The first national gun amnesty since the Port Arthur massacre will aim to keep some of Australia's 260,000 illegal guns out of terrorists' hands.

The three-month amnesty will allow people to hand in unregistered guns from July 1.

"This is an opportunity for people to present the guns to authorities, no questions asked and with no penalty," Justice Minister Michael Keenan said on Friday.

"If people don't take that opportunity, the penalties for owning an unregistered or illegal gun in Australia are very severe."

He said illegal guns were used in the Lindt cafe siege and the death of police accountant Curtis Cheng in Sydney, as well as being used in organised crime.

"We have seen, through terror attacks in Australia, that illegal guns have been used," Mr Keenan said.

"Now is the time to run another amnesty, with the aim of reducing this pool of illegal guns."

Mr Keenan gave the example of a family heirloom that might have been sitting in a garage, and people might be worried about the consequences of handing it in.

"What we want to do is reduce the number of guns like that in the community," he said.

"The fact [is] we've got a deteriorating national security environment," Mr Keenan told ABC radio.

"We've got an environment where there has been five terrorists attacks on our soil and, sadly, in the vast majority of those cases it has been an illegal firearm that's been used."

The government estimates there are 260,000 illegal guns in the community.

"The danger there is that there might be a circumstance where the wrong person - a criminal, a terrorist - might get their hands on those guns," he said.

The national amnesty will be the first since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which was accompanied by a gun buyback scheme.

Mr Keenan said more recent state-based gun amnesties had led to thousands of illegal guns being handed in.

Fellow cabinet minister Christopher Pyne said if illegal guns were not available, they could not have been used in the recent killing of Queensland police officer Brett Forte.

Labor is backing the amnesty.

"We would certainly encourage people to do the right thing and to hand them in," frontbencher Anthony Albanese told the Nine Network.

The Port Arthur shooting in April 1996 resulted in the deaths of 35 people at the popular tourist site in Tasmania.

Gunman Martin Bryant is serving 35 life sentences for the murders.

And again.

The ABC has apologised for airing an interview in which Melbourne breakfast radio host Red Symons asks the ABC journalist Beverley Wang if she is yellow.

The network removed the interview from its website on Friday after an outcry over Symons’s comments.

Symons also asked Wang “what’s the deal with Asians” in the combative and awkward interview.

He said he was unhappy about her new podcast It’s Not A Race because he too had an idea for a podcast he wanted to call “What’s the deal with Asians?”.

“First question is, are they all the same?” Symons asked.

When he asked what part of China Wang was from, she told him she was a Taiwanese Canadian.

She remained calm and friendly throughout the 18-minute chat despite the increasingly bizarre nature of the questions. Symonds conceded he had not listened to her podcast and did not know what it was about.

Symons: “Do they speak Mandarin or Cantonese?

Wang: “Who’s ‘they’?”

Symons: “The people in Taiwan.”

Wang: “They speak Taiwanese and they speak Mandarin. And in Canada, where I’m from, they speak English and French.”

Symons: “I knew that. You’re probably from the west coast of Canada.”

Wang: “Why do you think that, Red?”

Symons: “Because it’s closer to Asia.”

Wang: “I’m just asking, don’t get defensive.”

Originally recorded and edited for his Melbourne breakfast show, the entire interview was released as a podcast this week, before being taken down by the network.

“ABC Radio has removed the latest episode of Radio National’s It’s Not A Race podcast and an earlier ABC Radio Melbourne segment,” a spokesman said.

“A review of the editorial processes around this content and its use is in progress. ABC Radio apologises for the content going to air.”

Symons, 68, is famous for his role as a judge on Hey Hey It’s Saturday and has carried his abrasive style over to his popular ABC radio breakfast program. He was also a guitarist in the 1970s band Skyhooks.

Symons asked Wang about her attitude to blackface and the Harry Connick Jr incident he was involved in on Hey Hey in 2009. He challenged her opposition to blackface and said he defended the show when it was attacked for hosting a blackface act and offending Connick.

“I remember thinking at the time that it had become uncomfortable because Harry Connick Jr felt most uncomfortable with someone wearing what is alleged to be blackface,” Symons said.

Wang corrected his use of the word “alleged”. . “The make-up is there,” she said. “It’s definitely black make-up.”

Other ABC personalities argued on social media about the implications of the interview. Radio host Jonathan Green accused TV presenter Julio Zemiro of “trashing” her colleagues after she took him to task for his response to what she called Symons’s “racist rubbish”.

In her first podcast, Wang says she is the “first of my kind to host an ABC podcast on race” which she is tackling because it is complicated and “part of all of us”.

Sydneysiders flock to Nimbin in search of more affordable, alternative lifestyle

It was once best known as the drug capital of Australia but today Sydneysiders are flocking to buy land and homes in the NSW Northern Rivers village of Nimbin as it phoenixes from dippy hippy to hippy chic.

The lush green hinterland west of Byron Bay is now back in vogue for its property affordability, community values and, say locals, government vindication for its 40-year battle for the medical benefits of marijuana.

“We used to be dismissed as a bunch of stupid hippies,” says Michael “Mr Nimbin” Balderstone, a former London stockbroker turned Nimbin Hemp Embassy president.

Pip and Nic Aplin are moving out of their Potts Point apartment and heading north to Nimbin.

