I'd like to talk to some cool and chill goons and televised programming is pretty great so let's talk TV, shall we? I love TV! Particularly comedies and cartoons for the most part, although I've been known to enjoy a variety of other programming from food to documentaries to crime thrillers to science fiction. Although I can be picky, I like to think that I can always respect effort and quality. There's a certain respect that I have for really good television shows- the way I see it, there are lot of restrictions when it comes to putting together a TV show episode compared to writing and producing a movie, and that makes it all the more impressive when it comes together despite the time and budgetary constraints. Every single thing has to happen for a good reason, or else it's just a waste of money, bearing in mind that your average viewer probably isn't going to appreciate the little subtleties because turning on a television and glancing at the screen is a little different than paying to see or sitting down and watching a legitimate film. To me, this makes television like 30 Rock, The Office, Extras, or Arrested Development not just written but crafted. There are some jokes in Arrested Development that viewers won't even get unless they've seen future episodes! That's expecting a lot out of the typical watcher! Not all shows are perfect, but some of them have got some drat good elements in them or at least remain a consistently good quality for extended periods of time. Ever paid attention to the set direction in Workaholics? It's actually really impressive. Cartoons are a personal favorite of mine too, and have been for as long as I can remember. People can cry "man child" all they want, but cartoons are made by adults too, so it blows my mind when the little subversive details are overlooked. Those 90's Warner Bros cartoons are a clusterfuck of old references that no child is going to understand, both subversive and non. I don't think I even need to bring up The Rugrats. But that's enough of my Anyone else appreciate good TV too? What are you watching right now? What's your favorite TV show that you can watch over and over? What show do you think is an ongoing train wreck that should have shuffled off it's mortal coil twenty years ago? (The Simpsons) What show should EVERYONE ABSOLUTELY, MUST watch? (Community) This image will have to do since I couldn't find a loop of Heffer saying "TV". Oh, Anime is acceptable too (although not all might think so, a notion I entirely understand) but let's stick to what's at least aired on regular television outside of Japan in order to avoid a some kind of rabbit hole situation. Recently I remembered that the Cyborg 009 2001 reboot was a thing, so I've been watching that myself lately. 30 Rock is literally on right now. |

Macnult posted:I started watching Space Ghost Coast to Coast on Adult Swim's website and I can only imagine what it must've been like to watch it on television I wish I was sentient enough at the time to be able to appreciate Space Ghost when it was on. It's so wonderfully dadaist. Also, that's a fascinating take (no really) on the evolution of the cartoon's target audience vs. the actual content. These days, many cartoon creators have found that happy medium between overly subversive and juvenile, I think. Adventure Time has gotten weird, but is still mostly decent and is thankfully ending soon, and Regular Show had a pretty good run. The Amazing World of Gumball is also actually very watchable. It's more related to film, but poo poo like Minions drive me crazy because early Pixar already proved to us over and over that there's animated content that can be appreciated by all ages. Doctor Dogballs posted:I only watch anime's and pornoe's WELL YOU CAN JUST GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE. No, no I don't really mean that. Both of those things are still... technically TV. Space Ghost started in 94 and ran for ten years it would seem. There's an era of TV that I certainly miss. The old days of the Toonami Midnight Run and the very earliest instances of Adult Swim. Also, I never saw Dr. Katz but I loved Home Movies. They both do good work, but I think after the two of them split it's easy to tell that Louren Bouchard has a just a little more talent and focus. Metalocalypse is still good though. Tell me more! |

I suppose in my mind I'm not counting those adults because I've lost any hope of them producing anything of value for society! It's a moot point, I suppose. You know what I found out recently? The Sealab guys went on to do Frisky Dingo, and then the one of them is behind Archer (kinda felt like the one where they went to an actual sea lab was full of missed opportunities) now. Frisky Dingo... wasn't great, in my opinion. Tell me more! |

Plebian Parasite posted:whens the last time you saw the archer sealab episode or frisky dingo, because the sealab episode was full of references and frisky dingo was mostly pretty cool and good oh no I've been called out! I was honestly thinking later that I bet that there were references that were too subtle/I was too high to catch. I'll need to take a closer look. And I don't know. Honestly, I find Archer to really only be a B+ show in the first place (although admittedly it's only been getting better as it goes on, imo), so maybe some of those basic Archer-esque elements just didn't appeal to me when I would catch it during it's original run. Plus, it was the second or third age or so of Adult Swim originals and they generally put a bad taste in my mouth with poo poo like Squidbillies and 12oz Mouse. That's just me though. To that end, it IS a little hard for me to go back and watch Sealab. Harvey Birdman still rules though. Tell me more! |

