Somewhere Parm fist pumps.

According to the Kansas City Star, free agent Jeremy Maclin "looked spry" in OTA practices and ran with the first-team offense prior to his shocking Friday night release.

Cap expert Joel Corry indicated Maclin's release may have been almost entirely salary-cap related. The Chiefs' only other high-salary, cut-able veteran was Tamba Hali, but his salary is guaranteed. "They had the most cap commitments of anyone in the league for 2018 prior to the (Maclin) move," Corry said. "They’re going to have to do something else next year. They’re not in good shape, cap-wise." The Chiefs' likeliest 2018 move for cap relief is moving on from Alex Smith.

I mean, I guess. That makes sense. I didn't realize they were that close to the cap.

Getting rid of the best receiver on the team(don't anyone say tyreek is better, he's not) pretty much means the Chiefs are in a sort of proto-rebuild/rearrange mode to get the team ready for Mahomes. Marcus Peters needs to be resigned, Tyreek too. Also getting another WR1 and DT.

Pat Mahomes is Andy Reid's last shot at winning a SB, and I think he knows it, so they're going to make the team the best possible situation for Pat Mahomes to waltz into.

This definitely signals that the team has shut the door on the Alex Smith era.

Tyreek is entering the second year of his rookie contract, he's got two more years before there's even the option to exercise and three before the deadline to re-sign him. Marcus Peters is still one and two years out, respectively, for the same. In that time, Alex Smith's contract will be up and that's a shitload of space to pay for them.

You might want to tone down the alarm bells for that one until after a couple regular season games.

With the Peters thing, wouldn't you want to pay Peters asap? If he has his 3rd straight all-pro season there's no way he won't sign for anything less than being the top paid CB in the NFL.

Also I firmly believe all the stuff about Pat being Reid's last shot to be true. Reid is nearly 60 and hasn't exactly been kind to himself health wise for the last 3 decades.

Pacman does that with literally everyone on the team. I spoke to a practice squad player back when I was recruiting that said that Pacman used to babysit his daughter. Apparently there'd be a half dozen players visiting Pacman's house every weekend.

The team is supposed to be practically clingy, same guy was on Tampa's PS prior to ours and Buffalo's and said it was actually a bit creepy, sorta cultlike.

Sure. I don't believe there's some league-wide conspiracy to keep Kaep down. Are there teams that would not sign him specifically because of his politics? Hell yes. Jets and Panthers come to mind, although the Jets have legit reasons to not bother, also. Bears, possibly. There are probably more. But if he was good enough to be a quality starter or would take less money as a back up, he'd have been signed by now. He probably will be signed by the time the season starts.

Better Living Through Birding And Pessimism

Hey don't you remember when he traded for Terrell Owens in his prime like 12 years ago?? He's doing all he can!

I'm on the verge of saying I think Ozzie Newsome is done here. I've held off on this for a while cause he's done so many great things but he's in a major rut now. The team is spinning its wheels in mediocrity and he's not really going for those top level players we need to become a contender again. It's like he drafts and signs for supporting cast and just hopes the stars will magically appear. But they won't. I think the closest thing we have to a star is Mosley. That is not gonna do it. In those old days we had those core top players to build around like Lewis and Reed. So we could get away with going for more solid guys to back them up. But you need those top guys. And we don't have em. And we're not even going for them. And this franchise is finished until that changes.

This current iteration of the Ravens has killed the team dead in its tracks. It's like a couple years ago everyone was wild about the Ravens and now I think people forget they exist a lot of the time. How can you botch that so badly.

Yeah they are and that's because they lack anyone really interesting right now because John Harbaugh made the team a dull boring idiot just like he is. Billick was kind of a fraud but at least he was an interesting personality and the team reflected that and it was fun to get behind them even if they were really flawed. Harbaugh needs to get out of here. The Ravens are like one of those Superhero franchises they always make movies about that has gotten really bad. And they need a "reboot" as the term is. Get rid of Newsome and Harbaugh, try to draft some star talent and make the team interesting again. Maybe even try to get Billick back as coach for a couple years before we find a long term option. But this current form of the Ravens has to be thrown in the trash.

