"Tubular! Catch you on the flip side!"
I can't wait to go with the first idea that comes to my head and roll with it because I find it funny for some reason and then end up with having all the judges hate it.

Also, if anyone wants me to help with your game, whether it's supplying lovely Voice Work or anything else feel free to contact me either here or on Discord. Take a look at https://afal.itch.io/ if you want to see the terrible things I've done in game jams in the past (I highly recommend An Video Game and Punch A Nazi though if you want to get a feel of what my "work" is like).

---

Anyway, I guess I should announce the bounties I always do:

There will be another bounty once the Game Making part of the jam is over (the "Guess The Judges Pick" one like I did for the littlejam earlier this year). Good luck to all taking part!

I tried integrating steam into the game and I thought it worked but couldn't get steam integration to behave with an exported game

fortunately I've come up with a theme-relevant solution to this

Ah, it's that time of the jam where everyone complains about the submission form because the upload section is highly optimised to induce huge amounts of anxiety, and at least one person a year forgets to click what platform their game is for.

Anyway, instead of using the last few days to polish my game I've decided to submit early because thinking about this game for Yet Another Day is too much :effort: and I'd rather be done with this garbage toilet nightmare.

So, I present: Angry Minion Bird And Shrek: Got To Get Home On Time Videogame For Kids

I could dismiss that with "Works for me" but that would be too dickish.

What windows are you on? Are you using 32bit windows?

Well great, I have no idea then. It also seems as though gamemaker forums/subreddits doesn't know either. I have no way of testing this either because all the people who have tested this so far has had it work.

And since I've already submitted I have no idea if it will run for any judge or the gong show. Great.

Well if it's only me so far you might be fine. I'm also more paranoid of something like that happening to my game now.

I've tried a hack to get the datetime stuff to work. gamemaker seems to have a bug that's specific to windows 8 on that (http://bugs.yoyogames.com/view.php?id=14811). I heard a rumour Sharpened Spoon is kindly allowing re-submissions and I want to make sure I've squashed this bug to stop me having a panic attack so I can try doing that.

God drat there's a lot of games to get through. Here are my thoughts on what I've played so far:

DMCA Takedown - Sieze and Desist - I loved the sprite work with this game. I'm not very good at brawlers so I couldn't get far in this game (the room with like a million people ganging up on you was too much for me especially with the 2 hit health I had... no I will not use the shield). Some nice music here. Was great to see the progress screenshots with this game.

b00tl3g kr3w - One of the things I liked about this game is how each bit felt a bit like Krillin's "140 games or less" project. There's a setup of a silly premise, and then there's a punchline (or multiple). The aesthetic of this is pretty cool and oh god I'm getting nightmares about irc again. I liked the multiple responses that you could put in chat, and that it didn't matter what you were typing it would still type out what you wanted to say. Nice.

JUICE - Ok, a Mario hits his head on the block gag with blood particles going everywhere gag, that's nic..... wait what's going on here.... why is the scenery changing.... why is Mario shooting George Costanza? What the fuuuuuuuuuuck.

In all seriousness, I liked how this game played. Although I wasn't a particular fan of the pacing (Mario was a little too slow for me and I have no idea if it was intentional or my computer having terrible framerate). I didn't finish this game cause I got killed by the final boss (I believe), which then took me right to the start of the game and I couldn't be bothered to do another 20 minutes to get to the end again. Other than that, I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would.

Krum Frog Teach ABC - A wonderful metaphor for the jam itself to be honest. I love waving around krum frogge and having his little arms flail about. The art in this is great. Some minigames I find a little harder than others, but overall it's pretty good.

Also, it works on mobile! Krum Frog on the go!

Merioz 20 : To the land of flying and to flowers - What if Mario but with unity's weird physics? This was a pretty fun game. I especially liked how the fireflower thing would let you spit out fire infinitely and was almost a manoeuvring mechanic in itself. Liked the game and glad that the game ended before the gimmick got stale.

Soul Castle - I have never played a Dark Soul. Wasn't sure what to expect with this game. I liked how it was almost a rhythm-esqe game (I don't know if that can be said for other souls-like games) where you have to time correctly when to swing your axe or dash across. I loved how the game got weirder and changed style as it went along (this seems to be a theme in a lot of games this year). A really good endboss that requires you to think about your moves rather than straight up mashing towards their face. A good game.

