Maybe I'm naive, but I assume most conservative parties in other countries are nowhere near as evil as the GOP, and are basically in favor of being a little less generous but still wanting people to be cared for at some level. Our conservative party is run by a cartoonishly evil brotherhood of supervillains. I imagine people in other countries are confused and horrified for our sake.

Its been a while since we've seen an "ICE is evil" story. Undocumented married mother of two had a misdemeanor for driving without a license many years ago, been here since 2008. She was picked up by ICE and scheduled for deportation based on criminal history. The governor went "ok, gently caress you, I'll pardon her." and ICE was like "lol too late she now has a final order to deport, her criminal history no longer matters!" https://twitter.com/elisefoley/status/867504708470034432

When the eastern edge of your state is over 300 miles away from the ocean, mountains no longer matter. You aren't a loving "east coast state". I'm reluctant to even let Vermont and Pennsylvania claim membership in that group.

This really is an amazing graph. The only reason why the black and blue line didn't hit near-zero is because of lovely red states who didn't want to accept the black president's health care. They'd rather die early with their southern pride. https://twitter.com/mattmfm/status/867488736602411008

huh, just got home and over 300 posts in an hour. I wonder what happ...... Oh good lord. Gianforte, you are so God drat stupid its unbelievable. Good news: this should matter and we might reasonably hope that Quist can win. Bad news: The GOP won't take this as a sign. Of course Gianforte lost, he assaulted a reporter the day before an election, duh. Its unfortunate, but we'll beat Ossof and MAGA.

yeah, everyone knows whats going on with Fox. They are burning Gianforte now so that they can explain to their audience that the crazyman who committed a felony in front of 3 and a half witnesses the night before the election did not lose because of Trump or health care.

Spiffster posted:I'm sorry but after Trump freaking won any logic has been thrown out the window. I will bet on chaos every time until I'm shown otherwise next November The big difference is that Quist is well-known and liked in Montana. The voters are conflicted because the right-leaning voters are going "he's a nice enough guy and cool musician, but a little too naive and idealistic, I'm afraid we need a good strong republican". Hillary was loving hated, A literal felony the night before an election is going to push voters towards the guy they kinda non-politically liked as a person anyway.

At this point, with the audio and the report from witnesses (including Fox), I will confidently say that even if Gianforte wins tomorrow, the house will not seat him. MT-AL will either be Quist or another special election.

Smol posted:I think I read in NYT that apparently usually over half of Montana votes early. So if Gianforte had a good lead, him losing votes today might not be enough. except this race was going to be close before the criminal assault. If this was a typical hellhole with a good GOP candidate and a typical dem it may be lost, but we already had a terrific dem, a horrible republican, and a race that was going to be close. The election day voters are going to be strongly tilted towards quist and they wont have much ground to make up because it was supposed to be close anyway

Eltoasto posted:Apologies if it has been discussed, but would this monstrosity pass SCOTUS? Honestly, I'm not sure. I could see it going either way at the high court. Usually the feds can only charge you with a crime for this sort of thing if you attack a federal agent, like the FBI or a marshal. If you attack a local sworn officer, the feds have no jurisdiction its a state or local crime. What congress is trying to do is argue that since they give grant money to that police department, even though they are not federal agents they have an interest in that cop's safety so if you attack them its now a federal crime, too. I don't know if that holds up or not. Its a poo poo law either way, obviously. Its a necessary step to creating a national fascist state where the cops no longer have to worry too much about what happens if they beat the hell out of a random citizen, as long as they were arguably doing something illegal, its all good get out that club and swing away..

Breaking: 4th circuit upholds the injunction against the muslim ban edit: basically agreed with the lower court judge who said that yeah, the travel ban is not discriminatory against muslims on its face, but all you have to do is open your eyes and ears, listen to what Trump said in the campaign, and its obvious that its a muslim ban.
