Just a question out of curiosity- what is it like flying a plane with one of those big sign banners behind it, if someone here has experience flying one? How do they get the banner in the air? Does it have wheels and you tow it horizontally on the runway until you take off?

That is an appallingly bad plan.

Ethiopian Airlines is the most reputable and well regarded airline in Africa and not too shabby on the world stage either. Two all-lives-lost, apparently nearly-identical incidents in a few months, with an airframe that was brand new, should get your hackles up whether they're "third world" or not.

I've always thought it'd be cool as hell to live in a world in which airlines launch some wide-ranging artist collaboration kind of program where every aircraft has a unique artist-designed paintjob/livery. It'd be completely impractical, of course, and I imagine painting planes is not cheap, but it'd give a lot of identity to a form of travel which is usually seen as very boring and sterile.

I figured this was probably the best thread to ask this. At what altitude does the sky at zenith become black during daytime? My experience from airliners at cruise altitude- from cabin seating- is that although the sky directly overhead is a dark blue, it’s still blue. At what point does that become black, and at what point are the stars visible during the daytime? I’d guess that’s probably around 60,000 feet so I expect the number of people with personal experience is very limited, but I’m curious if anyone knows or has heard around what altitude this occurs.

This report went up in the LA Times today, regarding "fume events" on airliners. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of the folks here with experience in airliners and commercial aviation. (Also, you can laugh at the unnecessarily dramatic gif zooming in on text.)

Beef Of Ages posted:Things are just dandy all over. Don’t know how much this is related, but Southwest cancelled 70% of their flights yesterday, 60% today, and are only running a third of their schedule until they’re “back up to speed”. https://twitter.com/stevechenevey/status/1607708697467228163?s=21 https://twitter.com/ap/status/1607738225593917441?s=21 I got an email this morning that my flight on Thursday was cancelled, and after finding it impossible to find an alternate flight with Southwest I just booked on American instead.