Red Planet IV - Ok the first thing I did was I went to the options. I then noticed that it was in "hard mode" so I thought "I'll just move this to easy because I suck at SHMUPS". After 5 minutes of going through every one of the options (which assured me wasn't an easter egg) I then decided to play the game and got owned instantly because the screen was filled with enemies. Well gently caress.

I didn't get far in this game. Partly because I suck at SHMUPS but also it felt like an awful grind to get any upgrade. I liked the music though I probably only heard the first opening notes.

BOOTLEGS - A good video game. Didn't try multiplayer, but singleplayer was great. It surprised me when I saw a bootleg falling off the first time, but I liked how the walk functions differently the fewer legs you have, adding a little bit of challenge and skill into the game. A nice little thing I've gone back to a bunch of times

Smash-em Randall - This was a wonderful allegory of being trans. The world in which the main character lives in, forces the main character to live a life of being male. This is a destructive life that forces them to brute force through life in order to get to the end. However in doing so, they don't live life to their potential and therefore get the "bad end". By changing over to a woman the main character is free to live up to their full potential and reach up into new heights until you reach the "good ending". As a man, the main character in unhappy, and a lot less colourful than they are when they're a woman who's more happy and colourful. The game is short but then again that's reflected onto life itself. Life is short and if you were to live your life to the fullest then surely you'd prefer to live a more colourful and happier life living to your full potential rather than being unhappy and grey and destructive to yourself and things around you. A good video game.

PUNCH FIGHT 7: BOOT TO THE HEAD - I never seem to get any luck with Unreal Engine games in these jams so I can't really say I get excited (like some people) about playing any game made with it. That being said, this game looks pretty good. I was unable to do the first jump, firstly because I failed to realise that you can change the camera view with the mouse and fell over; and then after the second time when I tried to do it but only missed by I whisker i gave up and closed the game because I had such a hard time navigating getting back to where to make the jump because moving around is pretty hard with terrible framerate the first time. Someone please buy me a new computer that can run video games thank's

The Smash Boys vs. The Nerdy Boys - Harold Krell does it again. Man the animations in this are great. The selection screen is a highlight in this. The boss fights and the build up towards them are also great. Oh god those blood smears. Oh god the thrusting. Yeah this is great. The only problems I found were that rounds took ages to complete and nerds somehow need like a million hits to get killed by buff boys but there we go.

---

Anyway it's time for the Other bounty I have. Guessing who will win each category

The google form is here: https://goo.gl/forms/9nTcfOAn2INU4NZS2

The form will close sometime before the 11th so get your entries before then. Winner with the most correct guesses (which if there is a draw I'll be first name from a hat) wins Glittermitten Grove.

---

Anyway, sorry if I'm being a bit slow with this. I have like a post mortem to write as well as playing the rest of the games. Lates

"Tubular! Catch you on the flip side!"
Not sure what else there is to add to the whole "Gong Show Considered Harmful" discourse but here we go.

I think a bunch of people have been in this jam long enough to realise that the style of their games they submit to this jam kind of mould into what can be considered "what would look good on a livestream" rather than "what's the best game I could possibly make". This ends up with games that kind of fit a "10 minute slot" because that's usually the allotted time frame for each game in the livestream. The problem comes if someone then makes a "quality" game that doesn't fit the stream's dynamic it's going to go off poorly. A lot of people have told me that "An Video Game" was pretty good, but it went poorly on The Gong Show because playing through the game requires a more intimate session than a public viewing with multiple people discussing/commentating on what they are seeing.

This goes for video playthroughs in general. The Beginner's Guide is my favourite game of all time but I think that let's plays of it are a complete waste of time (unless it's the extremely good one of Davey Wreden watching someone else play the game and commenting and then also playing spelunky part of the way through). You've got to think of JonTerp like PewDiePie. A PewDiePie without any of the following or the white nationalist tendencies (though I'm not sure about the latter bit) but still a "personality" that plays video games

Like here are some of the things I've seen that tend to be really popular in the stream:
  • Gameplay that ends up being a joke half the time
  • Things that one would consider bugs and would be polished out otherwise but are kept in the game because they look silly
  • Stuff that integrates with twitch or streaming software that gives an unique experience to the player
  • Something made in Unreal Engine for some reason
  • Gameplay that doesn't require any thought process to get into because Jon doesn't want to read stuff
  • Numbers going up a lot. That seems to kick up the dopamine a bit.

