Crosby's flat out the best player on the ice 100% of the time that he's out there. Was last year, still is this year, if the Penguins win the Cup he ought to get the Smythe again. But I doubt he will unless he finishes way ahead of the field on points, it's not just a hockey thing, award voters in all sports don't like giving an award to the same guy they gave it to last year.

fakeedit: The entire list of back-to-back Conn Smythe winners is: Bernie Parent and Mario Lemieux. Even Gretzky only got it in 2 of his 4 Cup years, Messier and a guy on the losing team got the other 2. When the Islanders won 4 straight Cups they gave the Smythe to 4 different dudes.
I mean, we haven't had back to back champions since 97-98 and it's not like a bunch of guys got screwed out of it. Even Gretzky isn't a great example since he never repeated as a Cup winner after winning the Smythe. Also they gave him the Hart 9 times in 10 years so I don't think they were too against giving him the same award a bunch of times in a row. I don't think anything with the Islanders and Canadiens really comes out to them getting voter fatigue.

Uh, I'm not saying the Preds have a Crosby or Malkin, but I don't think think you can say the Preds don't have skilled players. They aren't the ducks either where they are a grinding team.

Honestly, what's interesting about this will def be Pittsburgh offense vs Nashville defense. Which will drive the game better?

It was just the lesser of two evils. Keep the pens as far away from a repeat as possible.

I was gonna counter this with the defunct Pittsburgh Pirates but goddammit they were a year later. :(

Edit: On the other hand those have been the colors of the Pittsburgh flag for like a million, so

Probably the part where they got out shot almost every game during round 1 and 2 and somehow MAF stole two series, and anybody who wants to pretend that wasn't improbable can gently caress right off because I know as soon as MAF took the ice for game one against the Blue Jackets half this forum was excitedly readying up their beachball.gifs, jokes about wilting in the spring, and whatever other MAF lowlights they could find.

In the NASCAR threads, we used to joke about the lucky horseshoe rammed up Jimmie Johnson's rear end (based off Kevin Harvick making the reference in an interview). No matter what the hell he did in a race/during the season (and there were a couple years where he was mediocre despite the record book), he'd still find a way to win a race/catch fire in the Chase and win a championship to the annoyance of everyone who'd grown tired of him.

I knew anybody in the path of the Pens was in trouble once MAF showed the first couple games against the Jackets weren't a fluke, so long as he didn't implode. He wasn't terribly impressive in the two games played in Columbus, but the Pens still won one of them.

When he did finally regress to the mean for good, it happened at a time in which an even better goalie was ready to go. The D was downright awful at times, yet the embarrassment of riches that are Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, the talented supporting cast (Horny/Guentzel/Bonino/Rust/Hagelin, etc.), and the two-headed monster of Good MAF and Murray got them to the ECF anyway in spite of trying to blow a 3-1 lead.

It's either a golden horseshoe or a really god drat good hockey team which found a way to get to the SCF almost in spite of itself. Maybe a little of both. The end result is impressive.

Yeah my brother actually hopes they lose because he hates Penguins fans because they ruined cheering the Pens by being entitled and hipsters, same for the Steelers.

He'll just gladly stay being a hardcore Pirates fan who loves the game of baseball and doesn't care about the Pirates never winning anything of relevance; that and he hates that my Pirates fandom often involves me ranting about Mussolining Bob Nutting and his bloodline.

Yeah, I got nothing against the actual city of Pittsburgh. Phipps Conservatory is cool as hell and there's a really good brewpub inside an old church. I just don't like their sports teams.
