I remember when I first lived in Dallas I actually had to take my car to a mechanic the potholes and shaken it apart so bad. I imagine it's the heat and rain that makes it so they can't use asphalt but it's hilarious when they rebuild a road, it's pouring a foot deep of rebar that takes 6 months.

The NSA guys are denying Trump ever told them to downplay or inhibit the investigation. And also taking the, "I cannot address this in a public session." The committee congressmen are pissed. I have a big feeling this, and Comey's testimony are going to be a nothingfart.

Guy live in CNN eye witness saying 50 shots fired from a semi automatic rifle at them into the field from a dude hunkered down at 3rd base BEFORE capital police began exchanging fire, then like 100 more rounds exchanged. Scalise hit in hip(?) a bunch wounded. Scalise had only made it to second base no idea if who's on first is ok.

If he is in a surgical ICU after being in the OR the news can say he is in "critical condition" all they want regardless of how chill he is in that ICU bed. He could probably be eating and watching TV waiting for a floor bed by now.

I know a thing or two about acute trauma to the pelvis. I did not know that the round he took to the hip had included his pelvis. Like, pelvis injuries are terrible. The pelvis is a cobweb of arteries and veins, the bowel and bladder floats around in there every which way, the pelvis and a leg can hold over a liter of blood each.. Repair of pelvic injuries is a huge loving deal and, as you could imagine, stopping bleeding via tamponade or "holding pressure" is nigh impossible. I took care of a dude who got shot in the rear end and the round bounced off of his pelvis every which way and just shredded everything in there. He could be in a very bad way. As well, every single day on a vent or back and forth into an OR is another day a complication or hospital acquired infection could occur. A lot of people don't appreciate that general anesthesia isn't like being asleep, your body literally thinks it is running from a lion the entire time it is being cut on. Its hard as hell on a person.

orange juche posted:Just because your conscious mind is not aware of the surgery occurring, due to being under, the rest of your body and the unconscious/involuntary functions of your mind are still very aware. Your body is excreting adrenaline and the other hormones responsible for fight or flight in response to nerves telling your brain they are being cut on. The fight or flight response is hardwired into your system, knocking you out won't stop it from occurring. This is basically it. There are Gas goons who can expound a ton more, I work mainly in ICUs. The meds that are used for general anesthesia, namely propofol, medazolam, fentanyl, they are very good at "turning you off" and making sure you are not recording memories or centrally recognizing that pain is occurring. The hardwiring of the neurons from your skin, to your spine, to your adrenal glands and blood vessels and heart and every mechanical organ are still quite awake and kicking though. As a physician cuts through your skin and opens your pelvis and starts rummaging around to cauterize and clip things that are hosed up, and run your bowel to check every centimeter for leaks... trust me your body is feeling and experiencing a lot of this. It won't remember or ever know, but the anesthesiologist sees it by spikes in your blood pressure and heart rate, increases in your respiratory rate, etc. We see the same in the ICU when a person is ventilated and in a coma but still in so much pain they are overcoming their anesthesia. It thus becomes a balance between dosing the person with more medicines to control these things, while not overdosing them to the point of cardiopulmonary collapse. Anesthesiologists have a helluva job. Surgery on anything is nuts. It is why they make patients go through pretty extensive pre-operative evaluations nowadays and even get cardiac stents placed to prevent heart attacks if need be. I doubt this guy is going to die. He will likely have a poo poo ton of morbidity from this, but he likely will live in some capacity.

Yeah there is a huge difference in dosage between propofol to knock a person out for surgery and propofol to achieve electrical silence on an EEG (we have to do this for status epilepticus sometimes). Patients definitely have working brain signals during general anesthesia, its probably just lovely and akin to a lot of static on a TV or those garbled porn channels from the 90's or something.

I don't know much about war and such but something about this before and after picture of the al-baghdadi bombing is really odd to me. https://twitter.com/CNN/status/875699517789700096 Like, how do you tactically nearly perfectly pulverize four buildings into nothingness without even hurting the surrounding trees, let alone other buildings? I see a but of roof damage on one of the nearest buildings, but the light is so different its hard to tell. But is that type of thing actually possible?

Looking at the pictures of the two ships, I mean they must've collided at a low speed right? That container ship is massive if it was going fast I'd imagine it would've destroyed the Fitzgerald.

This is a funny and creative detail but I always wondered about if a destroyer or something was going 30 knots and dropped all their anchors and they hit pay dirt if they just would slam to a stop and it's be badass. In the Fitzgerald case I think they should've fired on the incoming vessel to soften it up and decrease the damage they were about to take.
