Hi thread i've seen lots of people talking about how cool and good this show is and seeing this thread reminded me I was meaning to give this a try. I've only seen the first episode so far but it's instantly won my heart by having characters sing the background music while fighting hoards of monsters and frequently pausing the action to give a sweet name to all the cool attacks everyone is doing.

The Noise are too cute to be evil monsters though. :(

The OP says that the lyrics for songs Crunchroll didn't sub are online somewhere. Is there a site that has all of them or is it better to try and look them up individually?

Also episode 2 was good but the bigger Noise aren't as cute.

Thanks for these i'll try to remember them when I get through the first season. Are these from the 2nd or 3rd season?

Also, since it looks like the wiki doesn't list songs by which episode they appear in i'll have an easier time just looking for fansubs.

Holy poo poo, This English. Too bad about the rest of the scene. Seriously that was um something. Something that I hope isn't common to the rest of the series.

Also, i'm very upset Section 2 told Hibiki not to reveal she's a Super Hero to her best friend, because it's very rude. Though i'm glad they're teaching her to punch good by watching Bruce Lee movies and dressing like Ryu.

So I finished Season 1: Meteoroid Falling, Burning, Disappearing and Then... of Symphogear. I'd say it was pretty cool and good. And I liked it a whole lot.

The premise alone basically sold me on it immediately. The Power of Rock as a weapon is always extremely cool and I adore anything that expresses character motivations, personality, backstory and development through music and song, and by the show's nature that happens just about every episode. The show knows it's got a homerun of a concept too and goes all in on it. It's not until like episode 5 they bother explaining why everyone's singing and the explanation is barely a sentence long. They let the fact the characters are singing songs about who they are as they destroy hordes of interdimensional enemies speak for itself, it doesn't need to be commented on really.

The characters are all very good as well. Hibiki's the main character but Chris and especially Tsubasa get almost as much focus and development, with Miku not too far behind. Their development and arcs are cool and paced well, with interesting themes being explored through them. They have strong personalities and good interactions with each other and have crazy weapons and cool attack names. Solid supporting cast as well even if I don't remember the name of any of them except for Gen who is amazing. Even if he should stop hiding stuff from people and also not tell others to hide stuff from people.

Kinda down on its villains though. The Noise have great designs and I love how they move and everything but they never really have a good showing and are always cannon fodder. This ain't a monster of the week show so even the bigger more unique Noise never really amount to anything, only remaining a threat due to being a one hit kill to normal people. Chris is just way better as a hero than villain and Fine is complicated. The tower of Babel stuff is super great and well-connected with the themes but it's so difficult to consider end of show Fine and early Fine as the same character. She's introduced literally torturing a teenager and emotionally manipulating her on top of that, and it ends with her as a somewhat tragic figure who's learned a lesson about communication and the potential for redemption in a future life. And it's just kinda weird.

Really fun show though. Looking forward to watching the OVAs next.

Edit: Also I feel I should bring this up but Communication through music and across languages is a super solid theme that I am surprised more works don't discuss. Because its interesting and relevant and cool and I really like what the show does with it. It's got some extraordinarily good ideas and implements them well.

the thing about fine's 'redemption' is that it's less because she deserves it and more because Bikki thinks everyone deserves it. Both Fine's arc and Bikki's baggage get some more air time in S2, so I highly recommend giving it a shot sometime.

edit: Also Bikki not getting any named attacks is the idea. She doesn't actually have a gear. The show wasn't kidding with that line about her gear being holding the others' hands.

I get that Hibiki is just the nicest and it makes sense for her to offer redemption and forgiveness, because she's a pure angel. But it's still weird to me that the character who ends the series smiling warmly at forgiveness and basically saying she'll make up for her actions in the future is the same character that was introduced through torture, especially as Chris is crying as Fine dies. Which again makes sense considering how attached she was (due to said torture and also emotional manipulations) but it's so weird that's the last note of their relationship. I wasn't a fan.

And if Hibiki's real gear is the power of friendship and hand holding then every time she held someone's hand and gave an insightful and sweet comment about how much she cares about and believes in them should have gotten a name and splash screen!!!!

E: I'll definitely get to Symphogear G eventually. Probably pretty soon. I liked the first season a lot.

