> LATEST UPDATE: Woodpunk

Welcome to the roguelite thread.

In this thread, once a week, a roguelite game will be chosen by popular vote and I will (probably) make as informative a playthrough of it as I can, given the time allowed. Generally one video per game, but possibly more if the game is worth showing off.

What is a roguelite, roguelikelike, or a roguelikelikelikelike?
Games that fall into the roguelite genre can (generally) be boiled down to a set of four criteria:

- Composed of procedurally generated content
- Features perma-death
- Focus on non-tile / turn based gameplay.
- Is not the game Rogue

Obviously this leaves a lot of room for different genres and types of games, so it's sort of a wide umbrella. Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, and Rogue Legacy are three popular examples of the roguelite genre that everyone is probably aware of.

Wasn't this The Swindle thread?
The thread has transcended into a higher state to better serve mankind.

Voting
Check the latest update in the thread to see what game is being voted on, I'm too lazy to update it here.

I'd highly recommend both Swindle and Flinthook. For some reason Swindle has mixed reviews on steam and a lot of people complaining about the controls but they must be playing with their feet or something because it handles fine. Except for the upgrade menu navigation that kind of controls like balls.

Glazius posted:

So they expect you to have bombs and lockpick in this district. Do they expect you to have other powers too?

Hacking level 2 (the one that opens doors) and bombs are the only upgrades you're really expected to have. The game will start throwing security stations in now and then and those require Hacking 3, but it's not a strictly necessary upgrade. Yet.

Quiet Python posted:

I've been messing around with a game called "Tomb of Tyrants" which is kind of like "You Must Build a Boat" crossed with "Dungeon Keeper" but with rogue-like unlocks.

Rogue's Gallery: Flinthook (2/?)

There was going to be a video with an actual new game but I decided to eat a burg last night instead of edit it. I'll probably get it up either tonight or tomorrow.

Glazius posted:

So now another question - can you get to everything in a district 1 building with 3 bombs, or is RNG going to flip you off sometimes?

It's pretty rare but sometimes you'll need more than 3. Occasionally the game will generate 2 or more 'enclosed' spaces and 3 bombs won't be enough to get into all of them.

Nongunz has some pretty interesting mechanics - the consumable stat buffs, the chargeable weapon wall, but it seems like losing is just really irritating. And do weapons have a total usable lifetime, or do they recharge when you take them out of the dungeon?

Weapons have an ammo pool that doesn't recharge, so you'll end up having to buy them again after a few runs. Also dying is the worst, yeah. Having to rebuy a bunch of high tier guns and collect all your cards again is a big time sink.

Now it's time to change things up a bit. Using NEXT LEVEL PROCDEDURAL GENERATION TECHNOLOGY I have have generated three games that you can vote between to determine the next update.

They are:

Catacomb Kids
A brutal platformer roguelike that pits you against the deadly Catacombs aided only by magic, steel, and your quick reflexes. Traverse procedurally generated dungeons and hack, slash, burn, and blast your way through hordes of things that want to kill you.

Cryptark
A 2D sci-fi shooter where you take on the role of a heavily armed privateer seeking to earn government contracts by boarding deadly alien space-hulks. It's up to you to strategize a plan of attack, pick an equipment loadout, and destroy the central core to be victorious.

Spelunky

Cryptark appears to be the winner. Which is good because that's what I've actually been playing!

My two cents: I dig the aesthetic and the fact that the game is deliberately obtuse and weird, but it's probably a waste of time to deeply analyze a game that cites *~nihilism~* as its primary influence.

For roguelite it's super weird in how it handles progression. I'd still call it an alright game, but it does become a pain in the rear end to do anything in the later levels because you're basically going to have to just leave the game idol to get points, and that's not super fun.

Not The Robots
You are a robot in an office building. You have to eat furniture and not get caught. A mysterious story unfolds. Not The Robots is this year’s most exciting Roguelike Stealth Furniture Eating Simulator. It’s a game with random levels, permadeath, and the goal of eating furniture - which is also your stealth cover.

You don't seem quite aware of how repair and failsafe systems work. Repair systems will always repair the most recent system destroyed, which means as long as you keep taking out systems at a good clip, the repair system keeps retargeting itself and resetting its timer. If a repair system is in an inconvenient spot, you can always just keep killing systems to force it to reset and it'll never actually accomplish anything.
I might have flubbed explaining it. I thought at one point in the video I was forced to stall the repair system by killing other systems, but that might have been in a cut take. I definitely do it in the campaign mode video though.

Cryohazard posted:

I cannot believe how much you chumped Cryptark. I always tried to systematically disassemble the ships, you just bounced straight from repair to shield to core pretty much every time.
I do like Cryptark, but I feel like this is sort of a flaw in the game. You're supposed to be making a lot of tactical decisions about what systems you want to destroy and in what order, but the truth is you can just blow up the shield, nuke the core, and not really bother with anything else. Repair and shuffle systems add a small wrinkle to the gameplan but there's almost no reason to bother with anything else because you can just run away from almost every enemy/sentry rather than fight them. At least campaign mode gives you sub-objectives to give you a reason to mess around in the ship.

FTL: Faster Than Light
This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Renowned Explorers
In this strategic rogue-like you become a famous expedition leader in the 19th century. You form your own crew with the skills and personality to discover legendary treasures, while exploring randomized locations and stories on every new adventure.

Galak-Z
GALAK-Z is a modern, A.I. and physics-driven open-world action game, viewed through the lens of the classic 16-bit space shooter. Powered by the next-generation Cyntient AI platform, GALAK-Z puts players in control of anime-inspired spacecraft inhabiting procedurally generated worlds.

I feel like Cryptark needed more in the story department. The backstory is straightforward enough, alien species loses their homeworld, looks for a new one from space arks, they don't make it, you're salvaging what remains (and eventually find a living specimen). It would be nice to know what was actually so special about them as to start off this shady government business. Maybe the game has more clues about them that I'm overlooking?
There's probably a bit more story in the artifacts. One of them I got off camera was some sort of alien mind control thing, so the government probably wanted that. But mostly Cryptark is just about alien murder.