They are. They mostly won due to luck and super talented teams. Harbaugh's insistence on keeping Cam Cameron as OC for years almost kept what was maybe the best team in the NFL for a couple years from getting a real shot in the Superbowl. But when Bisciotti got mad cause we lost to the Redskins and Harbaugh got rid of Cameron to appease him and the players then they played great and won. If the Ravens had beat the Redskins that day we never would have won the Superbowl. And that game wasn't even really Cameron's fault we lost. And look how we got rid of that other guy Trestman after the other Redskins loss. That's how Harbaugh is. He's all about his sycophants. He's one of the worst coaches I have ever seen.

Billick came in talking about how he knew all this poo poo about QBs and then said Kyle Boller was gonna be so good even after any fan could tell you that throwing balls from his knees meant jack. That exposed him as a fraud and began his undoing.

Newsome is primarily responsible for the Ravens' success. Those coaches were just along for the ride. But everything ends and I think it's time for Newsome to call it quits.

The move signals that they had -9.4 million to sign 35 FA's in 2018, and not enough space to sign the 2017 draft class.

I get you. Rooting for a team for me is way more than just wanting wins and a championship. I want to like the people on the team be it the players or coaches. I'm relieved Peterson is finally off the Vikings. Even if he's a HOF player I didn't like the guy and him being on the team made me care about the Vikings less.

As NFL Defenses Shrink, Look for Offenses to Go Big

quote:

Over the past few NFL seasons, getting smaller on defense has been all the rage. Safeties have become de facto linebackers. Linebackers have become edge rushers. And edge rushers have become defensive tackles. Speed — and the ability to negate offensive mismatches with it — has been at a premium, and teams’ quests to find mobility have often come at the expense of the size that defined so many defenses of the past two decades.

It’s important to remember, though, that any time the pendulum swings significantly in one direction, it likely doesn’t take long before it comes barreling back. When it does, people without their heads on a swivel are liable to get knocked on their asses. If the tendencies of the NFL’s elite last season are any indication, offenses plan to react to shrinking defenders and positionless football by promptly reversing course.

quote:

Most of the teams that utilize blocking backs and hefty formations are linked in some way, and all embrace a similar philosophy. By grinding undersized run-stoppers into dust, heavy packages are a way to mine a growing inefficiency for defenses built to live in the nickel formation. But the benefits don’t end there. Using tight ends and fullbacks also allows offenses to create mismatches, some of which may seem counterintuitive at first glance. Those varied advantages are why, as defenses get uniformly fast, the league’s smartest offenses are countering by getting big.

quote:

Schwartz’s clinic talk was especially focused on the run game, which — not surprisingly — is the reason that the majority of heavy formations are used. New England ran the ball 88 percent of the time it was in 22 personnel in 2016; the Titans, who ranked second in the league by lining up in 22 9 percent of the time, ran the ball on 87 percent of those snaps. Tennessee may be the best example of a team bulking up offensively as a means to push defenses around. By adding DeMarco Murray, Derrick Henry, and 2016 top-10 pick Jack Conklin to their roster last year, Titans general manager Jon Robinson showed his commitment to building a physical, run-based offense. Tennessee’s execution mirrored that. Only the Jets and Raiders ran fewer plays out of standard 11 personnel (one back and three receivers) in 2016, and that’s because each spent so much time with four receivers on the field.

The Titans are more than content to line up with two tight ends, a fullback, and one of their battering-ram backs in an attempt to wear down defenses. An offense that lacks a dynamic receiving talent has a defined ceiling (hence Tennessee using the fifth pick in the 2017 draft on wideout Corey Davis), but last year the Titans were so effective on the ground that they also maintained a reasonably high floor. They jumped from 32nd in Football Outsiders’ offensive DVOA in 2015 to ninth last season, thanks mostly to a running game that finished sixth in the same metric.

Rest of article gets into the details and breakdowns of this shift.