They’ve bought a block of land in Nimbin for $157,000 and plan to build a new home on it for $250,000.

“But look at how middle Australia is now embracing all our values of looking after the environment, alternative health, community values and – the big one that’s really changed everything – medical marijuana. So why not buy a house in Nimbin for $350,000 and live in such a vital, caring community?”

Sydney couple Pip and Nic Aplin heard the call and have just bought a 3450-square-metre plot of land off a bitumen road, a five-minute walk from the village for $157,000. Currently living in a small apartment in Potts Point without much natural light, they can’t wait to build their own home.

“We’re excited about the thought of having a house with a big deck and sitting outside on a big piece of land in such a beautiful environment,” says Pip, 34, who works as a waitress in a local cafe.

“We haven’t been able to afford anything in Sydney, and Nimbin is the kind of place where people still leave their front doors open, and is a great community where everyone helps each other.”

Nic, 36, an artist and former prop-maker on the US TV show Survivor is studying an online TAFE course in building design and is drawing up plans for a house which they hope to complete for about $250,000. “It’s going to be a very different feel up there but we’ll have the space to build an artist’s studio too, grow some food and create a nice life for ourselves,” he says.

They’re part of a flood of Sydneysiders now making the trek north from the Big Smoke to the rather smaller smoke, with Lismore Council opening up more land and subdivisions to accommodate a predicted population growth of about 6000 residents in the area by 2031. And with the average price of a three-bedroom house in Nimbin standing at $330,000-$350,000, Peter Robinson of Lifestyle Real Estate says it offers real value for money.

“Prices in Sydney are pretty crazy and I think people are really starting to appreciate the simple things in life again,” he says. “We’re seeing a lot of our kids coming back here now, realising what a good place it is, as well as a lot of newcomers.

“Yes, people used to talk about us as the drug capital but the real drug scourge of Australia today is ice, which we don’t have, and we don’t have alcohol-fuelled one-punch crimes, either. We just have marijuana and the worst thing you’ll get from a user is a cuddle.”

The village is also undergoing a facelift after a massive fire in the main street in 2014 burnt down its museum and famous Rainbow Cafe, with plans now going through council to replace them. But there are also existing cafes and restaurants, a community centre, a high school, supermarket and hospital. It’s also close to national parks and only a 30-minute drive to Lismore and its university and health services.

“I’ve seen a big increase in the last two to three years of people coming here to buy property,” says Amanda Johnson of Amanda Johnson Realty. “There’s more of a coffee shop vibe going on now and it’s got a lot more upmarket.

“People also love the alternative lifestyle, lifestyle properties, sustainability and permaculture, the lack of traffic, the markets and the beaches just a short drive away.”

Seachangers going to Byron Bay have pushed up prices along the coast so much, that Nimbin is now back on people’s radar for treechanges instead, believes the region’s mayor Isaac Smith.

“People are looking for a more affordable option and they want a small piece of land to grow a few vegetables and keep animals and have a good lifestyle away from the concrete jungle,” he says. “We noticed a spike about 12 months ago in our residential real estate sales and tourism, that’s still continuing.”

Locals are now pushing for more infrastructure to cope with all the new arrivals. Nimbin Chamber of Commerce president Teresa Biscoe says she can’t see any end to the influx. “People are getting so much bang for their buck here,” she says. “They’re discovering what a beautiful community it is, integrated, connected and welcoming.”

Why does Pauline hate Autistic Children?

Anidav
Feb 25, 2010

ahhh fuck its the rats again
ONE Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson announced this morning that her party will back the Federal Government’s $18.6 billion school funding package.

But she also said “we need to get rid of” autistic children from mainstream classrooms, arguing teachers had to spend too much time with them at the expense of other students’ education.

She said parents and teachers had raised the issue with her of children with disabilities or autism in mainstream classrooms.

“These kids have a right to an education by all means, but if there’s a number of them these children should actually go into a special classroom, looked after and given that special attention,” she said in the Senate this morning.

“Most of the time the teacher spends so much time on them they forget about the child who wants to go ahead in leaps and bounds in their education, but are held back by those.

“It’s no good saying we have to allow these kids to feel good about themselves and we don’t want to upset them and make them feel hurt.

“We have to be realistic at times and consider the impact that is having on other children in the classroom.

“We need to get rid of those people because you want everyone to feel good about themselves.”

She said it was difficult for One Nation to come to the position of supporting the $18.6 billion in extra funding for schools.

“I hope this will improve our educational standards if it is addressed in the classroom,” Senator Hanson said.

She criticised Labor for not supporting the bill, as the Opposition wants a further $22 billion to match the original Gonski funding proposed by the Gillard Government.

“I think it’s a good start, $18.6 billion. That’s a start, why can’t you work with the government with regards to this and then build on that,” she said.

“Stop opposing things just because you’re on the opposition. It’s about working together for the future of this nation. I just get so frustrated with the whole lot of you.”

Like any teacher worth their weight is fully trained for all kinds of kids and alot of schools offer kids who need it assistant teachers who accompany kids in vital classrooms like maths ect. Bigger classrooms have sub teachers who assist the main teacher too and I hear classrooms have iPads and Laptops these days so whatever teachers are telling Pauline Hanson to kick autistic kids out of classrooms is in the wrong profession.
