We can still have great public transport and good roads. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

I would loving kill to have viable public transport to work. In Sydney it was an hour on two buses to work or 45 minutes down the m2 - buses every day!

In Brisbane it's 30 minutes driving over the Gateway or 1.5+ hours via public transport. It's ridiculous. Someone needs to organise more than one loving bus route over the Gateway so I don't need to go all the way into the city and back out again to get anywhere.

Hell, to bus into the city is 45 minutes (non peak express) or 15-20 minutes by car. This city is terrible beyond belief if you don't want to drive.

So happy Pell has finally been charged.

I have friends who have been waiting 40 years for this moment and, even though they know he'll never actually answer for his crimes, being able to watch all the horrors that man committed during his life be brought to light is as close as they will ever see to justice.

Cardinal George Pell unlikely to return to Vatican City

The article is paywalled, but here's the important bits:

quote:

POPE Francis on Thursday night offered guarded support for Cardinal George Pell, while expressing respect for the Australian judicial system that will decide his fate.

But Vatican insiders are already preparing to pension off Cardinal George Pell, regardless of the outcome of the case involving historic sex offences.

The Herald Sun has been told it is highly unlikely that Cardinal Pell, who was promoted to the Vatican three years ago to reform its multi- billion euro real estate and financial portfolio, will return to Rome in his high-profile role.

Pope Francis, while supportive of Cardinal Pell, is seeking to fend off his harshest critics and minimise any reputational damage to the church.

***

Archbishop Fisher said the archdiocese would not pay legal bills arising from the charges, but would assist with the cardinal’s accommodation and support on his return.

The Catholic Church could be forced to fork out for an expensive trip if doctors decide that Cardinal Pell is too ill to fly on a standard plane.

Last year, he gave evidence to the royal commission via videolink from Rome after his lawyers argued his heart condition was not compatible with a long flight.

Cardinal Pell could take a lengthy boat trip from Europe to Australia.

Or he could be “medivacced” on a private jet, for about $15,000 an hour — more than $350,000 for a 24-hour trip.

Australian National University professor of international law Donald Rothwell said the cost would not have to be borne by taxpayers.

“He is the subject of a summons, so it is his responsibility to appear at the court,” he said.

***

Officially, Cardinal Pell has been given leave of absence to fight the charges.

However, at the age of 76 Cardinal Pell is already a year past the normal retirement age, which would offer the church a ready explanation should it decide to dispense with his services.

My concern is that he's also a Cardinal-Prefect in charge of the Vatican's finances and they have no mandated retirement age. His position is up for renewal in another two years, I think, but it's anyone's guess what actually happens then.

Also, the pope is not obliged to accept his resignation.

Yeah, your issues are clearly affordability related, but even if you could afford to live closer to where you work then you'd just encounter all the same lack of bike (and pedestrian) infrastructure that currently exists. Sure, you might be happy to ride on roads where bikes are mixed with cars going 80kmph but a hell of a lot of people want to feel safe while they ride. Overall, if you want to really increase bike mode share rates then you need dedicated infrastructure for them.

Just out of curiosity, do you know how much do you spend on car related travel per year?

not to bang on any further but yeah I treat cyclists with respect but other drivers dont and that would prevent me riding to work too. I would love to not have to have a gym membership and just ride as its two birds with one stone.

in terms of my car related travel, its pretty large. We are looking at moving as our money situation is going to be better soon. Work travel will be half for the two closer offices and roughly the same for the third, but highway instead of urban driving.

currently im going through about $70 in petrol a week, plus the unseen costs (wear and tear) on the vehicle itself. sometimes im doing $90 in fuel plus tolls if I have a busy weekend with friends and family.

but yeah, in the next 3 months that fuel cost will be reduced while rent is increased, and Im totally cool with that. on top of that less time commuting which is the biggest factor.

I LOVE SEEING DEAD BABIES ON 𝕏, THE EVERYTHING APP. IT'S WORTH IT FOR THE FOLLOWING TAB.
Convicted racist upset there are too many Aborigines

quote:

I was sued by activists insisting no one could choose their "race". Yet the latest Census suggests 40,000 just did. There are now 649,171 Aborigines counted, compared to 548,368 just five years earlier.

The ABS believes there are actually 786,689 Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders after adjusting for undercounting.

On the counted numbers alone, that is 18.4 per cent growth - more than can be explained by the birth rate.

On the estimated numbers the growth is a 17.4 per cent since 2011.

In contrast, the rest of the population grew by 8.8 per cent, and with the help of immigration.

Some might assume it's fashionable to identify as Aboriginal among people who have a choice. Or there are more financial benefits in doing so.

ANU researchers Nicholas Biddle and Francis Markham say:

There are several reasons for the rapidly growing visibility of Indigenous Australians in our population statistics.

The first is the natural increase of the Indigenous population. On average, Indigenous Australians have a slightly higher number of children than non-Indigenous Australians.

In addition, the children resulting from relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians often identify as Indigenous, accelerating the growth of the Indigenous population. However, even after taking these factors into account, the Indigenous population was projected to reach no more than 746,815 by 2016 – around 40,000 people fewer than the latest census-based estimate.

While we won’t know how accurate the assumptions underlying these projections were for some time, the probable explanation for the “extra” 40,000 Indigenous people is that some individuals who chose not to identify as Indigenous in 2011 decided to identify as Indigenous in 2016.

Interestingly, the biggest growth is in Victoria - 25.8 per cent. That's presumably where intermarriage rates are higher. It's also our most Left-wing state.

That suggests a real public policy issue. With such huge growth in people identifying as Aboriginal - and in richer states - the demographic profile is being changed.

When we now measure progress in education, for instance, we must be careful to adjust for the fact that there are now many more children being included who would have not been included before. They are more likely to have fewer Aboriginal ancestors and to come from more mainstream families in urban areas.

That means the statistics may exaggerate progress for Aborigines in more traditionally Aboriginal areas.

PCs running outdated windows, slowest internet connection so your searches take forever (but it's ok, here's the local paper on the table and oh someone took the job section with them, welp), grimiest loving keyboards and mice you ever saw. Walking into that room was the most humiliating, demoralising thing. I finally found a job through no assistance of that useless pack of shits and they had the gall to mail me a satisfaction survey and then ring me once a week to remind me to fill it out and return it or otherwise my personal agent would get a low mark.

I had similar a couple of years back, with Max Employment, the evil fuckers.
But from what I could gather this hour on their PC's was instead of spending a week in a seminar learning how to better find a job, as if they could actually help a person. Of course the government was giving them a shitload of money on the pretense of training me for a week.
In the end I did my job hunting at home before I went in, with the jobs I applied for on a list with me. I copied that list on to their approved form at their office, handed it to them and walked out.
They were fine with this arrangement.

Dammit, even just remembering my dealings with Max Recruitment gets me really angry.
