Bills with Watkins/Maclin/Zay Jones would be a pretty solid receiving corps, but would still somehow only be the third best in the division.

By the way, has there been anything resembling an explanation as to why the Chiefs cut Maclin yet? I figured it may have been a locker room thing, but Alex Smith was beside himself when asked about the cut.

fsif

But why do they need the cap space now? Couldn't they use him this year and then cut him next?

What would the market look like for Alex Smith next year?

Texans, Cardinals, Bills?

It's a good question. Maybe Broncos if Lynch doesn't work out?

I don't think teams want to bother with veteran quarterbacks in the top 20ish range anymore unless the rest of the team is Super Bowl caliber. Teams like the Browns, 49ers, Texans, and the Jets all opted to go with obviously inferior quarterbacks or rookies over a Cutler or a Kaepernick.

(Obviously Kap and Cutler have their own set of baggage, but teams would over look them if veteran QBs in this range were considered more valuable.)

fsif

How good of a QB would Mahomes have to end up being to justify the draft capital and two years of a favorable rookie contract given up? Has to be at least a top ten, I'd think.

I was trying to withhold judgement for a while on the whole Kaepernick thing, but I think we've maybe reached a breaking point.

Eh, I mean you think Paul Allen would care about the controversy around Kaepnerick? The Seahawks already have a lot of locker room problems and a lot of players who hate their starting QB. I can see how adding Kaepernick into that mix would maybe not be a great idea.

Kap is a great locker room guy, by all reports.

That's not what I mean. A number of Seahawks - mostly the defense apparently - really do not like Wilson and feel that the team doesn't hold him accountable. If you suddenly throw in another viable starting QB into the mix.. what happens? If the reports of the team coddling Wilson and protecting him are true, then I can see this move in that scenario making sense.

Of course, overall I agree it's dumb because Kaep would be a great fit for what they do.

Oh. Yeah, that's true, but then I wonder why they even brought him in in the first place. And, of course, it's insanely dumb that the Seahawks would opt to make their team noticably worse rather than just hold Carroll accountable and ensure his moron team doesn't revolt against their obviously great quarterback, but teams do insanely dumb things all the time.

The Ringer has a piece up about how tanking might gently caress up the NFL: https://theringer.com/nfl-tanking-nightmare-new-york-jets-cleveland-browns-competitive-balance-6c9f3937811b

quote:

An NFL with multiple teams tanking at once would be a dystopian future in which playoff spots were determined, at least in part, by what teams in what division were tanking in a given season. If, for instance, the Jets tanked this year, and the Bills, starting up their new post-Ryan-brother regime and wanting a clean slate, did as well, the Dolphins, with four easy wins, could be nearly halfway to a wild-card spot without even playing a competitive game.

They went 5-11 last year and are starting McCown or Hackenberg while also fielding what was one of the worst defenses in football last year with Harris.

Cutting Revis is addition by subtraction, though, and they also added the No Fly Zone!

They just had a 10-win season with Fitzpatrick at the helm. I think they went from like a 5% chance at #1 to something closer to 50%.

fsif
Jul 18, 2003

But like, the efficacy of tanking is kind of incidental to the argument. As long as more teams start to think that tanking is better than finishing 6–10, it's at least somewhat plausible that we could have four or five teams stripping their rosters of assets each offseason and end up with less competitive games.

It could create a situation where wildcard berths are even more disproportionately determined by season schedules.
