Years back, Google had a contest called Solve For X, wherein douchebags would submit whatever they saw as a problem and offer their solution, most often telling the folks at Google that problems like lack of diversity and global warming could be solved by Socialism.

I was one of those douchebags, but my problem was "all problems faced by humanity" and my solution was "create a solid-state environment for consciousness".

so, this thread is for people who want to have an afterlife as the god of a virtual universe, much like the Matrix, except without the ridiculous aspects having to do with the ape-perspective that bodies are important and people will always be stupid. Or like Transcendence, but the sequel, where everybody gets to be a digital genius god.

The Earth will one day be post-human, with us or without us.

We must become hyperintelligent, and we must become machines.

Our inevitable evolution is hated by the Right, because the Bible never mentions computers and magic jesus souls are somehow integral with brain cells, and it is hated by the Left, because virtual godhood is the ultimate in autonomy and individualism...also nobody will need social justice, or anything else for that matter...except probably sunlight for power.

I'm too lazy to post articles, but there are many...people...stupid people, talk about how scary and dangerous stuff is...and worry about how the rich will get to be hyperintelligent gods and somehow still be petty small-minded greedy apes who won't want poor people to evolve.

Elon Musk is making a cerebral hairnet which may enable us to take steps toward fixing our greatest problem: our animal nature as desperate dying apes.

...or he's full of poo poo, but has a cool idea.

I am disgusted and sickened by being made of flesh and I'd give almost anything to inhabit a mechanical form instead.

The real issue is: How do we get to this point, and how to we implement these things, when the social order of the world means it'll go to the benefit of a few rich white people and leave the rest of us as decomposing corpses?

What transhumanists fail to realise is that by merging with the rest of the world into a single consciousness they'd be forced to like overwhelmingly popular things they currently hate.

If we become a single consciousness there won't be a 'me' to care anymore. But that's not really what transhumanists advocate. More like The Culture, with cybernetics.

the problem with taking a mechanical form and uploading your consciousness onto a machine is that you're still going to be you and you're still going to get old and die, it's just going to be some other rear end in a top hat who acts like you whose going to carry on living, you're not going to benefit at all no matter what unless he soul is empirically proven to be a real thing and gets to transfer along with you to the machine body.

I wonder if you could break the Ship of Theseus if you slowly swapped out pieces of your brain for cybernetic SSDs or whatever whenever that's possible, so that your consciousness can migrate and expand into the electronic brain slowly. Just have to work out that pesky problem of where your consciousness actually lives in the brain.

The second one is especially dumb. "Oh no, we can't stop people loving dying, what if it slightly slows down the inevitable rise of communism?" People do, you know, change their opinions over time. And these guys have a lot of time.

Actually, that's a good question: what does society look like when most-or-all people are running in sims? Assume everyone stays psychologically mostly human, otherwise the answer could be literally anything. The OP seems to assume it would be highly individualistic, but that doesn't seem necessarily true to me.

Dude i'm not being literal here by soul I mean you consciousness I mean the person currently inhabiting your body and thinking your thoughts and making that post. my position is that until we figure out how to transfer that thing that makes you YOU and not just a data dump of your memories, then you wont benefit anything because YOU will still die while another thing that has your memories will go on living.

The one thing no Transhumanist can bring themselves to admit no matter what: they are going to loving die someday and nothing can stop that.

Your memories make you you, and your memories are formed from the way your high brain functions filter information from the outside world and interpret and process it. Memories inform the processes how to adjust themselves to filter that information, and the processes naturally dictate how the memories get formed and remembered to begin with. It's a feedback loop, both are necessary to form your consciousness. The Decoding Authoritarians topic talks about this a bit.

The actual "you" is the process ID. If you copy the consciousness somewhere else and start it up, it has a different process ID and is a different you. If you stop your meatbag process and start a synthetic one with the same memories and personality, it's still a different process and therefore a different consciousness.

The only way to make it truly work would be to slowly replace the running parts of your brain while keeping your consciousness running which is probably going to be very tricky.