Things that don't go very well
  • Tricky controls that take a while to get used to
  • Games with "long" narratives where a "load of nothing" happens
  • Games that aren't made with Unreal Engine for some reason
  • Games that are too difficult to play or finish
  • Multiplayer games that doesn't have a low barrier of entry
  • Games that require a but of time to get the hang of them unless you have someone enthusiastically and patiently guiding the player through the game
  • Games where a Belgian statue does a pee pee on Donald Trump (or rather, games that don't "have a lot of variation" as it goes along and tend to just be long setups to just do one joke)

I thought LEGS was a great game (I'd imagine that I'd get my rear end kicked if I played with actual people though). I can totally see how it wouldn't work on stream (I... wasn't there... sorry. Apparently shitposting is bad, but also, I LOVE HORSES BEST OF ALL THE ANIMALS I LOVE HORSES THEY'RE MY FRIENDS).

I'm reminded of an interview I saw with someone who had been on America's Got Talent. One thing they mentioned was that on AGT, it's the Judges that are the stars of the show, and that the people "taking part" are the guests. Therefore it is beneficial to incorporate the judges in your act and make them feel like the stars, and then you secondary. That's probably the approach for games that might work for the gong show. Who knows?

That being said, some games that end up being favourites are ones that performed poorly in Gong Shows (and vice versa). I don't know what the solution here is. I'm just pissing into a rusty bucket full of piss labelled "Something Awful Dot Com"

"Tubular! Catch you on the flip side!"
Got some more quick looks/comments on some games I've played:

DüM II: Heck on Earf - Really nice sprite work on this. Like all over the place. Also some great uses of screenshake and so on. This is an incredibly polished game. Having to reload manually gave the game a good amount of challenge. Really nice.

Headphone Hero - Cool little megaman clone. Platforming was a little frustrating at times, and the game would pretty quickly overwhelming with enemies all over the place. Pretty difficult to get through but the different enemies were cute.

SUPER MEGA 256-IN-1 - This not only started in full screen it also cut off a bunch of bits on each side because it wasn't scaled correctly for my screen and I couldn't change it. This meant that I couldn't play some games properly. From what I did play with though, was pretty goofy for the most part. I liked how each game was connected to each other, but how each bit correlated with each other felt a bit random. Enjoyed what was there though.

Super Gargle Blaster - I kind of misunderstood what was going on and though I was the big spaceship at first. I then realised that I was supposed to do an escort mission. I'm not sure if I'm right in saying this but I'm fairly sure I wasn't taking damage from things which is good because there's nothing more frustrating in an escort mission than having to manage your own health as well as someone elses. Game got a lot harder as I went along and it kind of felt like a big jump between difficulty from one level to the next. I did like getting to play around with the upgrades and trying the best configuration for each mission. Cool game.

Naked Bootleg - I too am also one of the "don't like sports" people but... wow this game hooked me. The game feels more like a "sports themed" puzzle game than an actual sports game which is cool. Has that problem I have with most puzzle games where if I get stuck on a level and I don't know the solution I give up. I played a good amount of levels though and there was some good progression and adding of extra mechanics as you go along.

Welcome Treasureman - Nice little NES rom. The player definitely needs some invincibility frames though because dying happened A Lot. Would be really cool if someone got it working on actual hardware.

Legs - I liked the style of this game. Like, I know the blockyness of the environment is probably closer to the side of "placeholder" rather than "final art" but felt very cohesive. I kind of feel as though the one level provided isn't really beginner friendly enough considering that there's some kind of manoeuvring things you have to learn by experimentation almost. I also love the quake/UT/Worms-esque death messages; a nice detail.

Overreach - The other smash bros game in this jam. This looked pretty good but that may have something to do with the models used which I'm guessing were modified rather than made from scratch? The controls on this were kind of painful for my hands on a keyboard (I had a controller on hand but it didn't seem to respond). The how to play screen said it was arrow keys but it was actually wasd? In fact I'm not sure if the keyboard controls were right because I felt like some of the keys weren't doing anything. The bot is also pretty brutal and I'm not sure if that's because I'm Bad At Video Games or whether it was actually rock solid. Some difficulty sliders would be helpful .

