Coming into this late but I'm a rules nerd so here we are. You are correct that the rouge is awesome. The point behind it is that you're rewarding an offence for being able to get the ball into their opponents endzone, and the opponent not being able to get it out. It makes kicking plays a lot more interesting as there's always something that's going to happen (especially since some members of the kicking team can technically recover their own kick).

Fun fact: if the ball hits the uprights when it's being kicked out of the endzone, it's a live ball. Never seen it happen, but I can imagine everything getting a little crazy.