Was there a budget increase between seasons or something? Because I think the animation has gotten a noticeable boost. Fight scenes were really good the first two episodes. The Symphogears look to have been upgraded between seasons as well. Hibiki's jet punch is incredibly rad.

Seems sorta weird Maria is using Dark Gungnir when she's being set up as Tsubasa's rival but I guess Gungir is pretty heavily related to Tsubasa anyway. Also, i'm very disappointed her armed gear isn't just her cape. Speaking of armed gears it's extremely cool that they're treating Hibiki's Gungnir's actual weapon as power gained from holding hands. Like it's not considered a metaphor or anything, it's her Symphogear's real power. It owns.

Also, I hope every season starts with a concert. They're cool.

So I finished Symphogear G and it was very good. Higher highs than season 1 and much higher lows too, but I think I still enjoyed the 1st season a little more. It had a bit more focus on the development of the main cast and on exploring their characters and their interactions with each other (Tsubasa and Chris's relationship excepted which got a lot of time this season instead), and that's the part of the show I like the most. Even if the fight scenes and villains were far improved.

And I know I just said that but man Hibiki really shined in G. She she gets so many cool moments in G and is just fantastic all round, also she gets like 4 seperate songs for her Symphogear and they're great!! The look into her backstory was nice too and explains a lot about her, but I was really expecting that to involve Miku more and although Miku got some really big focus in getting an evil Gear I kinda feel she was under-utilised. It's not until halfway through the series she gets any real important scenes with Hibiki and their relationship is one of the strongest parts of the show, then again their songs in episode 10 being about love and everything was very sweet and nice. And i'm glad I know enough Japanese to catch the wordplay in Miku talking about echoes a couple of times in her song. Chris was also a highlight and the flashback of her becoming friends with the girls in her class and her talking about how she's found a home with everyone was honestly one of my favourite parts of the season. Although she (and Tsubasa) spend a big part of the middle of the season not getting any real big focus though and it's a shame. They both keep the same song for their symphogear over all 13 episodes too and that was disappointing.

The new symphogear users were pretty cool for the most part though it's a shame their individual rivalries with the main cast don't get much play (excepting Shirabe and Hibiki which was actually really good especially with Shirabe being Fine and all), and I really liked that idea. Especially the Tsubasa/Maria scenes that were pretty central in the earlier episodes. Maria got pretty lame though in the latter half of the season, and she was really cool early on. I loved how completely opposite to everyone else her songs didn't reflect her at all and were complete lies. I enjoyed the idea a lot but she really could've found her conviction earlier than 10 minutes into the final episode. It's also really hard to sympathise with her when her teaming up with Ver really messes up Kirika and Shirabe and they're pure and good girls who deserve happiness. Speaking of, Kirika rides a giant jet-powered scythe like a witches broom and Shirabe's ultimate attack is just a giant robot so they're the coolest and the best. Also, Fine's implementation in the season through those 2 was interesting and well done. I feel better about her character now than I did at the end of season 1.

Nastassja was good as well, even if she was kind of a bad mum. I liked her relationship with the new kids. As a villain she was completely overshadowed by Ver though (even discounting how she basically stopped being a villain around episode 8). He starts off as just smarmy and smug but he's the type of pathetic, petty, and crazy villain that I love. His plan was ridiculous, his motives so utterly small and worthless, his actions awful, and his faces incredibly entertaining. He ruled. Even if he didn't say as many english words as I was told he would.

In summation, it's still real dumb Hibiki doesn't get a cool named attack when even Ogawa does. Like What The Hell!?!?!?

Looks like i've come to the end of my Symphogear journey. GX was a fun time. I was kinda worried I wouldn't like it that much since many seemed to regard it as the worst season or at least a serious step down from G, but I quite enjoyed it even if it does have some some issues. I honestly think they did a admirable job of balancing the now huge main cast, Tsubasa definitely needed more time for her stuff since you can't just resolve all that in half an episode, Chris kinda just went through the same arc as last season but with Kirika and Shirabe replacing her school friends and Tsubasa, and I don't think KiriShira really needed an episode about them discovering they worry about each other because of love and everyone also worries about them because they care, but I still thought it was decently done. There was some good focus on a lot of the characters some interesting dynamics and a lot of different characters interacted with each other and expanded on their relationships.

