As silly as it sounds, he should get the free version of Game Maker and run through some tutorials for it. That will get him acquainted with the bare minimum of math required for making something, and he can figure out if the process appeals to him at all. Shaun Spalding is an employee of the company that's got several walkthroughs on youtube, some of them expecting no previous knowledge whatsoever. While commercially viable games are possible in Game Maker, it is limited and doesn't really provide much in the way of transferable skills.