Holy poo poo! I didn't know any of that! Thank you for making my world a more exciting place to be That has to be the #1 episode for fans. Every time I mention Sealab to someone they have to mention Murphy getting crushed by the cola machine and having to survive off of scorpion poison. Mine might have to be the one where he's looking for the pro shop that doesn't exist. Or the robots. Tell me more! |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9FocQK9L4Q Season 2 of F is for Family started 2 days ago on Netflix. It's actually pretty good, putting a distinct 70's twist on your basic cartoon family sitcom and there's a surprising amount of subtlety in the humor. Haven't caught the new season, but was very pleased with the last one. Tell me more! |

I thought early Regular Show was pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNHP5Z7RZcA Plus I hear new Samurai Jack was pretty great, and I still need to catch Craig McCracken's most recent work, Wonder Over Yonder. But hey, I mean if you're comparing poo poo to Looney Tunes and Silly Symphonies and Tex Avery then yeah it's hard to find a good comparison. DOPE FIEND KILLA G posted:sorry maybe fool is harsh, but i very much disagree! Hey hey hey, isn't it possible that I've never heard of it due to my country of origin?? I'm mainly talking about my experiences as a kid, watching good cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon like any American millennial in the 90's, and was very much disenfranchised by the terrible cartoons coming out a decade later. Camp Lazlo was bad. Code Lyoko was bad. Chowder could be funny at times but was generally sub-par. The Fairly Oddparents was very watchable as a kid but now it's like "wtf is this poo poo?". It was like this period of time where kid's cartoons were approaching subversive and watchable by adults again but not quite making it, particularly with that trend of actiony/super hero type toons like Kids Next Door, My Life as A Teenaged Robot, and yes, Danny Phantom. Like they were SO CLOSE to being timelessly good but just fell short due to generally lame writing, bad jokes, and typical plots. But I have to give credit for KND for it's *references* (they did a whole animatrix parody episode) and I personally loved the animation style for Jenny XJ9. Again though, these aren't really things that aged well for me as opposed to stuff like Rocko, Dexter's Lab, Courage, Animaniacs and basically all of it's sibling cartoons, and even SpongeBob. 12 Oz Mouse isn't a great example of Adult Swim going down hill, more like Frisky Dingo and Squidbillies. Ozmo was definitely better than those two.

pogi posted:what do you guys think about better call saul if you're into sketch comedy Mr. Show and Human Giant are awesome somewhat lesser known gems. The US version of the Office is actually very watchable out of order despite definitely having continuity so if you don't care quite as much about it's story you can just enjoy Michael Scott's antics on an episode by episode basis and piece together everything else. NewsRadio and Frasier are two of my favorite sitcoms. 30 Rock has a small continuity but it isn't super important to the show for the most part. Workaholics and Bob's Burgers are also good without an extensive story and continuity. of course if you haven't see it, I would recommend some of Loren Bouchard's best work- Home Movies. It's Always Sunny manages to stay great though up until the last like, one or two seasons which is pretty impressive. the Maureen ponderosa episodes are kinda dumb though. e: also, I'm aware Brendan worked equally on Home Movies too, and Metalocalypse is a funny show... but after seeing how consistently good and polished Bob's Burgers tends to be, I think we know who the real talent is also, it's kinda interesting to see where both of their musical sensibilities lie. Brendan was clearly the guitar guy, and Loren loves synth (I think Gene is supposed to be kind of a representation of him). Fun Fact: original concept for Metalocalypse was actually about an equally vapid and ignorant boy band e2: I can't help but wonder... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYr8Yp9w2TM "My hat is hard, but my heart is soft." I should try watching more UCB, it never really struck me the same was as Mr. Show did. Or Human Giant. HG deserved another season before Aziz Ansari had to go off and be a smug rear end in a top hat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsgQ44_uFW4 Wow, this is literally one of two actual Human Giant sketches I can find YT clips off and it's funny but not their best. never saw AoT until I watched the first episode of the second season which I enjoyed... until that unnecessarily long scene of that guy being devoured alive not a fan. I swear I was enjoying the adult swim/toonami lineup at the beginning of the year for the first time since as long as I can remember- but with Tokyo Ghoul and AoT it just feels like a gore-fest. I mean I mentioned JoJo before. and Metalocalypse is (or was? idk) a quality show. I just find the type of violence in something like AoT to be upsetting personally. what drew me to it was the more psychological aspects- there's a very clearly defined world, but still with a lot of mystique and secrets that draw you in. kinda like Dark Souls imo. what I am curious about are the dubious rumors surrounding it and whether or not they're actually true. I've had two people tell me completely different things "it's not about portraying fascism positively at all" and "lol no it totally is". probably not going to read/watch more of it but I do kinda want to know Tell me more! |
