Surely this isn't because Perth just built a new stadium right? I sincerely hope were not staring down the barrel of another dumbass capital city rivalry ala Melbourne v. Sydney, only shittier, and more racist.

Perth Circa 2009 was unapologetically trash. I used to go to Brisbane for work and experience outrage at how much better food and coffee were, and that there were things to do on a Sunday even. Melbourne just made me furious at the state of things back home. Perth Circa 2017 is a vastly different animal though. The trains are actually a viable alternative to driving again (unless you live on the northern line, but in that case, piss off moneybags). Shops close at 9 during the week, instead of 6. We have an inexplicable number of small bars in and around the city, and even suburban cafes are worth eating at now. Some of them have even been serving coffee that you could call "good" by non-Western Australian standards. You can get breakfast after 10:30, and you can go to a good restaurant without having to book 3 weeks in advance because now there's more than 5 of them! I attribute a lot of the cultural turnaround to the influx of Melbournians as a result of the mining boom/housing affordability issues, and the rest to the lifting of some of our draconian liquor licencing practices. Some time around 2010, someone figured out that refusing to grant any new liquor licenses without first retiring an older one is a dumb, regressive idea, and around the same time Woolworths and Coles managed to convince themselves that people might actually want to buy groceries during the week, other than on Thursdays. It turns out, that running a city exclusively for the benefit of its loaded western suburbs retiree population is loving stupid, and results in a city that looks like it's striving to go back to being a town - who knew!

Yeah .38% of too much for anyone to reasonably afford is still unobtainable. And I know it'd save me money, but that doesn't make it any more possible. It's one of those cases where you gotta have money to save money, like the ability to buy food in bulk and store it, or afford cars or appliances that don't require maintenance. Or paying your rego yearly.

I expect we'll see this change in WA at some point, given the massive uptake of Solar here; otherwise the burden of paying for upkeep on the grid will fall on businesses and institutions for whom solar isn't going to make an appreciable difference (and also renters, but nobody making energy policy gives a blue gently caress about the poor apparently).

Pretty sure Albanese ran for the leadership under the same circumstances as Corbyn, and won the popular vote, but instead of actually being allowed to lead, the Right faction dropped Shorten in the spot instead. So yeah probably not possible under the current party structure.

Thanks Mr Dandrews. Be interesting to see if Mr Tough On Crime McGowan follows suit, given that half the state, when greeted with the recent report that meth use appears to be dropping based on waste water testing, responded with 'no it isn't! I think that actually included a few cops on talkback (but no evidence was presented to support this counterclaim of course).
