new phone who dis posted:I have the same experience sometimes. I'll call because the cable or internet is out and they'll start doing their profuse apology thing and I'll just cut them off with "It's okay, dude. Things happen and you're not directly responsible. I'm not mad. You're just doing your job and I can appreciate that." You can feel the relief through the phone when they realize you aren't going to be "one of them". I got full year extension of the intro price for my internet service once because I was nice to the guy on the phone. Like, there was no technical reason for the extension at all. The internet service was $30 for the first year and $60 after that. I called up and just straight up asked if I could have another year of low price lol. After realizing that there was no real problem the guy said he was just gonna slot me in for another year of the intro price because I was polite and most people who call just yell at him

Maybe they're from California or some other civilized place. Yeah I was thinking this too. A lot of gas station lobbies/kiosks never close, but even for those that do the pumps usually operate 24 hours a day. I can't remember even a single time in my life that I have seen gas pumps closed at night unless they were broken. I guess California is just more civilized.

I was like, "hey man, your brother's a pretty funny guy" and he responded with "I'm glad you think so" so that was the day I learned Dave Attell may not have the best relationship with his brother. Alternative explanation: he was sick every bozo he came across in public talking about his famous brother.

Starman Super DX posted:The only leverage we have as employees is based in this pain in the rear end trend of management limiting hours and forcing a skeleton crew of part-time workers to overextend. There was a small riff between me and woman covering my lunch right now because she's stressed for getting stuck here and extra hour and a half, and beyond the necessity for hours, she's telling me she wants to go home and I said "why don't you?" What are you, a commie? This is America, the company is literally a person and it has needs!

That feel when you hear the phrase "my pleasure" more than once inside an establishment/on a phone line and you know it's because management has ordered the staff to say that instead of "you're welcome".

She came up to me real mad that I was ignoring her, but I was all, "Uh... I don't work here." I go shopping frequently after work but my uniform is straight up "Auto Mechanic" (even though that's not what I actually am) so nobody bothers me when I hit up the grocery store or whatever on the way home. Starman Super DX posted:This is annoying. Why didn't the kid just leave you alone after you said you were good? That's the point that the employee says "okay just let me know if you need anything" and leave. Secret shoppers. AKA retail's little Hitlers. In some secret shopper programs if he stopped after the "I'm good" and didn't at least offer to assist further anyway then he could get a bad rating. I got a bad secret shopper rating once working retail. I was on top of a gosh darn ladder sorting inventory in these overhead bins when someone came by and asked where some common item was. From the top of the ladder I told her "aisle 6 on your left" and with no more words or any hint that she needed further assistance she went off towards them. BAM. It was a secret shopper! Apparently I was supposed to get down off the ladder and escort her to the thing she asked for. Even though she made no request like that all and seemed fine with the directions while I was juggling the upper bin inventory. poo poo's stupid man, and it makes employees do stupid things trying not to get burned by it. Starman Super DX posted:I think keeping the offer open and giving them a little space (unless they're suspicious) is going to be more appreciated by the customer than anything What the customer appreciates is not how secret shopper programs are designed (lol). Secret shoppers are supposed to enforce whatever corporate has decided is the ideal experience, with absolutely no flexibility or discretion on the part of the employee. If that guy's corporate policy said "offer to explain the nearby choices to anyone looking at nutritional facts" then he could get in trouble for not doing it. The body language of the customer is irrelevant. The words of the customer are irrelevant. Policy says do it. If it's a secret shopper and you didn't follow policy, you're in trouble.

I try to tip any delivery driver at least $5. I don't really see the cost of the order as relevant. I rarely anything expensive for delivery anyway. If I'm enough of an rear end in a top hat to order a pizza delivery on a holiday then I always tip a full $20.

spite house posted:The real purpose of tipping culture is brilliantly illustrated by how people who don't tip or don't want to are unable to express this sentiment without also sneering theatrically at tipped workers in general. It's strictly a power game and serves to establish and reinforce class distinctions in a society that claims not to have any. Close. Our society doesn't believe that it doesn't have class distinctions, but that they are just class distinctions. If you don't like working for tips then just get a better job at the bible factory

First, you replace all your light bulbs with their store brand Great Value light bulbs, which they will exchange for any reason, plus a box of spares. As your bulbs burn out, exchange the dead ones for the spares. When the box is full of dead bulbs exchange it for new ones. It doesn't cost you anything more than the initial investment. A lifetime of bulbs for the low, low cost of small initial investment and your sense of self-respect as a human being.
