hiroshi yoshimura has been making ambient music since the early 80s and has a cool discography, this is from his 1986 album "green" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcXqYrxvJ64

i know it says one track but here's another one that's lovely https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybu9hKqWt6c
this reminds me of wendy carlos's masterpiece sonic seasonings, which apparently is not on youtube (not that youtube's audio quality would have remotely done it justice)

I always side with the music I like not as "old music was better in general" but it was good bc it was "pioneering and came first, but also sounded great". Ive liked vangelis kraftwerk and tangerine long time, but new music I like just as much bc it pushes what's been built further and has the ability to incorporate more, but also it arrives at my ears first bc of my age. By techno I meant that can include 90s techno so thank you. But also, if I only listen to old music, how can my taste be sustainable?
most good music is "old" by virtue of most music being "old". this is true of everything.

ed: what i'm saying is that the idea of listening to music made before this year not being "sustainable" is laughable. you will never run out of good music no matter what year it's from.

but with popular electronic music specifically (not being a snob, i linked a prodigy track for crying out loud) it seems like people just forgot around the turn of the century that you could make sounds with a synthesizer that are actually interesting. holy poo poo does modern "edm" sound like poop compared to literally almost anything from the '90s.

Agreed. I think that it's a combination. Older works tend to have more of a purity in it's experimentation, but newer ones take what works before and either improves or relies on. For any artistic medium it's about finding a middle ground.
your idea of a "middle ground" between the past and the present is artificial. it's a completely arbitrary distinction unless you're talking about music made the exact instant you're thinking about it (i.e. unless you're a jazz performer). everything today will be 50 years old five decades from now, everything already made once had yet to exist.

Well yeah I mean if we're talking about literally all art created forever. Granted, I was being very general, but I'd like to think that we're referring to what's relevent now. It's not as though electronic is a classic genre. But otherwise, yeah sure, what will exist decades from now will be completely different and likely be called something else, if I understand you correctly.
