I've gone down the rabbit hole of reactionary 40k youtube where guys with english accents lament the "kidifying" and "soyification" of 40k.

if the accuracy of die rolls means that much, why not just use a digital dice roller app? they're super cheap and probably easier to use for big armies than regular dice

a black polo with 40k iconography is perfect recognition of their audience. Why do warhams love wearing oversized black polos?

Are orks any good? I've never felt the urge to paint them, but of all the 40k armies they're calling to me the most right now

Thinking of picking up a start collecting box to get back into 40k. Anyone have recs/opinions on orks, sisters of battle, or chaos space marines?

I'm not really sure where to start with 40k. I was thinking maybe Kill Team and get a Start Collecting boxed set to start, but I need some advice!

Current armies I'm most interested in: Necrons, Chaos Space Marines, Space Wolves, Sisters of Battle

Kill team is where I started. Really low level of entry. A lot of kill teams can be made with just one box of basic troops, in some cases a start collecting box would be overkill because some units couldn't even be used. It is also a good way to try a fraction before investing. I made like 8 kill teams before settling on one (thousand sons) that I've now invested enough money into to make up to a 1500 point army.

Do you have any tips on collecting Thousand Sons? I'm mostly interested in them as a faction I think, and the start collecting box seems solid and filled with cool minis.

Okay. I think my rules will be simple.

If you want to win the Necron Half of Indomitus mailed to your doorstep, along with some other minor goodies, I will be doing a raffle on Friday, 7th of August. You can have two raffle tickets - Here's how you get them.

Ticket 1: Tell me how you would paint your acquisition. I'm not expecting huge detail, here. I just like to get inspired by hearing about painting!

Ticket 2: Tell me about a really positive experience you had once with a hobby pal. Doesn't have to be long. This could be "We would always get together to play a game and end up drinking too much and watching Terminator 2 for some reason" or "I was really inspired with how great an opponent he was here's how".

In the name of fairness, I'll be putting every forums name into a Wheel Decide and sending the link to JIZZ DENOUEMENT for impartiality! Your submissions are due by 5PM PST, August 7th.

Thanks! I hope to see some cheerful stuff!

Ticket 1: I’m thinking blue and black, with bright orange weapons and energy.

Ticket 2: I remember this guy Steve at the hobby store I used to work at who was just a great guy. I’ve tried to find him on social media but haven’t been able too. He introduced me to painting as an art form rather than a tedious chore. I was always super impressed by his paint jobs on various obscure game models and we would spend hours talking or painting or building things at the store. He and I played our first game of warhammer fantasy roleplay together and I often think back to it as something formative for me, as I was in my maybe late teens/early 20s and this guy would come in who was in his 30s and was a total nerd, but was a genuinely good person who i looked up to.

I'm not looking into the Eldar as a possible army. I like the idea of a bunch of different specialist units that can be painted differently. Any other Eldar players in here with tips on where to start?

I'm looking at Harlequins now as a full army and I think that's where I'm gonna settle! All the models are cool looking, the army isn't too big, and the models are so varied I can have a lot of fun painting them.

If there are any Harlequin players here, does it make sense to start with just a couple Troupe boxes and go from there? Any particular units I should look for/avoid?

After a lot of research and hemming and hawing, I finally decided that the correct army for me is the Orks! I like the randomness they offer, the shootiness, and the idea of having a huge swarm of dudes who kick a ton of rear end.

Just ordered some Boyz, Gretchin, and a box of Nobz to get me started, as well as some contrast paint for making skin easier!

I need inspiration for ork color schemes! I don’t know what to do for them. I was thinking of goffs, but also evil suns sound cool and yellow on orks always seems to look fantastic, but I’d def need advice on painting proper yellows.

Where do you all order your models from in the US? Miniature Market seems to be missing a lot of what I'm looking for, GW is out of stock on most things, and my FLGS doesn't do custom orders.

Low model count, hope you like painting gold.

More hobby-related, but a quick, easy, and imo better way to paint gold than regular gold paint is to paint silver as a basecoat and use a contrast over it. Snakebite Leather and Iyanden Yellow both make great, very different golds. Snakebite leather in particular looks very realistic imo.