Hibiki like always had a good arc. Communication and understanding's been a big part of the series since season 1 but it was cool to see her struggle to forgive and connect with her lovely Dad, it's a bit more down-to-earth than communicating with sympathetic misguided terrorists or crazy murderers (though those were good too). I think her Dad may have got off a bit lightly but I think that part of her arc was still fairly well down, it was super personal and difficult for her and I think kinda shows Hibiki's a real tough and strong person more than all those times she delivered loving sweet knock out punches. Her and Miku's relationship was also real important through basically the whole of the season again which was nice because it's always been one of the best parts of the show. Maria was also a highlight. Since she only really found her resolve late into the final episode last season it was just good for her to have a lot of scenes with that new perspective. It develops her relationship with Tsubasa which I thought was pretty interesting the times it was touched on in G, and she gets good and interesting scenes with most members of the cast. She's a good mum. Also, Airgetlam is an incredibly cool relic even if it sucks it doesn't have a cape. Those two I think had the most solid showing but everyone else had plenty of good scenes and interactions with other characters. Chris as senpai to Kirika and Shirabe was a really good dynamic, Kirika and Shirabe themselves still have a fun relationship, and although Tsubasa I think had the most rushed development she gets cool moments with Chris and Maria and the only good autoscorer fight. Good stuff all round.

I remember reading some post that said the supporting cast got kinda shafted in GX and although Gen certainly took a back seat (no training montage. :smith:) I thought they had a good showing. Maybe a little bit more relevance than G honestly. Hibiki's friends still only got one scene of particular importance but it was good, and I think Miku had a bit more of a presence this season than last. She's not around for the final conflict which is super lame but there were lots of scenes showing just how important she is to Hibiki and vice-versa even if nothing quite as significant as her brainwashing occurs. Miku is very cool and the "gentlest fist in the world" comment in the finale was super sweet. With Elfnein joining Section 2's support team they're around for more stuff, she takes the bullet for one of them and there's a couple of scenes about how much they appreciate and believe in her. More stuff than they usually get. Speaking of Elfnein she's pretty alright, not super interesting but still a good character. I liked when Maria was mumming her and teaching her how to volleyball. I'm glad she got an outfit change very early on though. I really liked all the character stuff this season, if there was anything that slipped i'd say it was the action. Not because it was badly animated or anything but I didn't like a lot of the scenarios or stories around the fights.

The first half of the season has a really consistent trend of a gear user getting their rear end beat by autoscorers and noise then losing their relic and being completely defeated only for their enemy to mock them and just peace out. It's always super anti-climatic. There's some good drama in a couple of those scenes but it just follows the pattern surprisingly strictly and it's kinda lame. It gets even worse for those few episodes where Carol is out of the picture because while the Autoscorers I think make fine eccentric and unnatural minions who have cool and weird powers they just can't carry the story themselves. The water and fire ones go out in super lame ways because there's just nothing to their conflicts with Maria and KiriShira and losing is all part of the plan anyway, the episodes are more about the gear users growing up than the fights. And while the development is decent and fun the fights carry no weight. Exception being the wind doll because "my sword is a philosophical weapon" loving owns and instantly transforms the fight into one where character development is the express and obvious purpose and the conflict has meaning again. Still some good fights though and the final stretch of episodes is as wild a ride as ever.

Carol herself is a good villain. Not close to as fun as Ver but she's more relevant to the themes of the story and I can appreciate that. She touches upon a lot of the consistent motifs across the show and is central to a lot of the new themes GX is about like Miracles and Dads. Also, a harp is a really good weapon for the show and i'm surprised no one else has used an instrument as a weapon before. Ver is also back and while that's great because he's still super crazy and enjoyable he is just too generally effective and competent to be the Ver I love. He also sacrifices himself and gets acknowledged as a hero (albeit as "The Worst") and that's lame, him getting carted away yelling about how he was gonna be a hero if they'd just let him die was the perfect end for the guy.

Anyway, Symphogear is a real loving good anime and I liked it a lot. The fact that i've written far too many words about each season shows this fact. It was super fun.

I might have misinterpreted the last scene but Carol does the whole memory transfer thing Garie used to do and it shows Elfnein's vitals dropping to 0. Then all the girls visit the next day and Carol's there, or at least her body is since while she has the same clothes Carol did in the previous scene it's pretty clear that the person's actually Elfnein, and Elfnein's body is nowhere to be seen.
