage. Which is nice if you have the time.

I went digging through the soundbanks myself, and I might as well add onto this:

1.) These files exist, but they're voiced by the placeholder announcer from the beta, so they might be quite old. There's also similarly-placeholder lines for "domains" of the gods listed as part of the rune challenges stuff ("Domain of The Black Goat" etc.) and naming the runes from Quake 1 ("Rune of Elder Magic" etc.)... these may be abandoned ideas. Or they may be for a future game mode. YMMV.

2.) There's sets of finished-sounding voiceovers and ability sounds for Athena, Keel, Strogg Infiltrator and Death Knight, so odds are they're next on the table.

I really hope QC gets more maps and fixes the netcode issues soon though, it's pretty fun. Makes me wonder why the new UT game has been in limbo for so long, I feel like it's been in the same mostly-complete state that QC currently is since last year. Maybe more, because I can't ever remember having any problems with the netcode when I played it. It was super-solid all around and I really liked that they put out maps quickly by releasing them as un-textured forms ASAP.
The New UT was started as a glorified ad for Unreal 4 licensing and as such only has a skeleton crew on it (because hey, the community will make stuff for you, right?). Epic's interest is centred far more heavily on Fortnite and that one third person MOBA nobody plays. And engine licensing, of course.

Transcript/summary of the AMA livestream.

Some of the key points (but not all of them):

  • Patch coming out hopefully next week with bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Hitboxes are being changed from an animated mesh wrapped around the player model to a static mesh for each animation state (jumping etc.), reducing lag/desynch and making hitboxes more forgiving
  • Next update will move rocket explosions from client to server auth, fixing a cause of 0-damage rockets.
  • Big October Update will fix the bug with railgun trails drawing late if you fire and move your aim in the same frame
  • Future maps and modes will be free, to avoid splitting the community
  • Big October Update will restrict certain cvars to maintain a level playing field
  • Ranked Play coming during Early Access. I think they're targeting sometime this year?
  • Clutch's mining drill "hasn't been successful", will probably be either tweaked or replaced. Will add sensitivity slider for the dodge double-tap.
  • Sorlag's spit will likely be given a longer delay before she can fire again.
  • LG will be changed from "firing invisible projectiles" to how it worked in previous games.
  • Doom Slayer's berserk reliability has been improved, will hopefully be released in the Big October Update.

A new minor patch is out, fixing a couple of bugs and removing lore spawning from Duels.

Also: If you were wondering what the team behind the new Unreal Tournament was doing all this time, apparently the answer was "shoehorning a shameless PUBG clone into Fortnite". So... there you go.

There was a developer stream where they announced a bunch of stuff.

Coming in December:
  • Ranked play, starting with Duels
  • Teammate outlines
  • More sliders to adjust music volume in different situations (endgame, ingame etc.)
  • 40+ options for custom crosshairs
  • Little thirdperson animations upon first spawn (or spawning after changing champ). Won't be vulnerable until you enter first-person view.
  • New champion!
  • New duel map, "Veil of Pnath" that uses the same visual theme as Lockbox.
  • Health stacks all getting increased + more potential armor pickups, to lengthen time-to-kill and emphasise map control
  • More lenient hitboxes
  • Anarki's max speed will be cut down slightly when moving normally, but can reach max speed when injecting
  • Doom Slayer's berserk lockup range is reduced
  • BJ getting a higher rate of fire
  • Gauntlet range reduced by 25%, "fires" less frequently
  • LG more reliable, without wriggling exploit
  • FPS-dependant firing rates fixed
  • Selected starting weapon will be saved for future matches
  • Data center choice will be saved

Coming in later updates:
  • 2v2 ranked modes
  • Instagib!
  • Prototyping other types of duels - 1 champ, 3 champs, life limits etc.
  • Want to change lore system to an endgame reward. Still want the pots to do something though...
  • Revamp of runes system for better rewards and less lovely challenges
  • Removing "blanket-type" hitboxes for a more flexible system.
  • Tribolt getting "rounded out" as an area-of-denial weapon
  • CTF is an important goal for 2018, currently being prototyped and maps being built

They did a dev chat stream the other night about some of the stuff they're working on. To summarize:

  • More champ balance tweaking in the works - they want to bring the stats closer together so the abilities are the main difference between characters rather than starting health or whatever.
  • Character rental will be replaced with the ability to just outright buy characters permanently using the free currency, along with a LoL-style "free champion of the week".
  • Levelling up will be made a lot faster, and hopefully there'll be less item duplicates.
  • AI bots are in the works, and will be released in phases. Phase 1 will be able to play DM, TDM and Instagib reasonably competently, but they won't know how to use abilities. Once all the phases are done, offline play might be possible.
  • Tribolt changes in the works, changing from "explodes a short time after hitting something" to "explodes a short time after being fired", so you can pop people with mid air explosions once you get the timing/distance down.
  • Anti-cheat has been silently collecting data since last summer, bans are just now starting.
  • Teammate healthbars are coming.
  • A nice new death screen is coming, focusing the camera on your killer and telling you things about them like their remaining health.
  • Aaaaand a ridiculous new gore system is coming to replace the current Flesh Rugs.

1. Will this game be playable offline/with bots?

2. What is the pricing model? Steam has it for 5 bucks with dlc; is it pay to win? Also would I be able to just buy a full version?
1.) Bots are coming. They'll be released in "phases", with the first phase (can play deathmatch and TDM good, but doesn't know what abilities are) coming soon. Once all the phases are complete, they'll start thinking about an offline mode, but not until then.

2.) As of the next patch, the game will use a League of Legends-style F2P system where you start with one character (Ranger), there's a free character-of-the-whatever on rotation, and you can get the rest over time by spending Favor earned by playing. Or real money, if that's what gets your rocks off.

The $5 version lets you into the F2P version early with an extra character (Scalebearer), a limited trial of all the others and some cosmetic poo poo. The $30 version is the "just buy the drat game" version that gives you all the characters past and future, along with the ability to start Custom Games and some other cosmetic poo poo.
