I always like to post this article and chart when talking about coal job losses in the last 100 years or so- http://weheartwv.com/2015/06/18/this-graph-shows-the-shocking-loss-of-coal-mining-jobs-in-west-virginia/ Check that period between 1948 and ~1980, that's nearly 90k jobs gone in a 40 year period. In the almost 40 years since, you're still seeing a downward trend, but it has stabilized some. Another data point to note is the little blurb at the bottom of the article, in that the loss in jobs isn't necessarily a reduction in demand (though that did happen)- it's loving automation, and the fact that oil is the biggest competitor coal has really ever had. The fetish attraction of coal is that it's an industry with really deep pockets, and one of the few that has resisted a ton of globalization efforts. Most of your mine-heads and distribution points are still owned by the same families/conglomerates they were owned by back before the depression. There is a LOT of self-interest and a LOT of liquid assets just looking for a cozy pocket to snuggle up in. related: Most coal communities are sited in such a way to be directly adjacent to, or on top of (See: Scranton) rich seams of coal. When the mine dries up, or the company shutters their offices, you don't get a waiver on your company-furnished mortgage, so you end up with stuff like this in a lot of the places that aren't quite so remote, but don't have an interstate exit a mile from downtown: https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...f7cf_story.html Immanentized fucked around with this message at 20:38 on Jun 1, 2017 |

Capn Beeb posted:Plus the whole slavery angle that's bubbled up out of her book sure is... well, it's something alright. You're talking about the prisoners being utilized as free domestic labor in the Arkansas governor's mansion, right? E: I can't find a mainstream article covering the comment or the attending outrage but here's a write up on the beast, which was the least offensive of the first page of results. http://www.thedailybeast.com/the-lefts-latest-and-racially-misguided-swing-at-hillary-clinton

Capn Beeb posted:That's the stuff. Also happens in the Louisiana governor's mansion. Isn't that what got her in the hot water in the first place? Someone mentioned Louisiana, another person went "ah yeah, Arkansas's been doing that forever too", and like 30 seconds later turns out Hildawg had an airy slice of life about first-offense murderers make amazing domestic staff because of reasons.

In other happenings, Donnie dumbfuck won't go to places that can't guarantee the Saudi hospitality experience. Another interesting tidbit in this article is that he has a list of potential ambassadors drawn up, but hasn't formalized or really done anything with a single one of them. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/11/donald-trump-state-visit-to-britain-put-on-hold?CMP=fb_gu

They're going to use this to cut off a huge chunk of public access to any part of the legislative branch. Where Giffords tried and (largely) failed to get new legislation on the books after her shooting, the GOP is going to harp on security concerns and the intolerant left to throw another level of sneakiness on their political dealings. Kind of seeing it already, in the article below- between the "we need more security", and the "Congressmen need to be armed" is a whole lot of "we can't trust the public". https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-06-14/lawmaker-security-concerns-deepen-following-virginia-shooting

Also, I didn't see it discussed much upthread but; with Donnie admitting that he never had the Comey tapes, and then going on Fox And Friends saying that he said that to mute Comey's testimony- didn't he quite literally admit to witness tampering?

DoD officials now saying that they do, in fact have possible evidence that Syria was prepping for another chemical attack. Maybe. It sure looked like it. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/27/world/middleeast/syria-chemical-attack-trump.html
