I actually agree with P.K. that the Predators will probably be back. They have a great young d-corps and are about to have a very good young goalie, a few decent forwards and they're a juggernaut Unlike the Sharks last year, I really felt bad for Sharks fans because everyone knew that was that team's last chance.

They're a great team with a ton of potential. Hopefully Rinne can bounce back from this series. If the Pens weren't playing, I would have been rooting for them.

Eric the Mauve posted:So how many guys just played their last game with the Penguins? MAF for sure, Cullen almost definitely, Hainsey likely. Whoever Vegas takes (Hagelin probably but I can still dream it'll be Maatta). Jultz maaaaybe but I don't think anyone will give him a big enough offer sheet that the Penguins won't match it. Lay off Maatta. He came through in the playoffs. I have to imagine they protect Shultz. Letang and him. I'd rather risk Dumo or Cole than Shultz.

Jake Guentzel interview on CBC. He sounds like he hasn't gone through puberty yet, I am not kidding The Pens get to protect three defensemen, it should be Letang/Dumo/Schultz but I greatly fear it will be Letang/Dumo/Cole. I don't think JR is stupid enough to protect Maatta and I don't think Vegas will take him. e: Although I won't at all be surprised if JR leaves Maatta or Schultz unprotected and then pays Vegas off not to take him.

Jultz is still an RFA right? Not like the Penguins could keep him anyway. I think Maatta will play better if the Penguins have Letang around to absorb more minutes.

It will take a legit megacontract, like 6/40 or something, to dissuade the Penguins from matching and I don't think anyone is going to give him that kind of offer sheet. I think probably someone is going to give him a pretty big offer sheet, like 5/25, but the Pens will grimace and match. And if they don't they'll get a cache of draft picks which isn't the worst thing in the world. Expansion draft is before the offer sheet period right?

Cap hell is when you give big contracts to players who don't deserve them (but Jultz does deserve $5-6M a year) or long contracts to old guys (Jultz isn't old). If you just have so many good players you can't keep them all then that's a pretty good place to be, you just trade the excess guys and keep reloading. c.f. the Blackhawks, who are only just now beginning to transition from Too Many Good Players to Cap Hell.
