Really seems like besides a few exceptions, you're better off taking a second Expert Path than going through with a Master Path.

Coolness Averted posted:I haven't crunched stuff enough to see that and haven't played a game yet so can't comment there, but I do sometimes worry when a book's examples of character building/leveling up and paths is always described from story perspective/narrative. This is a hack and slash game, not FATE or Dungeon World I want a solid and balanced engine for killing things and taking their stuff. Really it comes down to the fact the crunch is tight, so as long as you're paying a minimum of attention to where your strengths (combat options) lie your character is going to be viable regardless of path combination.* But on the same vein this means that Paths which expand your options are going to be more engaging and fun unless you're truly aiming for a very narrow theme/gimmick. For example, all the magic Master Paths face veeery stiff competition from Sorcerer - assuming it wasn't already your Expert Path. And then you've got poo poo like Transmuter which offers the most boring loving thing, flat stat bonuses, but +3 to your combat stat is reaaally loving good. *Magic is really the only part where you have to be truly mindful of your choices, due to the limits on castings and needing to buy into traditions first before being able to access higher level spells.

Nothing stops Priest from using Prayer on themselves for their attacks, either. It would waste their level 8 ability, but by then they should have other sources of bonuses so it's alright to switch.

Will need to get people more in the mind set of min maxing. Accuracy is bound to d20+-d6, so unless you are spreading everything evenly for some reason, your swing stick stat is going to get at least a +3 over the course of your career. That's pretty significant.

Goblins can do Agility 19 through much the same process, and Humans 18 on any attribute they want. Though, Strength is the worse attribute to do this on, even if it can get the highest, as Agility at least can be used for Defense (Humans and Goblins can get an easy 23 with Arcane Armor).

Soft Leather clothing is AGI+1 Defense, stacks with Arcane Armor just fine. Large Shield is +2 to Size 1, Small Shield is +1. 12 Agility +1 Novice 1 +1 Expert 3 +1 Master 7 = 15 +2 Transmuter 7 (optimization) +1 Transmuter 10 = 18 +1 Soft Leather +2 Arcane Armor +2 Large Shield = 23 Goblins get +1 Agility compared to Humans but can't use Large Shields, so they get 23 as well. Jack B Nimble posted:So many of the advanced classes give you magical traditions, but a magician can pick any tradition when leveling? I was going to limit my player to choices they were able find in game (while of course allowing them to seek our whatever, I just want some in game basis for it) but I'm curious about the mechanics/rules as written. Even though some classes are based around a certain tradition, that's not meant to be the only way to gain those traditions? There's nothing that's "off limits" when making your magician picks? Nope, nothing. Same for Rogues and their 'Magic' Roguery Talent. And for every path that doesn't explicitly force you to learn or pick a spell from a specific tradition, of which are many. Going a step further even, the Wizard Expert Path can cast spells of traditions they haven't even learned, by choosing them for their Grimoire. Jimmeeee posted:Pretty problematic from an "Orcs are inherently stronger and less intelligent" perspective. Orcs are literally a race magic-engineered into being big dumb brutes to serve as slave soldiers. If this is a problem for your personal setting then just reskin the Ancestries as was suggested earlier - let a player mechanically play a human while saying they're an orc or whatever. But for the setting as is? It's not racism if it's true. In fact, it's intentionally treated as a horrible crime on the part of the Empire and a tragedy for the Jotuns.

LGD posted:So a pretty good selection of things to build-around- I think most support reasonable niches and are worthy of consideration if you're building a character that fits into their archetype. I think Spellguard is the obvious standout from a power level perspective, since it solves many of the issues Gish builds had previously with Power progression (rogue), action economy (rogue and especially priest), and basic combat bonuses (Acolyte). Though I don't think it's so far above the curve it'd cause serious problems (i.e. it's not going totally quadratic or invalidating other character types, it just has some real nova potential). Gish Rogues have an action economy problem?

I'm personally okay with all the "edgy" poo poo being played straight. There's naturally the issue of desensitization through overload, so pacing and presentation matters, but by and large the books' various ideas are serviceable for conveying a gross, hosed up world: the Shadow of the Demon Lord is gradually turning Urth, an already rather unwholesome place, into a living nightmare.

Correct. Triggered Actions pull double duty as conditional interrupts (ie attack opportunity if an enemy pulls away from melee), and actions that you can arbitrarily choose to take on your Turn if you have the appropriate talents (Assassin lets you use your Triggered Action to Hide or Retreat during your turn).
