I swear I just have some kind of mental block. I can't think of orcs without thinking of orc restaurants because of that line in the LOTR movies. Even if they just picked up the word 'menu' from, like, I don't know, scouting missions, it shows their minds are capable of much more than just wanton slaughter. Sure they are just cannibalizing one of their own kind, but they care about food, they're aware of restaurants, they know some places have places you can go and order things and I'm sure that idea sounds pleasant to tons of them. We see that scene where they are popping out of the ground and being excavated and being handed weapons - does someone have to teach them how to speak the same language the hobbits are using? they seem to understand what is going on - Meriadoc Brandybuck looks down at his legs when the other orc guy says 'What about his legs! They don't need those!'. Are they just talking in that language out of a courtesy to the hobbits? We know there are several other languages, seems weird that orcs would come magically programmed just to talk in the hobbit language. That would be a design flaw really since it means their communications can be intercepted and understood - if you have a language you can program into people with no manuals, books, or really anything for the enemy to look up, it can be a powerful tool to conceal, like, think the Navajo code talkers in WW2. |