"Tubular! Catch you on the flip side!"
ok, the last batch of games to review now

Bootleg Bernie and his Album Making Journey - Nice short game. Punches not registering was a little annoying. The credits seemed to show that there was a lot of music used, but it only felt like some were in the game. Maybe it's different on different playthroughs I couldn't really tell.

Fast Forward Record Rewind - Cool stealth game. Liked the mechanics with this one, and I liked that you could easily go through the story without too much punishment for "not doing the job". I couldn't seem to score anything which was odd to me. Cute aesthetics.

Tamale Drive - Really cool art in this. I like the whole warioware-esque minigames when playing the games but concentrating on that while also keeping an eye out for cops was a pain in the rear end. Didn't really get far in it because of that.

Bootleg Miners - Ah, a duckhunt clone. Ah, it does the whole lightgun thing when you shoot cool! Ah the little laugh from the prospector(?). I don't really have much to say about this game to be honest.

SimShine - This game fills the "making little self working systems" part of my brain and I spent a bit of time on this game as a result of that. Not sure what the speakeasy does. Found a nice exploit where you can get infinite money when you open the sales box. I got like $10,000 just making whiskey and moonshine in the place you start up with. It did also mean that heat built up a lot quicker than normal though. Would love to see the bugs in this get squashed and have it expanded upon.

Missile Champions - Nice Rocket League demake. AI is a bit difficult to beat but still fun nonetheless. Really makes me realise that Rocket League is just pong with cars though.

Sherlock Holmes and the Three Mysteries - An RPG Ma... oh.. a HaxeFlixel game? ok. This one was pretty short. I'm to assume that there's only One (and a half) mysteries? A rather interesting in-game reason for a lack of content which is probably more likely due to time constraints in the jam. Would have loved to see more puzzles myself, but I enjoyed what was there.

Booze Blues - The description says that the levels are randomised but I swear I got the same level every time. This game reminded me a lot of Bit Trip Runner which reminded me of how much I hated Bit Trip Runner because every move had to be precise and at the correct time and it was the same here. I didn't get that far into this game because of the frustrating and unforgiving levels.

Awful Runners - I got stuck in one place and couldn't go back. I ran out of money pretty quickly and failed to move the ship anywhere. I did manage to tip over another ship though but they somehow managed to still attack me?

Thriftynauts - The childlike drawings in this are pretty cute. Got pretty hilarious seeing my laser go bigger and bigger and filling the entire screen almost while also only dealing 0.1 damage. The "katamari" aspect of it gets undermined when it becomes harder to move because you're just swamped with scrap metal you can't get rid of

Bat-Man and the Sacred Stones - OK, one thing: The controls on this are really loving good. Like it's really satisfying to get the webslinging right or to stick to the edge of a wall and climb upwards or hang upside down. The mixing of superheroes got a laugh out of me.

BBA SLAM - HORSE

ShexEx - ShexEx Classic Edition - Lots of silly joke games here. Nice nod to pzzl here as well. I was expecting more with the final game and ending though.

Crazy Smuggler - I started this expecting it to fail on me because it's an unreal game. Didn't get any issues with the main menu, so far so good. Try and play the game and get an error the first time. Ok, try again. The next time I try and load the game the whole thing starts going 1 frame every 30 seconds. Then my laptop catches on fire.

The Booze Barn - Interesting papers please-like mechanics with "making sure you're making enough so your family can eat" bit after each round. The first minigame is the most frustrating of them all. In fullscreen the mouse managed to click out of the screen and switch to another application I had running. In windowed mode, it didn't do much difference. Without watching the videos of the stream I can imagine Jon being pernickety about cursor locking. Other than that, I enjoyed the variety in the minigames and how they changed over time to stop it getting samey.

---

Anyway, I think I'm done. I'll be announcing the winners of the bounties soon. Got to write a post mortem as well somehow.

uh... hm... it looks like only one person has submitted for the "guess the judges picks"... I guess Tann is the winner of Glittermitten Grove. All of the predictions might be totally wrong but who cares?
